Northern France Tour | Nord | Aisne | Oise | Somme Ep:3 Watten, Éperlecques, Cassel, Haillicourt.
hi I’m No i’m Adele and this is Archie welcome to our Ben van [Music] adventures hello and welcome back and thank you for joining us on our Northern France tour we’ve crammed quite a lot into this video from UNESCO World Heritage sites to World War II bomb factories and the odd windmill so come with us and enjoy the views the Brick and Stone windmill dates from 1731 and was built with materials from the former Watang Abbey the mill operated until the 1930s it lost two sales in 1937 through storm damage and was reutilized in 1940 as an observation tower for the German army it was bought by the local community in 1985 and has been completely renovated and in 1994 it was once again allowed to mill the grain as it did before we’re traveling through the town of Watton to visit the World War II site Block House de Epilech we’ve got a stop the bunker was built by Nazi Germany in 1943 and was originally intended to be the launching facility for the V2 rockets over 6,000 enforced workers locals and prisoners of war were brought to the site cramming 40 or 50 into each of these carriages [Applause] [Music] construction continued 24 hours a day it took 120,000 cub m of concrete to build the bunker the roof were 5 m thick the walls 3 1/2 m thick it was to be impregnable to Allied bombings or so they thought it’s freezing keep going [Music] it isn’t until you go inside that you can appreciate the size of this building it’s absolute the bucket the colossal door that you just have through close the passage to the railway lines it is 7 and 1/4 ft thick over 3,000 cubic feet filled with concrete over 215 tons in motion could supply up to 3 m [Music] israel [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh we’ve left the block house and are now moving to the village of Cassel for our overnight stop [Music] cassell is built on the top of a hill and on a clear day you’re supposed to be able to see the coast today was murky and gray so we didn’t get those views but we did have a look around the windmill and lovely public gardens we’re back on the road going to visit a quite unique UNESCO World Heritage site [Music] we’ve just stopped off uh for some lunch at a town called uh Hikor uh and it’s so we found out a UNESCO World Heritage site and that’s because of these slag heaps that you can see in the background this area used to be a major mining area but the slag heaps and surrounding area have been made into a nature reserve and UNESCO have awarded it status you can actually climb to the top of this one here it’s uh 480 steps to the top uh it’s something I’m not going to be doing today but if you’re ever in the area I would say it’s well worth coming to have a look [Music] the history of the village of Blaine can be traced back to the 13th century his church was built in 1505 and was commissioned by Prince Charles of Borbin as a gesture of gratitude as his daughter was saved from her fits of lunacy during the battles of World War I in 1915 the village was entirely destroyed and the church was left in ruins he wants to go we’ve left the village of a plane and moved up the road to the French national world war I memorial site of NRAA de [Music] lauret hands that gave to me each day that sought to soo the worries away in this life I will see no more the hands that love me the hands that taught me right from wrong that I’ll remember when you’re gone the hands that helped me through the years these hands that love me we never had forever who knew the end was home yeah i have the memories in my heart a goodbye in every tear for these hands that gave to me each day that sword to s the worries the ring of remembrance has become a key monument on the Great War Remembrance Trail opened in 2014 its walls are engraved with the names of the 580,000 soldiers who fell during the Great War [Music] well that was a very interesting if somber afternoon we’ve now moved on to the village of Corsy Lucato or Freak which has got a really interesting castle for us to walk around we’re going to do that tomorrow so first it’s time to set up and have a spot of supper we hope you’ll join us as we continue our Northern France tour bye for now [Music] [Music] thank you for watching and coming along on our journey if you liked our little video please consider subscribing and don’t forget to hit the notification bell for our next belly adventure if you’d like to follow us on our travels we’re on Facebook we’re on Instagram and you can read about our adventures on Blogger we hope you can join us next time bye for now [Music]

Eperleques is superb, the nearby Chateau Gandspette is a great campsite
One more interesting and very enjoyable vlog, that Blockhaus is unbelievable, we visited years ago and couldn’t get over the size of it. Northern France is certainly full of history, both very old and not so old. Those slag heaps have been put to great use and we must take a look next time we’re near them.
Another great vid. Thanks!
We stayed on the aire at Saint Valéry sur Somme on Saturday night. It's very good and St Valéry is wonderful. Maybe worth a visit on your next trip?
It's bigger than Le Crotoy but just as charming without being as big and busy as Honfleur
Another very informative Vlog.We need to get your subscribers up then you will be monetised for your efforts.
