We Had Just About Enough Time to Realise LE HAVRE is a City Like Few Others…
[Music] Oh, they’re washing the ship. [Music] [Applause] I think this is where we’re meant to exit from. And we’ve come down some kind of service gang way. Oh well. Where we belong. It just feels so weird that we’ve come to a different country, but I don’t have my passport. The temptation was there just to stay on the ship this morning as we only got on last night. But we’ve docked in Lahar, so why not come and have a look at Lahar? We’ve got about 3 hours and then we’ll need to jump back on that bus to the ship. It just feels so funny. I know I’ve said it already, but we’re in France and I haven’t shown my passport. weird. We saw this church tower off in the distance. So, we’ve come for a closer look because it’s very different and very beautiful. I love the architecture, don’t you? Oh, it’s a bit brutalist. Wonder if we go for a look inside. That is stunning. That is one of the most ridiculously beautiful buildings I’ve ever seen. Look at it going right up into the tower. It’s all just big blocks of concrete, which normally you would say that’s really boring, but the straight lines and the way the light is just shining in through the windows. It’s perfection. Tried to take some photos from different angles, but it’s just not doing it justice. That is definitely the most interesting and the coolest church I’ve seen in my life. And I’ve seen lots of churches. See, it’s not just me that likes the concrete. Do you know what I’ve just noticed? That’s a spiral staircase right at the top. So that was St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church. And whoever designed that place, they knew what they were doing. I would go as far as to say if we see nothing else in La Harve today, that was worth getting off the ship for. Do we know what these are? It might sounds weird, but there is a volcano in the middle of the city. Don’t worry, it’s not dangerous. It’s a cultural center located in the center of the city. So, it’s open in 1982. The volcano. It feels like this is a place we need to come back to at some point. It’s so interesting. And we could double it up with the Normandy beaches, the D-Day landings, all that stuff. I always thought in my home city, Kat Vita, we have the event hall. And I thought that was quite funky and weird, but then you see this. Yeah, this is a different level. I don’t know. I like it. I love all the shapes and all that concrete. It’s a choice. The French are awfully good at their grand monuments. Ah, what a beautiful place. The sun certainly helps. I found something I have to show you. Yeah. 6 minutes walk. There we go again. I’m hoping she’s found an ice cream shop. Okay, I can see it. I don’t mean construction. [Music] He’s cool. Look at the way he’s standing. Hands in pockets. What do you think, folks? Yeah, I’m not interested in these beautiful old buildings. It’s all about the seagulls. Now, when I see an old church, it’s just not the same. I like this place. And a way off in the distance, I can see the back of our ship just about architecturally. This place is so interesting. Look over there. The Queen Mary’s in [Applause] I haven’t even noticed these are all old shipping containers. This place is awesome. You’re on Espanad Nelson Mandela. [Applause] And as we look back over towards our ship, there’s one of the things that I think such a shame on the back. It doesn’t say Queen Mary to Southampton anymore. It says Queen Mary to Hamilton. And I don’t mean Hamilton in Scotland. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I want to jump in there. I must be dehydrated. See, they have construction even in France. It’s not because we’re in France. It’s because I’m here. We were just talking about how this will be Elitzia’s first time in the United States and we just realized it’s your first time in France. Yeah, it’s true. Well, we think it is. Unless you can tell us any different. Have we been in France before? French coffee shop. How about this one? Yeah. Nothing says France more than the French coffee shop. Let’s go in there. Or do you want to sit outside? Can you say anything? I can say Francori. What’s that? Don’t know. It’s from a commercial in the 80s. I like our table. Okay. Would you look at that? Not bad. And I’ve gone for the pistachio. I have a nice tart. [Music] Well, now you found us the beach. Would you like an ice cream first or you want to go and see the monument first? What I want to see is the seagulls. Look at them. No, no, no. I want a mint swashy. Oh, look that one. I absolutely dare you try it. It’s disgusting. It’s like toothpaste mixed with sugar. Perfect description. This place is strange, but I like it. We’ll come down to see the sea when it’s all we’re going to see for the next seven nights. But I like the beach. Old St. Joseph’s. It’s quite imposing on that skyline. [Music] [Music] [Music] Okay. [Music] Documents check. [Music] [Music] We’re back. [Music] They’re lighting us back on. That’s a surprise. Look at those fenders. Thank you. This way. [Music] Thank you.
And we weren’t even going to get off the ship! We’re glad we did…
Welcome to our ONLY port call between Southampton and New York City – and there’s only one Le Havre! This isn’t a full video, just some snapshots of our 3 hours in France. Still hope you enjoy it though. Should I come back and make a full video? You decide!

