Paris Metro: 10 Things You MUST Know About Navigo!
Welcome back to Paris Top Tips! If you’re planning to use public transport in Paris, you’ve probably heard of the Navigo Easy and Navigo Découverte passes. But even after my detailed video on Paris transport in 2025, I keep getting many questions about these passes. Since paper tickets are no longer available for purchase, it’s more important than ever to understand how Navigo solutions work. So today, I’m here to clear up the confusion with 10 essential answers about the Navigo passes. I’ve added chapters in the video, so you can easily jump to the specific question you’re interested in. Let’s get started! Let’s start with the basics. The Navigo Easy pass is a rechargeable card for occasional travelers. It works like an electronic wallet where you can load metro tickets, bus tickets, airport tickets and day passes. It’s perfect if you’re staying just a few days and don’t need unlimited travel. Navigo Easy is non-nominative, so it can be loaned or transferred. It costs 2€ On the other hand, the Navigo Découverte is only holding passes – daily, weekly or monthly … that allows unlimited travel over the Paris region, except for the airports on the day pass. It’s ideal if you’re in Paris for a full week and plan to take a lot of transport. This card is personalized, which means you need a photo to use it, and it’s non-transferable. It costs 5€ You can purchase Navigo Easy Passes at metro and RER station ticket counters or from ticket machines, such as these. You’ve got the old machines, with the rollers… … and the newer, touchscreen machines. If you don’t have a Navigo Easy card yet, touch on “You don’t have a Navigo Pass”. Then, select “Tickets” And choose if you want metro-train or bus-tram tickets. This tells you that you are going to purchase one or many Navigo Easy cards to load your tickets on. And, here, you can choose to purchase up to 5 Navigo Easy cards, full fare, or reduced fare for kids aged 4 to 9. Let’s purchase one full fare card! Now, you have to choose how many tickets you want to load on your Navigo Easy card. I’ll purchase 2 tickets. As you can see, I can use a credit card, bank notes or coins. Just wait for a few seconds And there you have it, your Navigo Easy card loaded with two metro tickets! The Navigo Découverte is not available at machines—you need to buy it in person at a ticket counter, for 5€. You’ll find these counters in most metro stations, and at the airports too! Here at Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport, at the RER station between terminals 2 D and F Here is what you will get for 5€. You have 3 elements: a plastic container, the Navigo Découverte card and the client identification part. Let me show you how to put your photo and name on it. First, you need a photo of you.
i’ll show you in the next chapter how to easily get one at metro and RER stations. Peel off the protective paper And adjust your ID photo on the sticky zone. Now you have to write your Name and Surname Separate the paper part from the plastic cover, and stick it on the second paper part where your name and photo are. And finally, you can assemble the 3 elements together. So, where can I get the required photo for my Navigo Découverte card? The easiest way to get one is at a Point Services or a Photomaton, like this one at CDG airport, which are photo booths found at most metro stations. What a great mug shot! So, what are the costs incurred? As we’ve seen, the Navigo Easy card itself costs 2€, and you can then load it with tickets that cover all zones: metro/RER/train tickets at 2.50€, bus/tram tickets at 2.00€. Then, you can also load on the Easy card airport tickets at 13.00€. And finally, Navigo Day tickets that enable unlimited travel in the Paris region, at the exception of airports, for a whole day! The Navigo Découverte card costs 5€, and the weekly pass is 31€60, giving you unlimited travel throughout the region, including airports. It is valid from Monday to Sunday but does not cover a rolling 7-day period. You can purchase it starting from the Friday before the week begins until Thursday of that same week. We’ve already seen how to purchase a Navigo Easy or a Navigo Découverte card. Now let’s see how we can upload new tickets or passes on these cards. You can do it on the white and blue machines we’ve seen before, but you can also do it on the purple Navigo machines like this one. Place your Navigo card on the purple container. Here, I will upload a Weekly Pass on my New Navigo Découverte card Press buy And then choose between a Day, a weekly or a monthly travel pass. Press on zones 1 and then 5 to get the best Value for Money solution covering the whole Paris region. And now, you just have to pay, using your credit card. Here’s a question I often get: can two or more people share the same Navigo card or phone app? The answer is: No!
