Tools We’ve ACTUALLY Used | #vannerscollaborating Jun 2025
So welcome
to this month’s vanners collaboration. And this month, it’s about the tools
we carry in our van. And the tools we’ve actually used
when we’ve been on our travels. I’ve got just about all my tool
kit out here. Obviously, I don’t use all of this. A lot of this is just in case. But in this video, I’m going to have
a look at the tools I actually use. Now, don’t forget
to watch the other videos in this list. There may be people who actually use
all of these tools. Who knows? so first thing is fuses. I’ve had a number of, occasions,
and this one mainly on the, swift Bolero we had where fuses have gone. So I always carry it off. Which carry a bit of sticky tape with me. Now, I always carry some fuses with me. And, I’ve got a selection of fuses
here, but, the fuse I’ve used
the most is the fridge fuse. Now, on the bolero, the fridge fuse blew. And it stopped the fridge working
and it stopped the rear view screen working. Lost our reversing camera. Yeah, both of them are packed up
haven’t they? Not both of them. Them, I mean, they the main one. Is the, the, the bigger one up
which is a clip on one, stopped working. So I thought well I know what they’re on. I’ll go back to the old one
which was underneath the original one. And that’s not working either. And as I was fiddling, shouldn’t say
I was fiddling, as I was looking at it, it actually fell off the windscreen
and fell off the windscreen. And that’s quite a common fault. So always carry some fuses. And there’s a nice little box here
that’s got some bulbs in it, just in case. Also on the Bolero,
we had the carousel door. The door that’s just under
the sink, came loose I had a problem with this cupboard door
not shutting properly. It wasn’t latching properly. I actually fixed it myself. And all I’ve done is. I added some extra screws in there and a set of silly little screws
that hold those on very short. So I put some proper bigger screws on. So I actually replaced them with
some wood screws, and it was all right. Right up until I sold it. But obviously for that
you need a screwdriver. Tend to carry one of these. I’ve got a load of other tools
in there, but, something like this little ratchet screwdriver and some, some bits, some screw bits. And often
that’s all you need to fix a problem. And there’s a screwdriver. On the Kon-Tiki sport. We had the habitation door go, the actual spring in the door went. Now, I think I fixed this at home, but
I could have fixed it while I was away, because to get to the door,
to get to the spring mechanism, I had to take the trim off the off
the door. And the door’s got like a plastic trim,
very similar to the one we’ve got here, but it was actually held on by Velcro. But it seemed to be quite difficult
to remove. I invested in a set of these. But these are trim tools and they don’t. It doesn’t weigh very much. And, you know,
different types of trim tools here. I don’t want to get them all out because
they’re actually difficult to put away. But these sort of things, and it’s very useful
just to have those with you so it doesn’t weigh too much and you
never know when you’re going to need it. So if you’re interested in that’s a which Hado eight pack, I’ll put some links in the description
in case you’re interested. Yeah. Yeah. The the other thing. I haven’t brought it in with me.
I have to go and get it. Is spray. Always carry some spray with it. Now I use some stuff, called GT 85. I have used WD 40 as well. Let me go and get some. GT 85. Now I had a problem
with the towing electrics. I think we were at Bunree at the time
with the Bolero and the towing
the indicator was flashing too quickly, which normally means
there’s a connection problem. A spray of this stuff in the the socket,
sorted it out, cleaned up the sockets
and got them working again. Brilliant stuff. This used it on the tow frame
and all sorts of stuff. So well worth having in your toolkit. Oh yeah. So I mentioned having a set of screwdriver
bits. Well, it’s also useful
to have one of these tiny little, Scrooge fivers and these, you know,
they like watchmaker screws. The reason is that I’ve actually got a spare one here, but this is the 12 volt socket for the pump for the, external water
pump for pumping in from the Aqua Roll. Now, the plug on one of these
has played up about three times. Now the lead’s come loose
and you can only repair it. One of these, a set of small
screwdrivers, is really useful. It’s just just the little screws
that hold the wires in place. While we are in Europe on this van,
the habitation door wouldn’t wouldn’t close,
you know, seem to remember and I, I tried we tried to fix that, Trev
and I tried to fix it. We managed a temporary repair
using, cable ties. Cable
ties are always useful to have around. Now, I normally got a set in my little box
of all sorts of bits, but I couldn’t find it,
so I must have misplaced my cable ties. So it’s been useful this video, really,
because I know now now I need a new set of cable ties. Now, the last thing again is on this van
is the catch that holds the shower door broke, and the only way we could hold the shower door close was with a strap. So a strap. Like this. And one that you can thread round. Something always useful
to have some straps that you can tie round things to hold things in place. In fact, I’ve got a whole box full of them straps and. Tapes. I mean, I could do a whole video on
the things I carry with me just in case, but this is really about the things
I’ve used whilst we’ve been on the road, which hopefully isn’t too much,
but you never know. So don’t forget to watch the other videos
in that it’d be interesting to see what people
actually carry in their tool bag. And if you haven’t already, please
consider subscribing and give us a thumbs up
and do watching the videos. We’ll see you soon. Bye then.

