Arriving At Ebury Hill Camping And Caravanning Club Site | Westie Memories
So what are we going? We’ll going to Ebury Hill
caravan at. Hang on. Not so. We’re off to Ebury, are you? Ebury camping and caravanning club
and yes, Shrewsbury. We haven’t been there for many years. Blimey, could you speed up a bit? Yeah.
So we’re. I’m going over the Mersey Gateway. Yeah. Yeah, we’re going a little bit faster now. He was doing the back. 30 miles an hour. You don’t need to point it that way,
because that’s pointing that way. That’s not on. Right, Tara? Are you driving? I’m falling asleep. As you can see, Tara is with us. And we’re on our way to somewhere
we’ve not been for quite a while. Quite a few years,
and we’ve never filmed it. It’s a camping and caravanning club site. Yeah, it’s a no facilities site. So there’s no toilets or shower blocks,
but there is electric. And like I say,
we haven’t been there for a while. It’s near Shrewsbury. That’s right, it is. It’s got quite a bit of history for us
as well, isn’t it? Yeah.
From before we were really doing YouTube. So it’s got lots of memories
and lots of friends. At least in present time with their. And it’s the start of our southern tour. So we’re on our way on our southern tour. Yeah. 21 days. 21 day. So should be good. Weather’s been awful. Yeah. It’s not. We know that a good start. So we so clean the van. Clean
the van. And it’s been raining ever since. Yeah, it was the 5th of June today, isn’t it? Yeah. And, hoping
the weather is going to improve, but. Yeah, heading down a then. Pandy. Pandey. Tredegar and then into Dorset. No. Somerset. Oh yeah. Somerset. Wells. Yeah. Yeah. Then down into Dorset to Malton. Not to be confused with Malton. A march. In Marsh. In Marsh and then across to round two. Yeah. So, And first. Yeah. Back up to Winchester. Where? Maisie. Alison. Holly and, Skye. Yeah. And then a one night stop on the way home. Yeah.
And then I go to the dentist. Oh, great. With three under. To go. Round three, I think it. Is another £300 gone, isn’t it? It’s really. Yeah. Not cheap. Yeah. Yeah. So I’ve got the two crates. People often ask how do they travel? Oh, Tara, I know my travels in that one
on Poppy travels in that one, and we lower the table
so it traps the what’s. It’s down there. So Tara would prefer to travel there. I think I. Think she would,
but it’s the one slight problem. Yeah, yeah. Let me just show you my fridge
or our fridge. I should say. It is absolutely rammed. We had the shop in yesterday,
so most of it’s gone in here. And we’re fully packed up, aren’t we? Well, yeah, we’ve got the got the cow
because we’re doing something with the car. Oh, my one where, down at the tree. Tree? That’s on it. Right. First time. Yeah. I’m going to get the
the A-frame crash bar tested. So that involves taking it off the car. So I have to bring the car
with us to get it dismantled. Well, yeah. Yeah.
So that’s why we. The main reason we’ve got the car with us. Yeah. Got the awning with us, and, yeah,
we can put it up somewhere. And that’s in the car as well. That’s in the car. Yeah. And I’ve got my bike with me. We’ve got the fridge with us. Yes. Yeah.
So we’re fully, fully kitted up. I don’t think there’s
anything we’ve forgotten. I found out later, won’t we,
there’s something silly even to. Yeah, we’re actually stopped in a layby
because we’re trying to kill some times we had to get going
because the dustbin men will come in. And we were struggling to get the van out
of the our of the drive and hitched up. So we, we left a bit earlier. Off the A41 and onto the A49. Lovely bit of road between. Here we go. Yeah. Yeah yeah yeah. Couldn’t see for the truck. Continued on the A49. At the roundabout. Take the first exit to A53. In one quarter mile. Turn right onto the road. Yeah, I think. I think this agrees
with their instructions. Always find there maps a bit bit confusing because they’ve got
all the different directions. But we’re on the A 53. Yeah. It shows the roundabout. And then it shows a turning on the right turn right off to the road. Little bit hidden.
