The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (often known by its initialism as RBKC) is an Inner London borough with royal status. It is the smallest borough in London and the second smallest district in England; it is one of the most densely populated administrative regions in the United Kingdom. It includes affluent areas such as Notting Hill, Kensington, South Kensington, Chelsea, and Knightsbridge.
The borough of Kensington and Chelsea, forming part of London’s fashionable West End district, is predominantly residential in character and includes a royal palace and the embassies of several countries. The present borough was established in 1965 by the amalgamation of the borough of Chelsea with the royal metropolitan borough of Kensington, whose royal charter had been granted in 1901. It includes such areas as North Kensington, Notting Hill, Kensington, Knightsbridge (in part), Brompton, Earl’s Court, West Brompton, and Chelsea. The names Chelsea (Celchyth, 789 ce), Kensington (Chenesitun, 1086), and Notting Hill (Knottynghull, 1356) are probably of Anglo-Saxon origin.
The borough is immediately west of the City of Westminster and east of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. It contains major museums and universities in Albertopolis, department stores such as Harrods, Peter Jones and Harvey Nichols, and embassies in Belgravia, Knightsbridge and Kensington Gardens. The borough is home to the Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s largest, and contains many of the most expensive residential properties in the world, as well as Kensington Palace, a British royal residence.
Queensway (formerly Queen’s Road) is a shopping street in Bayswater, an area of west London. It is home to Whiteleys, many restaurants, cafés, pubs, souvenir shops and a few high-street retail chains. Queensway and Westbourne Grove are identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London.
Bayswater is an area in the City of Westminster in West London. It is a built-up district with a population density of 17,500 per square kilometre, and is located between Kensington Gardens to the south, Paddington to the north-east, and Notting Hill to the west.
Much of Bayswater was built in the 1800s, and consists of streets and garden squares lined with Victorian stucco terraces; some of which have been subdivided into flats. Other key developments include the Grade II listed 650-flat Hallfield Estate, designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, and Queensway and Westbourne Grove, its busiest high streets, with a mix of independent, boutique and chain retailers and restaurants.
Bayswater is also one of London’s most cosmopolitan areas: a diverse local population is augmented by a high concentration of hotels. In addition to the English, there are many other nationalities. Notable ethnic groups include Greeks, French, Americans, Irish, Italians, Brazilians, and Arabs, amongst others.
The name Bayswater is derived from the 1380 placename “Bayards Watering Place”, which in Middle English meant either a watering place for horses, or the watering place that belonged to the Bayard family.
Historically, Bayswater was located to the west of London on the road from Tyburn towards Uxbridge. It was a hamlet in the seventeenth century close to the Kensington Gravel Pits. By the end of the eighteenth century Bayswater remained a small settlement, although the gradual expansion of London westward into Mayfair and Paddington brought it closer to the outskirts of the city.
