from the world are you ready to have your mind blown this is the ultimate austrian adventure and it’s going to be absolutely legendary ready to discover austria’s bestkept secrets let’s dive in all right for our first stop i brought you guys to what is literally the most beautiful village i’ve ever seen in my entire life this is hallstat look at this place it’s like we’ve stepped into a real life fairy tale you have these incredible 16th century alpine houses built right into the side of a mountain overlooking a crystalclear lake it’s so perfect it almost looks fake like a movie set the locals have been living here for thousands of years literally they’ve been mining salt here since the iron age it’s insane to think about the history that’s soaked into every single street and building here we’re not just looking at it from a distance though we’re going deep i’ve rented a traditional wooden boat and we’re going to get a view from the water that most people miss from out here on the lake you can see how the entire village just clings to the mountain side the reflection of the church steeple and the colorful houses in the water is absolutely mind-blowing it’s one of those views that you see in pictures and think there’s no way it actually looks that good i can tell you right now the pictures do not do it justice this is a thousand times better in person and if you think the view from the water is good wait until you see the view from above there’s a ficular that takes you straight up the mountain to the hallstat skywalk it’s a viewing platform that hangs 350 m directly over the town standing up here you can see the entire lake the village and the massive docstein alps surrounding it all it’s an unbelievable panorama holstat isn’t just a hidden gem it’s the crown jewel of the austrian alps and we’re just getting started on this adventure okay if you thought halstat was cool our next stop is literally freezing we’ve come to werin to explore isenvelt which translates to world of the ice giants and let me tell you it lives up to the name this isn’t just some small cave with a bit of ice this is the largest ice cave on planet earth the entrance alone is massive like a gateway to another world to even get here we had to take austria’s steepest cable car which was an adventure in itself climbing up the side of this gigantic mountain the air gets colder the closer you get and you can feel the raw power of nature here now we’re heading inside they give you these old school carbide lamps because there’s no electricity in the cave it’s just us the guide and the flickering light of our lanterns against endless ice it’s completely dark except for what our lamps show us which makes it even more intense we had to climb 1,400 steps both up and down inside this frozen labyrinth you’re surrounded by these colossal ice formations there are frozen waterfalls towering ice palaces and sculptures so intricate you can’t believe they were formed naturally it feels like you’re exploring a different planet the sheer scale of this place is impossible to capture on camera the main chamber the ice palace is so huge it could fit a cathedral inside it and the walls are just shimmering blue ice the temperature in here stays below freezing all year round even in the middle of summer it’s a completely surreal experience walking through these frozen halls that have been forming for thousands of years this isn’t just a tourist attraction it’s a full-blown expedition into the heart of a frozen mountain this is easily one of the most insane things i’ve ever done after the intense cold of the ice cave i wanted to warm things up a bit so welcome to the watchtowow valley this entire 24- mile stretch of the danube river is a unesco world heritage site and you can see why it’s absolutely stunning we’re talking rolling hills covered in vineyards ancient castles and monasteries perched on cliffs and charming little villages dotted along the riverbank the most famous castle here is dernstein where richard the lionhe heart was supposedly imprisoned it’s just ruins now but it looks epic sitting high above the town you could drive through this valley but that’s not how we do things i’ve chartered a private river boat to give us the ultimate experience cruising down the danube you get a perspective you just can’t get from the road the sun is out we’re surrounded by history and incredible scenery and it’s just so peaceful the vineyards that cover these hillsides are famous for producing some of austria’s best white wines like rezling and gruner velt liner the stone terraces they’re built on are hundreds of years old and have been meticulously maintained by generations of wine makers every bend in the river reveals something new another fairy tale village another ancient ruin or another impossibly steep vineyard we’re passing through towns like spits and vison kerkin which look like they haven’t changed in centuries it’s a living breathing landscape that’s both incredibly beautiful and rich with history floating down this legendary river surrounded by castles and vineyards feels like traveling back in time this is the relaxing part of our austrian adventure but trust me the intensity is about to ramp up again all right the relaxing part of the trip is officially over we’ve driven to the edge of hoa tower national park to witness something truly epic the criml waterfalls these aren’t just any waterfalls they are the tallest waterfalls in all of austria and one of the highest in europe we’re talking about a total drop of 380 meters that’s over 1,200 ft the sheer power and noise of the water is absolutely deafening you can feel the spray on your face from hundreds of feet away this is nature at its most raw and most powerful and it is absolutely awe inspiring getting here is an adventure there’s a hiking trail that winds its way right up alongside the falls it’s a steep climb but it’s so worth it because there are multiple viewing platforms along the way each one gives you a different more insane perspective of the cascades you start at the bottom feeling the full force of the final drop and as you climb higher you get right next to the thundering upper stages of the waterfall the path is surrounded by this lush green forest that’s constantly soaked in mist from the falls making everything feel super vibrant and alive we’ve made it to the very top platform from up here you’re looking down as the water begins its massive plunge the view of the water crashing down and the valley stretching out below is just unbelievable it’s a serious workout to get up here but standing this close to such a massive force of nature is an experience that is hard to describe you feel so small in the best way possible the criml waterfalls are an absolute monster a mustsee for anyone who wants to see the wild untamed side of austria for our final hidden gem we are going to the top of the world this is the gross glockner high alpine road and it is without a doubt the most epic road i have ever driven on this isn’t just a way to get from point a to b the road itself is the destination it’s a masterpiece of engineering with 36 hairpin bends that snake their way up to an altitude of over 2,500 m or more than 8,200 ft we’re literally driving above the clouds the views at every single turn are just breathtaking you’re surrounded by glaciers snowcapped peaks and vast alpine meadows i couldn’t just drive this road in any old car to do it right i rented this incredible sports car to really experience every curve and climb pushing the car through these turns with panoramic views of austria’s highest mountains all around you is an adrenaline rush like no other the road takes you into the heart of the hoa tavern national park right to the base of the gross glockner which is austria’s tallest mountain there are pulloffs and viewpoints all along the way and you have to stop at every single one because the landscape just keeps getting more and more dramatic we’ve reached the main viewpoint the kaiser fran ysef’s hoa from here you get a direct unobstructed view of the gross glockner and the pastura the longest glacier in the eastern alps it’s a jaw-dropping sight you can even spot little marmets running around on the rocks driving this road is like taking a scenic tour of the heavens it’s the perfect most epic finale to our austrian adventure combining insane thrills with the most spectacular mountain scenery you will ever see this road isn’t just a hidden gem it’s the pinnacle of alpine experiences and that is a wrap on our insane tour of austria’s five most incredible hidden gems from the fairy tale village of halstat and the world’s