This road. That’s a sign. A scratch sign. Yeah. It’s always reassuring in the. Yeah. It’s one and a half miles. Arrive at Ebury Hil Camping
and Caravanning club site on the right. Ebb bury? Always known it as E-Bury. Yeah. I’ve taken the balance. £19. £19? Yeah. And we paid 25 deposit. Come on ducks. Weather for ducks and don’t mind me,
I’ll just. Skirt round you. Yeah. Not bothered at all.. No. I think that’s £22 a night, isn’t it? Is it? I think so. Not bad, is it? You’ve no facilities, have you,
but It’s a lovely little site. You see,
you’re not too far from Shrewsbury either. No, there’s loads in the area,
and that will go through that in a bit. We’ve been to this area
quite a lot haven’t we? You’re not far from Ironbridge. You’re not far from Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury. itself. Blists Hill. Yeah. No. You’ve also got terrific views over there. Here. Yeah. Across into Wales. In a quarter of a mile, arrive
at Ebury Hill Camping and Caravanning club site on the right. Yeah. Arriving at Ebury Hill Camping
and Caravanning Club Site on the right. Caravanning club site. On the right. Steep that. Yes. This was an old RAAF base, wasn’t it? This. I think it was an old Army base. Army base? Yeah. Had some friends who used to be wardens
here. That’s right. Who? We knew because they had a Westie. Yeah. Margaret and Ray. Yeah. Margaret is sadly no longer with us, but,
Ray is. I think he’s 92. Yeah. A lot of the things they did at the site of the original signs and. Yeah, planted areas
and whatever the dog walk they did when they were here. I’m just going to fill our water. Yeah, the Motorhome service point. So yeah, you can reverse
onto that and empty out. No need to empty anything at the moment. Just need to fill up. A nice little lake, pond. You know. Ducks and everything. It’s nice, isn’t it? I think it’s a quarry. I think it’s an old quarry. There. And it’s reception. And we’re just here, just filling it
with water, and they’ll go pick a pitch. Probably over there
A chemical disposal point. Very nice. On the right hand side. Yeah. Okay. Yeah.
So this is the quarry area, isn’t it? Yes. I think Ray had something to do with
the pond setting up the pond back there. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. This is where the Hardstanding are
aren’t they? Yeah. We just as well. We’ve booked a hardstanding and. It’s a bit wet. I thought this one on your right. Yeah. It’s quite nice. Not on trees or anything. Get the car. Unhitched. Get set up. Which is,
just about wide enough for an awning and for. Okay, I’ll. Just say the same on most caravan. It’s the same on most camping
and caravanning sites. Pitches are not as wide as they are
on the caravan or motorhome club sites. It’s, just about wide
enough for an awning or a car. Some people park like ours on the grass
if they’ve got an awning. Yeah. Oh, right. By this storage area. 16 amp hook up,
like I say, no toilet block. Take the dogs will walk in a minute. Tent pitches. Sorry. Grass pitches up here. Quite a big area up here. Hey, that’s the way,
another way is the dog walk over there. Over there. So I’ll go round and just want to have a look. What was up here?
The dog goes all the way around. If I remember. And not that many hard
standing pitches here. And a lot of grass pitches, would be lovely cause up here
if Poppy liked trees. Yeah, this will be quite nice. Quiet corner wouldn’t it? It would. Bit soggy. Yeah, soggy. Here. Not ideal for a four
and half ton motorhome. No, no not really. No. Come on. Okay. Plenty of sniffs. Yeah. Interesting bit of mud there. Be an interesting bit of mud down here. Yeah, that goes. So it goes back
around the outside of the site. Yeah.
So it could do that. Yeah. You can. Very peaceful here. Just hear the birds. This is a cracking dog walking. Yeah. So it’s alright isn’t it, Pops? Do you remember it. I don’t think tara’s ever been. No. I’m sorry. You know. Right. But Go that way or we can go that way. We go this way, pops. it’s probably one of the best dog walks on any camping and caravanning club site
anywhere in the world. In the world. And what a shame. Rains started. Yeah. It’s the top area. Is that where we had the meetup? Up there? Oh, yeah. That’s. That’s where we came over.
It wasn’t. It came over there. That’s right. This is where we were all those years ago. Oh that’s right. Yeah. We had a Westie meetup up here
several, three, about three hours from it. Well here we are, who many westies can get
get in a wet awning? Who’s falling off the thing then? In? Yeah. Under a wet awning. (Chatter) (Chatter) What’s up Bonnie, shivering. Yeah. Look at this. You must be on a used to being on a mountain. (Chatter) Oh, you. Good night. Bye bye, people. Bye. Oh. So you. (Chatter) Which we have pictures of. Yeah. And our friends Bob and Aileen
might remember one of them, too. Well, I think I remember two of them all. All of them. They came to all of them. Oh good. Yeah, we were up here 2014. Well, the mask in your pocket. Is that the last time you wore that coat? There’s these strange pitches
here, aren’t they? In the long and a in a row? So I don’t know how
you get into the middle one. I suppose you’re going to go across
the grass, haven’t you? These two are the only right. Oh that’s right. Yeah. I you know, you walk into the field here. Isn’t that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
We held it held it in this sort of area. Here is what,
like seasonals in the here. No. Yeah.
You got all these pictures in a row here. And access to the dog walk again. Yeah. It’s good. I think
we’re going to head back to the van. I think. Yeah, we think there was some sort
of building here originally. As I say, they do. The result. Oh, what’s happened, isn’t it? So they just stick it all in a bag.
