Thank you 🙂 The origins of Alberobello trace back to the early 16th century when Count Andrea Matteo III Acquaviva d’Aragona permitted 40 peasant families to settle and cultivate the land, requiring them to pay a tenth of their produce as tax. His successor, Count Giangirolamo II, initiated urban development by constructing an inn, tavern, and oratory, and encouraged building homes using dry stone techniques without mortar. This method allowed for easy dismantling of structures to evade taxes imposed by the Spanish viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples. This practice led to the proliferation of trulli, which became the town’s hallmark. Alberobello remained under feudal control until 27 May 1797, when King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon elevated it to a royal city, freeing it from feudal obligations. Trulli (singular: trullo) are traditional dry stone huts characterized by their conical roofs. Constructed without mortar, these structures utilize local limestone and feature thick walls that provide insulation against both heat and cold. Originally serving as temporary field shelters or storehouses, trulli evolved into permanent dwellings for small-scale landowners and agricultural laborers. The interiors of trulli were initially simple, comprising a single room with a fireplace and alcove. Over time, as social and economic conditions improved, trulli became more comfortable residences, often expanded to include multiple rooms. In 1996, Alberobello’s trulli were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for their unique construction and historical significance. This acknowledgment underscores the town’s exceptional representation of a building tradition that has survived over centuries. Rione Monti
This district boasts around 1,000 trulli, tightly clustered along narrow lanes. Visitors can explore trulli that have been converted into shops, bars, restaurants, and even a trullo church—Chiesa di Sant’Antonio. Rione Aia Piccola In contrast to the commercial Rione Monti, Aia Piccola offers a more authentic experience with its residential trulli, providing insight into traditional living. Trullo Sovrano The largest trullo in Alberobello, Trullo Sovrano is a two-story structure that now serves as a museum, showcasing period furnishings and offering a glimpse into historical trullo life. Casa d’Amore This historic building symbolizes the end of feudalism in Alberobello. Constructed in 1797, it was the first house built using mortar, marking a departure from the dry stone technique. Bosco Selva
Located in the southern part of Alberobello, Bosco Selva is a natural oasis and city park that serves as the town’s green lung. Alberobello offers a rich culinary scene, featuring traditional Apulian dishes. Local specialties include orecchiette pasta, burrata cheese, and various seafood dishes. Many restaurants are housed within trulli, providing a unique dining ambiance. Visitors can purchase handcrafted souvenirs such as ceramic trulli replicas, lacework, and local olive oil. The trulli-lined streets of Rione Monti are particularly popular for shopping. For an immersive experience, consider staying in a trullo converted into a hotel or guesthouse. Options range from rustic to luxurious, offering modern amenities while preserving traditional charm. Alberobello hosts various events throughout the year, including religious festivals, cultural celebrations, and food fairs. These events provide an opportunity to experience local traditions and community spirit. Alberobello is accessible by train and bus from major cities like Bari. The town is also a popular stop on regional tours exploring the Itria Valley and other Apulian attractions. Alberobello’s unique architecture, rich history, and vibrant culture make it a must-visit destination in southern Italy. Whether wandering through its trulli-lined streets, savoring local cuisine, or immersing yourself in its traditions, Alberobello offers an unforgettable experience. Thanks for Watching 🙂