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me 🙂
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING 🙂

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 10am)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is the reality of a weekly upload schedule, coupled with doing everything myself and sticking to a budget. Often I need to film 3-4 videos in one trip to make it cost-effective and that means a queue for the Saturday morning slot. This is just part of YouTube life I’m afraid, but I will only upload something if it still has value for you as a viewer. Please also remember I’m a regular guy with all the responsibilities of life and this can sometimes mean I need to keep emergency videos for times when that life gets in the way!
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON’T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I’m afraid – time and money! Hotel prices especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE’S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a 9-5 job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I’ve only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It’s my income, I can’t do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you’d like to support further, I’ll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don’t like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don’t even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I’m open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don’t want to get into talking about products, it’s something I don’t like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for YouTube Premium). So it’s probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

What a stunning place, thanks guys !
You reminded of the 80s commercial lol
😂😂😂😂😂
It was brave of you to leave the ship without your passports, imagine being stopped by the Gendarmerie
Loved the bonus content, definitely worth a full video. Loved the look of St. Josephs' church too !
During WW2 a large part of Le Havre was destroyed by British bombers. After the war when the town was rebuilt, most of the new buildings were designed by the same architect
The spiral staircase! How cool! 😃 Good video – again 👍
Thanks Steve – well worth the trip to make this short & sweet video.
As you liked that church I think you’d love Coventry Cathedral which has some elements of the old bombed structure plus the modern concrete replacement. Could make a great video combined with one of its partner churches in Germany -links made after WW2.
Great video. Definitely worth going back there for another video.
Wonderfully informative, intelligent and sometimes funny commentary. Thanks. I am prone to exaggeration, but I did enjoy the video.
Nice Video Again:) & Waitting To New York 🙂
Always enjoy the videos, keep them coming! Quick question, if Alicija has not been to the USA before this trip, why does she sometimes wear an Ohio State hat? Nothing more than curious, she looks great in any hat I'm sure!
Hopefully your time in New York went well. It's such a crazy city…I know because I work there (but commute in from the 'burbs!)
Great little video Steve and Alicja, definitely worth a visit
Well Steve and Alicja I’ve just added St Joseph’s to my must see list…wow! And yes please go back to Le Havre. The Normandy beaches would also be a good history tour.
3 hours and 15,000 steps very well spent. I loved the town.
Thanks Steve & Alicia for your wonderful travels abroad your videos have been joyful to watch 🙏🇦🇺🫶🏽🦘💜
Brutalism with stained glass really shouldn't work, but wow that church is stunning….
Definitely peaked my interest in Le Havre.
Afternoon sir hello from Texas I recently found your channel and really enjoy your concert. Appreciate the effort. God bless.
I've been there a couple of times, but not really had a look around, more so flying visits. There is a very famous seaside town near by you'd need to add to your list. My Irish cousin lives in Le Havre where they teach English.
I'm weird. I actually like the construction because I think it makes these videos feel more real compared to more polished travel videos out there.
Great video once again. I didn't realise (until prompted by your reference to the country of registration for Cunard ships) that it had been changed from Southampton to Hamilton in Bermuda to allow wedding ceremonies to still be conducted at sea.
I don't want another video of Le Havre, I demand it!!! 😄
And it seems that there are lots of things to see there in Normandy.
Great video as always.👏
Le Harve definitely worth a video.
I lived there for a year, Rouen for four and six months in Dieppe.
Le Havre got completely flattened.Seen it rebuild since 1959. Got attacked physically at work in Rouen over this. Brits did not go down well. 1977.
Le Havre is a UNESCO world heritage town. It was completely destroyed during WWII and rebuilt under the plans of one architect only.
Thoroughly enjoyed le havre. Beautiful..especially that church and its architecture..def worth returning you 2 maybe when construction is completed…🏴🥂😎
I slid under a bus outside the second church on my moped in the rain and just got my leg out before the back wheel. In the street next was the Kursaal cinema. Saturdays thousands of Mopeds. Two films 5FFR. Not even a Euro.1973.
Worked loading trucks by walkie talkie on to the ferries. Then as a water clerk doing the liaison between ships and the agency.A wonderful varied job.
Fab video as always, Le Harve looks like a lovely place to visit and what a cathedral and so well filmed.
I liked that spiral building. It looked like it was leaning to one side in your last shot of it.
I never thought Le Havre would be so interesting, and it's just over the water.
I always thought it was more industrial and home of one of the better football academies in France. A lot of France's best young players came through at Le Havre FC.
The city was redesigned by Auguste Perret post WW2 – the place was turned to rubble and slums. I lived in Amiens that has a tiny bit of the city also rebuilt by the same architect (and one of Europe’s earliest skyscrapers). Check it out, Ryanair to BVA and then a coach ride 😉
Toothpaste mixed with sugar… Great line
Is this Steve Marsh as in big cook little cook or does he just share the same name??
So it seems Construction is an International thing?🙂Thanks for the Extra😎😊
Very nice! Glad you posted it.
What a cool place, definitely now on my radar. Definitely worth a return trip second video.
Spectacular architecture 😊😊
Steve – as an elderly well travelled gent, my one strong recommendation would be, when abroad, always, always carry your passport ! (plus credit cards and tickets) you never know whats going to happen.
Nice walk about!~
Im 100 per cent with Alicja.A mint slushie is positively…disgusting.
Had no idea Le Havre was such a nice place, the church was incredible
why was there a microwave on the bus haha
I couldn't quite make out the last couple of words of the ad slogan you were quoting but it sounded a lot like 'Les Francais adorent les pieds d'or.' This would translate to 'The French love golden feet.' Something tells me that either I've misheard you or you've misremembered it.
Sounds like Grand designs ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love everything about this video ❤❤❤❤
Awww, that was great Stevieeeee👏
A nice little tour of La Havre made better by the Delightful Alicja🤗
