Walking Silver Falls State Park Trail

Returning to the states in April, I had the opportunity to visit Silver Falls State Park. The park, 35 miles East of Salem, is a gem, well know to Oregonians, but sadly missed by most visitors to the state.

Three of us walked the short loop, a pleasant 2-mile trail that offered rewarding glimpses into the park’s natural beauty. Along the way, we saw two impressive waterfalls – South Falls and Lower South Falls, their flow energized by spring runoff.

Although the longer 8-mile loop boasts up to 10 falls, the shorter route was perfect for a relaxed outing. Visiting in April, the early signs of spring were beginning to emerge—delicate buds unfurling on alder and maple branches, carpets of moss brightening, and the occasional trillium poking through the underbrush. We spotted a few squirrels darting through the trees, adding a bit of life to the still-quiet forest.

To get to Silver Falls State Park, take State Highway 20 East from Salem, the exit onto Highway 214 and head NE following the signs to the park.
