Hersonissos Crete Easter Saturday 2025

Tonight we are in the beautiful village of Hersonissos situated 25 minutes from Heraklion Greek Easter Saturday is a night of deep spiritual meaning and vibrant celebration marking the Resurection of Christ As midnight nears churches across Greece fill with worshippers holding candles awaiting the joyous moment when the priest proclaims “Christos Anesti” which means “Christ Has Risen” followed by bells ringing and fireworks lighting up the sky. In some villages a symbolic figure representing Judas is burned, often a scarecrow like effigy, meant to represent the betrayal of Christ and the triumph of good over evil. After the midnight service families gather to share Magiritsa a traditional and delicious Easter soup made with Lamb Ofal, breaking their fast with friends and family. The night flows into joyful preparation for the Easter Sunday feast where whole Lambs are slow roasted on a spit, over open coal filling the air with rich aromas and setting the stage for a day of celebration, music and togetherness.
