「知られざるフランスの名城コンピエーニュとジャンヌ・ダルクの運命」
[Music] Hello, Keisuke here! Today I’m heading to a town called Compiègne. It’s late January in France, and the color of the asphalt on the ring road and the sky in front of me are bleak. The suburban trains running on parallel tracks gradually get smaller. It’s about an hour’s drive to Compiègne, located 85km north-northeast of Paris. We passed Charles de Gaulle Airport on our right and reached the first toll booth. Clouds still cover the sky in the distance. This green FLIXBUS is a low-cost long-distance bus that operates in over 40 countries around the world. I haven’t used it yet, but it seems to be equipped with Wi-Fi, USB charging ports, and toilets. We’re almost at Compiègne. We’re going to continue on with a neighborhood lined with large houses on our left. It seems we’ve arrived. We parked the car and just got out. We’re in a place called Compiègne. Let’s go that way for now! The temperature is about 11° right now. I found the church! I’m going to take a look around for a bit. It’s a pretty old-looking building. The entrance is up ahead. It’s really windy today. It seems you can enter from here. And here’s the entrance. Wow! It’s so windy! Saint-Jacques Church is a historically and architecturally important Gothic Catholic church located in the center of the city. The church was named Saint-Jacques because it is located on the pilgrimage route from Brussels to Santiago de Compostela via Paris. The church was built between 1235 and 1270, and the chancel, transept, and nave were completed with early Gothic features. Later, in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, the bell tower, side aisle chapels, and ambulatory were added in the Flamboyant Gothic style. The bell tower in particular is a protruding structure with intricate decoration, making it the symbol of the church. The interior of the church was renovated in the 18th century, influenced by the Rococo style. The sanctuary is especially made of red, grey and black marble, and the columns are decorated with gold leaf wood. The scallop motif, a symbol of Saint James, is also used throughout the church. The organ, which is made up of about 2,000 pipes, was made in 1768 and has three manuals and one foot pedal, giving a total of 34 tones. Inside, there are stained glass windows depicting the story of Jeanne d’Arc, who is said to have prayed here before her capture in 1430. Other stained glass windows in the church depict scenes related to King Louis IX, who led the Crusades, and holy relics. In 1998, Saint-Jacque Church was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as “Part of the Santiago de Compostela Pilgrimage Route in France”. It is still an active church and a place of worship for local Catholics, and attracts many tourists as a historical building. I came outside the church. It’s warmer outside! There is a castle called Compiègne here, and I’m heading there now. The place you can see in front of you is apparently the castle of Compiègne. This is it! The square in front of this building looks like this. The sky is blue here, but it’s quite cloudy over there. The temperature isn’t that low though. It’s pretty cold. The entrance is here. You can buy your ticket here. After paying the 10 euro entrance fee, you can go inside. The audio guide looks like this. Compiègne Castle was a royal residence and imperial villa used by Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Napoleon I and III. The castle was a hunting base surrounded by forest, and also a place for political receptions. I didn’t expect it to get so cold today . I didn’t expect it to get so cold today. I went further in. As you can see, the corridor, influenced by Greek and Roman classical architecture, is lined with simple columns, and the floor decoration is made of black and white checkered marble, giving it visual depth. This is the entrance. It seems that the tour route starts from these stairs. Let’s go up here. Let’s go! Now let’s take a look at the inside of the castle! This is the magnificent Hall of Martial Arts, 45 meters long, 13 meters wide, and 10 meters high, built in 1809 by order of Napoleon I. It is lined with 20 decorative stucco columns, has luxurious chandeliers, and is decorated with gold decorations, marble, and parquet floors. The ceiling is painted with 12 allegorical paintings symbolizing the great battles of the empire. Originally designed as a space for martial arts, it was also used as a venue for official dinners by Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie during the Second Empire. From 1914 to 1917, it was actually used as a military hospital. This is the chapel, rebuilt during the reign of Louis XVI. The castle was used as a villa for hunting, summer vacation, and government affairs, so a chapel was built so that religious ceremonies could be held during the visit. Most of the tapestries in the castle were made by the prestigious Gobelins in Paris. We returned to the very beginning. I have a little more time, so I’d like to walk around the town. I’d like to see a little more of the town. I wonder what it’s like inside. But I don’t have a specific destination in mind, so… Here I am… The town is quite large . My hands are getting cold. It might get dark soon. There’s a hippopotamus. My first hippopotamus. I can see a big building. On May 23, 1430, Jeanne d’Arc, who was fighting here, was captured by the Burgundians and sold to England. Jeanne d’Arc was found guilty by the Inquisition and burned at the stake in Rouen on May 30th of the following year, at the age of just 19. It looks very old, looking at it like this. How many years did this building come into being? This is a town hall in the Flamboyant Gothic architectural style, built between 1498 and the early 16th century . It is said that the Compiègne Forest was the place where the armistice agreement with Germany during World War I was made, and the place where France signed the surrender document to Germany during World War II. This area was an important stage in the history of France and Europe. This time, we introduced Compiègne, a city that can be reached from Paris in about an hour by car or train. We hope this will be helpful for your future trips to Paris. We look forward to your thoughts and comments! So, I hope you will have a good day tomorrow! See you! I’m off now !
