when Katakoy’s pastel waterfront came into view the clock towers pointed hat the red awnings of fish restaurants the dome of Osman mosque catching the sun I spotted Deafne leaning against a ballard her Doc Martens tapping an impatient rhythm she hadn’t changed since university the same ride of black curls escaping her hat the same cigarette dangling from her lips despite the no smoking signs the same knowing smirk as she caught sight of me “there you are,” she called over the seagull’s cries “i was about to send a search party to rescue you from the carpet salesman.” Her hug smelled of jasmine soap and the almond oil she used on her leather jacket ready to see real est the catakoy shops announced itself with a cacophony of shouts and sense that made my senses real deafne steered me through the chaos with practiced ease past wheelbarrows piled with purple artichokes still trailing their spiky leaves past pyramids of spices in every shade of sunset saffron gold sumac red peppers fiery crimson
