CROSSING the ALPS in our Self-Build Van | Vanlife Europe: UK to Greece… Ep.2

okay so a bit of a change of plan [Music] So we got up early this morning and we drove over from Munich to Amissi Lake where we’ve set up the van for the day So we’re going to just chill out here The last couple of days we were out and about in Munich with Martin He very kindly showed us around Yeah And entertained us for the last couple of days So that was really fun We had lots of good beer lots of good food Good food Yeah The Bavarian food’s very good And what else did we do Uh just a lot of walking a lot of sightseeing Martin was like the tour although he would look at something and then Google what it was and then tell us Yeah Fun Went into the church Saw the wave thing Yeah So we went to um the wave in the English garden in Munich Sadly a woman had died there a couple of weeks ago so it was all fenced off I guess that they’re doing their investigations of what went wrong Um and then figuring out what safety precautions they can put in place for future So yeah that was really sad The river was super high as well There had been a lot of rain the last couple of days So I think it was 20 mm yesterday 20 mil of rain Yes it’s a lot of rain So we’re going to head back to the van now and get some lunch And the plan for later is to head to Fusen Fusen Be careful on here [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] Yeah we’ve left the lake now and we’re on our way to Fusen We’re going to go to a shop get some fuel stock up on some bits Thinking of stay in there for a couple of nights so we can sort of have a little bit of a base Um and then we’re going to go off to Austria after that Chef Ben what are you making I am making a mess Great I’m making tomatoes Get smaller Some sort of chicken with churitzo I’ve got some couscous ready to go here And then we’re going to chuck in those vegetables Oh look There’s a lake there How have you just noticed that It’s huge We just drove all the way down there I didn’t see that H It is very rainy Wish it would stop It’s a beautiful place But I think it’s time we found a pub Are you just go down The wet bird doesn’t mount the gas strut because of engine failure fusing All right Google pub I’m cold So we’re still in Thus at the moment We’ve been staying here the last couple of nights Just packing up the van making sure it’s ready to hit the road and then we’ll be off 1,000 So the website said it’s a gentle 20 minute walk to the bridge through the forest It’s not gentle Nothing gentle about this Wait a minute Oh That was a punch Doesn’t even look that bad You are here Okay Halfway Halfway We consider ourselves reasonably fit but this is nothing How often do you stable now Not very often It’s quite flat where we live Going for a run’s fine but this is just not the same [Applause] up that one Take it So yeah two of those So I’m probably going to have to do one and then another one And then can you click it again There we go Two corrector A wrong one Ah was it Yeah I think so Oh go there Okay we got there [Music] [Music] Look at that nut Massive nut on it So we’re parked up that way We walked through the forest there up there and then walked across the bridge to get to the other side And now we’ve got to go back [Music] in We walked across the high line and pretty sketchy Yeah it was good though Really good Worth doing Good views Yeah even though it’s quite cloudy you can still see a lot And it was uh Yeah a good experience So definitely recommend that Yeah worth doing if you’re here Yeah So now we’re going to head back to the van and then we haven’t actually figured out where we’re going to stay tonight but we while we were walking down we we discussed that we probably want to be about 2 hours south So we’re going to drive in a general direction and just see where we can find on the way down We do have a map that has like loads of places loads of potential options on them Um we just need to pick one So yeah just make a move and then when we get see how far we get and then when we get there we’ll find one Yeah So van is just ahead down there There she [Music] is N Oh [Music] We’re here Wherever this is this is the spot for the night We think we’re just going to check that sign just to make sure there’s no reason why we can’t stay here Oh god I think Okay So a bit of a change of plan We pulled up there and then a guy came over to Ben who was feeding his crops Yeah and said that the mountain police might come and knock on the van in the night and tell us to move on but then offered us a spot to go and park on his winery or or his land Just on his land He’s he’s 74 years old um and is just out here feeding his crops and he said he used to travel around um in a van so he knows how it feels to sometimes be not able to find where you need to be Um so at first I thought that’s a bit strange that you’re offering to have us there and then he gave me a business card and he said anytime you want just give me a call So yeah we thought