Are safety shoes on your list?😀
I always misplace my tools(I put them somewhere "safe" then forget where) and end up with loads of replicas (oh the pleasures of getting older). I also find a hammer to be a useful tool. So satisfying to pummel the offending item to bits after spending wasted hours trying to fix it!!🤣🤣 Thank you Bob.
That is a very comprehensive set of tools. Trim tools can be very handy 👍
It's a good job you have a huge garage on your motorhome. I think we where at Dingwall one time when the fridge fuse blew.
Hi Bob that’s a comprehensive array of straps and tools . Gt85 is brilliant stuff.
Yes fuses very important we have a box of blade fuses in our fuse cupboard 👌🏼
The old wire coat hangers are handy.
Lots of uses for example
Things like a failed exhaust hanger can be made safe enough to get to a garage
I have a 2003 autosleeper clubman
Its very basic and that helps mitigate its advanced years.
No central locking
Wind up windows
No airbag or abs
No dpf
Monocoque one piece fibreglass bodyshell for the habitation area.
But yeah
A toolkit is certainly a must
Good video Bob and your greatest advantage i think is your wife.
Quietly and humbly dispensing you with the right answers with amazing timing
I refuse to mention fuses. I forgot about fuses lol
I'm beginning to think I should remove most of the regular screwdrivers and use one like yours with the handle and set of bits. Should save space and keep the weight down. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, that’s a lot of stuff😂 really organised.
We're slowly developing the 'just in case' bits we carry. Trev gave us advice to get good duct tape. We christened it in the Outer Hebrides!!
N&Nx
Hi Bob, wow you have a lot of tools boxes there. Yes like you say the screwdriver is very important. The trim tools sound very useful. Really enjoyed your video, take care x Julie and Tony x
Your box of ‘things’ looks like my bag of ‘things’! 😂
Just watched Trev on Poshcats and an had a extra pack of cable ties they could have been yours after that job he helped you with. 😂 we all need a good to set of tools. 👍
Thank you. Always practical!
After watching you and a couple of the others, I’ve ordered a set of fuses. Take care Gill
Great video bob and i dont blame you keeping things on board just in case its great to have some tools to help you out when you need it ive always done the same with my cars best to be prepared hope you jenny and poppy are well daniel
Me? I carry spares for most issues, water dump taps, sink waste, waste pipe, hinges, spare relays, fuses, MCA blocks which our F Line has fitted, screws & bolts, 230v CBE sockets, spare external locker/garage locks, wing mirror glass, 5m of 1.5mm cable & 5m of 2.5mm cable, 12v cable, convoluted sleeve & fasteners … the list is endless. Rationalising your toolkit is important. Both Torx & Allen keys are a must for a modern moho as is a decent rechargeable LED work light. I have an electrical tool box & a general tool box. A couple of the 'Stanley' boxes in your vlog are a perfect choice for carrying the critical stuff.
Thanks Bob, another goodun👍
Good video as always. We have so many fuses as the Kontiki was always blowing them, not so bad now but we got more with the Carthago. If anyone sees us on site and needs one they are welcome. Had the same door issue as you as well, the trim tools look great.
Excellent video. I remember these fixes you did. 😄👍🏻🚐 Trev
Never leave home without gaffer tape . A million uses
Excellent information Bob. I agree on GT85, it is great stuff and I have just stopped the fridge door squeaking with the same stuff :). I have to say, I am not keen on this trend I see of having a side facing camera. It doesn't work for me. Sorry, I find it distracting. Ian
