She placed straw dummies in the towers to make the army look larger. She also threw a well-fed pig over the walls to fake food abundance. The enemy withdrew. The bells rang: “Carcas sonne!” — giving the city its name. Today, a statue of Lady Carcas stands above the Porte Narbonnaise. Carcassonne Medieval Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Carcassonne Medieval Town is a stunning fortified city in southern France. Built in the 3rd century as a Roman fort, it evolved over centuries. The medieval fortifications were constructed between the 12th and 14th centuries. In 1853, architect Viollet-le-Duc led a major restoration of the citadel. Today, the site is open year-round to visitors from around the world. The walled city covers about 3 kilometers of double walls and 52 towers. Its architecture blends Romanesque and Gothic styles. Unique features include its double defensive walls and medieval watchtowers. Don’t miss Porte Narbonnaise, the main entrance flanked by twin towers. Located in the Occitanie region, Carcassonne sits atop a hill by the River Aude. Nearby attractions include the Canal du Midi and the Bastide Saint-Louis.
