VERSAILLES AND THE REPUBLIC: From Jeu de Paume, Revolution to Congress
[Music] i got myself um puka i actually got two i know it’s a bit too much but I haven’t eaten anything since yesterday like early dinner and frankly I have a long day ahead so I was thinking might as well just have two pan shakola and I’m going to have my coffee and then I’m going to be taking you to the side so I think uh two pound shaka was a little bit too much i feel like it was too much and um but it’s okay it’s okay guys never go to a supermarket or restaurant or cafe hungry cuz you will get more than what you want i finished it anyway but now I feel like I don’t need to eat until much later in the afternoon and I wasn’t planning to go to the gym but now I’m thinking maybe I should be going to the gym or maybe I just walk it off anyway so I’m on my way to Versail today is a beautiful day literally not a single not a single cloud in the sky it’s just absolutely gorgeous so let’s see how the visit goes [Music] before we continue further we just have to mention that this episode was recorded over several separate visits and therefore we are both present although our clothes will change every now and then so why did we pick this subject specifically now well this year Versai celebrates the 150th anniversary of the third republic or precisely the year 1875 when the constitution of the third republic was adopted even though the republic was proclaimed on the 4th of September 1870 it took almost 5 years for this to happen due to the continuous opposition between the monarchists and republicans but let’s first rewind all the way back to May 1789 when France was going through a major political crisis louis 16 convened Lazetta General on May 5th bringing together for the first time since 1614 the three orders clergy nobility and third estate quickly the third estate representing the people felt ignored and misrepresented so on June 17 its deputies proclaimed themselves as La National claiming to hold sovereignty 3 days later the same deputies found the whole of Minipleas where they were meant to congregate closed some say it was done on purpose in an effort to disperse the deputies and prevent them from sitting without wasting time the deputies proceeded to the closest large hole they could find las a hole dedicated to an old sport similar to tennis [Music] as you can see it is a simple building but don’t be fooled as on that day this place became the theater of a major historic moment for France it is here in a tense atmosphere that 578 deputies present swore anonymously except for one abstension never to separate before having given a constitution to France it was Jean Silvan Bay whose statue graces this hold today who read the following we swear to never separate and to gather wherever circumstances require it until the constitution of the kingdom is established and affirmed on solid foundations this oath mark a symbolic break with the absolute power of the king it is here where national affirmed its legitimacy in the name of the people in a twist of fate Bay first became the mayor of Perry but by 1791 his call to order during the Shamar’s massacre alienated the radical revolutionaries he was first arrested in 1793 and then guillotined joining other victims of the terror in the center is a fresco by Luke Olivia Mer completed in 1883 depicting las ceremon duj the pom event it is based off the initial depiction of the event in the unfinished preparatory drawing by Jacqu Louu Davidid part of which can be seen in the shimatic at the shut itself you can actually see it in our episode from the said attic linked in the pinned command of this video many historians agree that it is actually here where the French Revolution started in a north of unity and freedom by June 27th 1789 Louis 16th ordered the deputies of the nobility and the clergy to join LeBl officially giving it recognition a few days later by July 9th Leamblas proclaimed itself as Leambl constituent responsible for drafting a constitution for France on July 14th people captured Leasti in Perry and yet Louis 16th noted in his diary French for nothing fast forward to the early morning of October 6 and the royal family was escorted back to Pahi making the end of Versailles as the center of power between October 1789 and January 1793 Louis 16th went from a weakened absolute monarch to a discredited constitutional monarch and finally to a prisoner named Lu Capet accused of treason the key events such as the flight to Vahen the war against Austria the insurrection of pale dehi on August 10th 1792 and the discovery of the iron cabinet sealed his fate driving the following king to the guillotine on January 21st 1793 [Music] this is Lassal de Congre or the congress hall and it’s an extremely emblematic place that is still used for major political events since the foundation of the third republic and although it was first used in 1875 to truly understand its history we need to rewind a few years back following the military defeat of Sedon and the surrender of Napoleon III in September 1870 part of France had been occupied by the Prussian army whose staff had settled at the chatau the German Empire was proclaimed in the Hall of Miris in January 1871 at the time the public authorities fled to Bahub from Parah that had been besieged and then bombed by the Prussians chancellor Bismar demanded an elected assembly to conclude the peace he imposed very harsh conditions on France including the indemnity of 5 billion gold Franks to Germany along with the loss of Alzas and part of Lenin once peace was negotiated by Tiier the deputies decided to leave Bordo to get closer to Paris however the assembly was wary of the capital who refused peace and considered it as humiliation the deputies therefore decided to settle at Versai which the Prussians had just left the assembly’s first session was held at L Royale of the chatau as it was the only hall big enough to fit 690 deputies it was here that the deputies held a secret committee on March 22nd 1871 to discuss the situation of Lakamun and Pi but that’s a whole other subject we should film about separately it turned out that Opira was not suitable for regular sessions so a new hall needed to be built to meet the needs of these 690 deputies the architect Edmund Dejoli designed this grand hall which is integrated into the chateau while respecting its historical character from 1875 to 1879 this congress hall became the seat of the chamber of deputies here they debated and passed key laws for the third republic including the 1875 Wuon amendment which established a republican system with a president elected for a 7-year term this followed after a potential monarch Henry V com shambok rejected the three color flag as France symbol it marked the final opportunity in the French history for a monarchy to be restored the Congress Hall is also where the first presidential elections were held such as that of July in 1879 after the return of parliament to par in 1879 Palib Burbon for the deputies palu for the senate the congress hall remained the place of exceptional meetings of the parliament in congress that is to say when the two chambers las and senate meet together these meetings served to review the constitution elect the president of the republic until 1958 and to host presidential speeches since 2008 it should be noted that the parliament kept its rooms offices and lodgings at the chatau until 2005 where it gave up everything to the museum of chat deai except the congress hall and their adjoining rooms [Music] this year Lucai celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Third Republic to mark this occasion the apartment of the President of the Congress is exceptionally open to the public from February to the end of September the apartment was furnished at the same time as the Congress Hall between June and November 1875 under the direction of architects Admund Deji and Julian Guade it is built on the site of old apartments occupied by members of the royal family under Lansan regime this space is designed to serve as an official residence and place of work for the president of Congress the apartment is decorated in a neol 15 style typical of the aesthetics of Vai in the 19th century with ornate woodwork delicate moldings and rock inspired elements the apartment includes several rooms such as state living rooms an office and functional spaces for the president of Congress and while the furniture you see today is not what was here at the time it was chosen with the help of Mobile to be as close to the apartment’s original state as possible as we finish this visit we hope you now have a clearer idea of the profound connection and role of Versailles to the French Republic chat de Versai is more than just a magnificent domain of Louis 14th and his descendants it is the seat of the nation’s history and power bringing together the past the present and the future of France
In this episode, we explore the pivotal moments that shaped modern France — all within the walls of Versailles. From the fiery beginnings of the French Revolution and the iconic Serment du Jeu de Paume (Tennis Court Oath) at La Salle du Jeu de Paume, to the fall of Louis XVI and the founding of the Third Republic, this journey traces the transformation from monarchy to democracy.
We take you inside La Salle du Congrès and the rarely seen Apartments of the President of the Congress, revealing how Versailles evolved from a symbol of royal absolutism to a seat of republican power. This is the story of the Republic at Versailles — past and present.
Recorded in October 2024, January, April and May 2025.
