Lipari. Aeolian Islands, Italy

The Aeolian islands are a small archipelago of 7 volcanic inhabited islands situated off the northern coast of Sicily, reachable by boat from Milazzo or Messina and less frequently from mainland towns like Reggio Calabria or Tropea.

Lipari is the biggest island and the most urbanized. There are however many parts that retain its natural beauty. We arrived and stayed there only for the Easter day; the town was filled with young drummers and dancers parading the narrow streets. In the afternoon we left our cozy and full of character Tritone hotel for a short hike to the Osservatorio Geofisico de Lipari. On our way, on a secondary road, we saw a large number of boats stationed on land; the most we have ever seen (Fitzcarraldo vibes 🙂

The promontory on which the observatory sits offers views to the neighboring island of Vulcano, but also further to Salina and even Stromboli to the west, stunning when it’s innundated in the sunset light.

We finally returned to the town after dusk via the main road having in front of us a beautiful panorama filled with the bright lights of the town.

Hiked and filmed on 20 April 2025.