And some. An expert in recycling. Does your recycling for you
rather than as amateurs. Don’t think these are pictures
that I thought. They used to be pictures here, but no, no. Parking. Did you get in there? No, no. There, there. Yeah. Right. No, it’s a bin store. And. The glorious British summer. Hey! Stop moaning. No, sorry. We had glorious wether in Ireland. Bins stores. Yes. They’re stores isn’t it? Yeah, yeah. Use the entrance or one of the entrances
because you can come in both ways. Kind of. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I think we’ve had the best of the views. Come here for. Yeah. This memory of Dudley Ashton was a warden at Ebury Hill
March 78 to March 84. That’s why it’s called Dudley Walk. It’s picture here. Oh, no. Yeah. The Mytton and Mermaid. Actually, dog friendly bar only. Lovely sitting by the river. Loads of walks and cycles. Yeah. Two miles to home in Abbey. Cafe. Bus stop. 40 mile cycle ride. Okay. Cafes and farm shops. Fast food. Oh, yeah. To Henry’s Pub and grill, Corbet arms. Not dog friendly red lion. Dog friendly parts. Right. Loads. Park and ride in Shrewsbury. Supermarkets. Oh, yeah. It’s a hillfort of late Bronze Age. Oh, it’s good. So, follies. I am bridge. Battlefield of prey. Centre. Bird of prey. Race into Shrewsbury Castle. Ebenezer Scrooge. Stokesay. Castle. Been there. It was good. Bridgnorth Cliff railway. Done that. Shrewsbury prison. 28 miles to Welshpool 27 or so, Oswestry, Church Stretton or Whitchurch House, which is 30 miles away. Peter, Oswestry donkeys years. So there’s loads to do
and see whilst you’re here. We’re only here for a couple of nights. We were thinking of going. Oh, saying to go into rocks. It’s a sampling there, Oh a 12. Yeah, something like that. Yeah. So Roman channels Roman town.
I mean the of. We have done going to Shrewsbury
haven’t we worked on going to Bliss Hill. Yeah we I’ve been to Iron Bridge. Yeah. We might just so go to rock stand
and have a mooch around. Yeah. Places we haven’t seen. Oh there is loads in this area. Yeah. Yeah,
it’s ideal if you want to go fishing. To go with your caravanning. That face. It’s nice to see her with us though. Yeah. We’re
going to enjoy ourselves aren’t we Tara. We are Poppy, honestly. It will stop raining eventually. 3:00. It says. Enjoyed it here pops have you? Okay. Nice and quiet isn’t apart from all the phones
buzzing and beeping and, annoying, isn’t I? We we find that a little bit
about the history of this place, and I think Jennie’s best to explain
we knew it was a World War Two base, but didn’t know exactly what
it was or couldn’t remember. But it was established to test small semi
armoured personnel vehicles fitted with a Bren gun. So Bren gun carriers. Yeah. Bren gun carriers. Yeah. Prior to the Normandy landings and 1944, which was like yesterday,
even at June 6th. Yeah. These vehicles had to be modified
so they could be driven through water. Yeah. And so to them,
the site comprised a series of concrete roads, barrack blocks, offices and stores. And in the northern part of the quarry
and the were in the quarry. That’s one way. Yeah. Within the hill. Because it was originally a Hill four,
wasn’t it? Yeah I know. Hill full, is a pool of water
into which a concrete ramp descends. Now, I think that’s that’s at the end there where
they’ve developed it into a fishing lake. Yeah. So that was quite interesting. So that’s what it was. Okay. Yeah, I enjoyed it. It’s really, really quiet. That’s the beauty of it. I don’t know why it’s so quiet. Maybe
because we’re in this sort of quarry area. Yeah. You do find with camping
and caravanning club sites. They have these quieter hours done right. Well, I think we’ve always found
most people stick to a list from 11 to 7. I don’t think it’s even that.
There’s hardly any traffic noise. You know, it’s only when you go out on the dog walk, you can hear
a little bit of the traffic, but very, very quiet and peaceful night sleep. So highly recommend. We definitely come back here. It’s a pity
we haven’t been back here sooner, so. Yeah. Enjoyed it. The dogs
enjoy it as well. Nice walks and and we enjoyed our little trip out yesterday
which will probably be in another video. We went to Wroxexter Roman town. Yeah. And to Ironbridge
in a little wander around ironbridge. Yeah. So. Yeah. No. It’s good. Yeah. So, today to Pandy. Yeah. So we’ll catch you next one. Yeah. All right. See you soon. Bye then. had a view, didn’t I? The surrounding countryside. Nice little garden. Wouldn’t mind this myself. No, quite nice. I just spent ages trying to work out
when this bridge was erected, because we could have just
googled it right away. We did

👍👍👍
So was definitely a dogging site
I will get my coat 😆
I spent many a holiday there as a child in the late 70’s & early 80’s with mum & dad in a sprite alpine. On the top level there was a gate to a field, I remember the cows would come over and have a nosey at who we were.
Thanks for showing it again.
Next time you are in Shropshire try exploring the Long Mynd, Devils chair, Stiperstones beautiful countryside countryside
