Exploring Historic FRANCE | Part 2

hello and welcome back to the channel so I’m just down St bard’s Bay in Jersey about to go for a sea swim um so I’ll show you a bit of that the um tide is on its way up it’s about half 5 now and high tide is 1816 i think the sea temperature today is just over 14° so it should be nice so I shall hand you back to Tracy in France hi everyone we’re Tash and Tracy and welcome back to our channel we’re two adventurers from Jersey sharing our life on the road in our Expedition 68 camper van last autumn we spent three unforgettable months traveling across Europe in our camper soaking up the freedom of the open road this year we’ve been keeping things local exploring the stunning coastlines and the history closer to home so whether it’s sea swimming kaying or paddle boarding you’ll find us diving into adventure whenever we can so buckle up subscribe if you haven’t already and join us for another adventure good morning it’s Thursday we are at Lur de Odon which is actually I think got 10th century route but this one is 14th century i’m going to think get a look inside [Music] i don’t know if you can pick it up but the bells are being rung for Ascension Day the fireplaces are ostentatious and they show that the tower is actually a home to a noble family and in fact the principal rooms are served by a secondary room and then other elements such as servants rooms and latrines are within the thickness of the walls you can also see the wonderfully modern but traditional new stone staircase so this demonstrates the strategic importance of this tower which is why it was first erected in the 11th 12th century it was then abandoned and then it’s been through several iterations but some of what we’re looking at today is 14th century in fact quite a lot of it’s 14th century and it’s been through a major restoration paid for by the states um in 1992 and I think that’s when a lot of this infrastructure will have been put in [Music] [Music] our next shuttle which hopefully we can get a private tour of we can get in a very impressive moat oh that’s that’s quite stunning isn’t that lovely so this is Chatu Goule which was cited here from the 10th century but what you’re looking at here is a refacing of the earlier medieval mana shuttle once inside you can see the opulence of 17th and 18th century decoration the wooden beams the amazing paintings and these very large fireplaces we were wandering around looking at 18th century tapestries hung on the walls and a remarkable set of rooms very clearly demonstrating the Marquis of Gouain’s wealth and power in this part of North the rooms indeed had the remains of Chinese wallpaper which was leather and sadly replicated in vinyl the budoir was particularly interesting although we were coming to the end and people were somewhat tired so this is the ceremonial garden and what’s interesting is that the gates appear to line up with a church fire wonder if that’s an accident of uh fate or is a design but unusually there’s no central grand hall to this building access the upper rooms by the two towers in the front elevation [Music] so these are the market halls the harness at Cissson and these date from the 14th century very very good condition and brilliant timber work fantastic bracing and beautiful king frame trusses and actually very little modern strapping [Music] [Music] so there’s honest repair this is the original stone which wears away very quickly and then where it’s been replaced it’s just been left as a very clear toolled piece and the same with the brick work so I like the way they’ve done that but it’s been a huge restoration here this is also a place that’s got S Philip still in his sarcophagus or coffin dates from the 8th 800s so very very early church would be Saxon in a UK context quite an amazing church i’m so pleased we finished our tour here so there was a later roof here and I think in the 20th century looking at the structure here it’s actually been um removed and you can see across here there’s the half round windows of the Carolian period which is similar to our Saxon period and you can see on the other side here of the aisles reminiscent of that period It’s rather a lovely garden in the sunshine [Music] [Music] so I hope you’ve enjoyed this trip with the Sausite Gonzas and all the wonderful places we’ve managed to been to so thank you very much for watching and uh we’ll see you on the next one bye for now [Music] when you just know that it’s right it’s one in a li time for the first time in my life i’m right on the edge now i’m looking down no matter how hard I try can see the ground i’m on the edge now taking the lead
