Carcassonne két részre oszlik, a várfallal megerősített történelmi városrészre, a Cité de Carcassonne-ra és a nagyobb, nyüzsgő alsóvárosra. A 12. századi kastély és a Narbonne-kapu ikertornyai gyönyörűek és azonnal felismerhetőek. A Comtal vár a város uralkodóinak rezidenciájaként szolgált. A várost számos film forgatási helyszíneként is használták, itt filmezték a “Robin Hood: Tolvajok fejedelme” című filmet is. 1853-ban megkezdődött a város helyreállítása, ezért lehet ma a három kilométernyi sánccal rendelkező középkori város Európa legnagyobb és legjobb állapotban fennmaradt középkori erődítménye.
Az alsóvárosban is rengeteg a látnivaló, vannak magánkúriák, templomok és kápolnák, itt van a vásárcsarnok és a Place Carnot, ahol hetente háromszor tartanak piacot. Itt található a Canal du Midi vagyis a Midi Csatorna, ami Carcassonne városának szívén halad keresztül.

Carcassonne is divided into two parts, the walled historic city, the Cité de Carcassonne, and the larger, bustling lower town. The 12th-century castle and the twin towers of the Narbonne Gate are beautiful and instantly recognizable. The Comtal Castle served as the residence of the city’s rulers. The city has also been used as a filming location for several films, including “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.” Restoration began in 1853, and today the medieval city, with its three kilometres of ramparts, is the largest and best-preserved medieval fortress in Europe.
The lower town also has plenty to see, with private mansions, churches and chapels, the market hall and Place Carnot, where markets are held three times a week. The Canal du Midi, or Midi Canal, runs through the heart of Carcassonne.