it’s only 2 km down the road He said I’ll show you where you can park come and come and go as much as you want Stay for as long as you want Leave as soon as you want So I thought we’ll might as well go go down somewhere that we feel is definitely okay for the night And yeah if not we’ll move on What a nice guy Yeah he’s just brought us to his vineyard I mean look at this And he has all these acres of land So he’s he’s 76 years old and he’s traveled the world He was telling us about a road trip he did from was it um Alaska Alaska to Argentina Crazy six month road trip he said Um and yeah he knows what it’s like to travel the world in a van So yeah he said if you can help someone out you help someone out Um yeah really nice guy So he said we can stay here as long as we like although we probably will only stay here the one night but it’s very We need to keep moving Yeah Yeah we need to keep moving We need to get down to Italy He also noticed that we’ve got a bulb out which was really helpful that he pointed that out because he said in Italy we might get a fine for that So we’re going to get that fixed We do We have a spare bulb so we can do it But he also called his friend who’s a mechanic and said his friend will come and do it for free So yeah that’s super nice Too nice Yeah Too nice We were we were really hesitant because we’re so used to we’re always like “Oh what I don’t know You just motive.” Yeah someone’s got an ulterior motive and you’re not sure why they’re being so nice I suppose there are good people and bad people everywhere But I think we’re just always really super cautious of things like that So it was a really good chance meeting to come across this guy and for him to offer for us to stay on his piece of land just outside the front of his He even said he even said “What time do you wake up in the morning?” And we said 7 or 8 you know and then he said “Okay well at 7:00 you’ll hear my car I’m taking my kid to school.” or his his granddaughter wasn’t it Yeah And yeah he he also like rang the rang the family and got them all to come down and say hello Yeah it was really sweet So yeah everyone everyone was super nice Yeah Um Yeah it’s still really gray here And I think there is more rain due tomorrow but we will check in and see what it’s like tomorrow Yeah [Music] Just having a little wander around It’s all the goats here with the bells on just over here and over here So aside from uh getting really lucky with Degan letting us stay on his vineyard we also had the broken light which Degan called one of his friends to come help us fix Super helpful of him So yeah really grateful for that We discovered another issue yesterday whilst I was cleaning up after cooking I noticed some water on the floor and uh turns out one of the uh pipes has been leaking slightly We have the Bobble uh hot water system from Bobble Vans which uses the diesel heater to heat the water We’ve only used it I think twice so far this week Um and when we fitted the system we replaced most of the clips that were supplied with uh proper Jubilee clips But this particular pipe we hadn’t replaced these two clips And now we’re regretting that because yeah there was a slight leak coming from that pipe So after when we leave here today we’re going to go to the um hardware store and then pick up a couple of Jubilee clips and replace those And then hopefully that will then replace that will then hopefully that will then fix the leak Yeah Just got distracted by these goats here They look so sweet Oh just chilling Oh hey oh hey oh hey oh hey oh hey oh hey oh hey oh hey oh hey oh [Music] hey What you got I got some flowers Where did you get that from Degan gave them to me Oh did he He did He’s such a nice man Yeah So did you see him Where was he He just drove past I was saying hello to the goats Oh cool Yeah Okay Jubilee clips have been acquired Time thing Oh Um yes we’ve got Jubilee Eclipse now which means we can fix the off Hopefully now Anyway to here about an hour away Okay Let’s go Okay let’s go

In this episode of our UK to Greece vanlife adventure, we hit the road from Munich and head deeper into the Alps, chasing wind, scenery and the freedom of full-time travel.

We start with a lakeside pause at Ammersee Lake, then brave the rain as we explore Füssen — a fairytale Bavarian town at the foot of the mountains. From there, we cross into Austria, where things take an unexpected turn…

After a dramatic walk across the Highline179 suspension bridge, we’re searching for a park-up spot near Tarrenz, but get warned by a local that the mountain police might move us on. Then, in true vanlife magic, he invites us to stay on his vineyard — proof that the best moments are often the ones you don’t plan.

We wrap up the episode by driving into northern Italy, with the Dolomites in view and the road to Greece still ahead of us.

This series follows our full-time vanlife journey from the UK to Greece, with a focus on travel, windsurfing, and authentic moments from our journey.