Each traveler must have their own pass. Even if a Navigo Easy, Navigo Découverte, or a phone with the IDF Mobilités app has multiple tickets, … only one person can use it at a time. A Navigo Easy card is anonymous, so you can share it or pass it one to someone else, but you can’t use two tickets from it at the same time. Navigo Découverte and a phone app are strictly personal and can’t be used by someone else. So, which tickets or pass on which card? On a Navigo Découverte you can only have two passes of each category: day, weekly or monthly. For example, you can have at the same time a pass for week n and a pass for week n+1, but not for n+2, then. But, and this is really a pain, it can’t contain at the same time a metro-Train-RER ticket and a Paris Region <> Airports ticket And it’s also the same if you have an old Navigo Easy card with some remaining unused t+ tickets. You won’t be able to purchase new metro-train-RER tickets before all the old t+ tickets have been used. Finally, it can also contain up to 2 Paris Visite Passes and 2 Navigo Day Passes So, how can I use the different Navigo cards to get to the airports of Roissy Charles de Gaulle and Orly? On your Navigo Easy, you can load either a RoissyBus ticket to Charles de Gaulle airport, … or a Paris Region to airports ticket using either the RER B to Roissy or the metro line 14 to Orly. Just remember that a Day Pass on a Navigo Easy card enables you to get anywhere in the region, at the exception of these two airports! For information, since the beginning of March 2025, the OrlyBus service to Orly airport has been discontinued. Finally, you can also use the Paris Region to Airports ticket to reach Orly with the RER B and the Orlyval automatic transport system. The weekly pass on a Navigo Découverte card enables unlimited travel to and from the airports, via all transport modes, except the Orlyval. Here also, a Day Pass on a Navigo Découverte does not enable you to get to the airports! How do I reach the Palace or Versailles or Disneyland Paris, and at what cost? You can reach the Palace of Versailles using the RER C to Versailles Château Rive Gauche, … and Disneyland using the RER A to Marne la Vallée Chessy. You can reach Versailles or Disneyland with just one metro-train-RER ticket at 2,50€! Of course if you have a Navigo Day or Navigo Weekly pass, these two destinations are included. Paper tickets are no longer sold since January 1, 2025, but if travelers still have old ones, they can use them until December 31, 2025. After that, only digital tickets on Navigo solutions will be accepted. And that’s it! I hope this answers all your questions about the Navigo Easy and Navigo Découverte passes. If you found this helpful, give this video a like, and let me know in the comments if you still have any doubts! This is a very helpful video. Question though: We have a long layover (9am-8pm) in CDG and plan to go around Paris for maybe 4-5 hours. Not our first time and we are good with using the metro. Is the Paris Visite 1 day pass a good idea? And am I right to assume I cannot add that to my old navigo easy card (2023) that still contains 1 t+ ticket? Thank you 😊
This is a great video!! Question.. I am traveling with 2 minors (5 and 9).. do they need their own card?
The entrance to the underground metro stations are very confusing. To get your Navigo card, you might have to figure out which metro entrance to use. If someone can help identify this, it will be great.
VERY helpful video! I especially liked the fact that you showed using the vending machines!
My family and I are visiting Paris soon. We'll be there 4 days and 3 nights, so I was planning on getting each of us a Navigo Easy Pass and loading each one with 2 Day Passes. After the first two days, reloading them with another 2 day passes using the IDF Mobilities app or a kiosk.
Two questions. I have about 10 paper tickets left over from previous Paris trips. I know they’re good until the end of 2025 and I will easily use them up, but I’ve also noticed that some stations no longer have the kiosks that accept paper tickets like Palis Royale station. What do I do then? How do I get through the turnstile? Also when I eventually get a Navigo and I load nine trips on it, is there a way to check your balance on the card to see how many trips I have left? Also, I noticed at 8:50 of your video, when I comes to adding trips the three options are Day Pass, Monthly pass and weekly pass……..no single trips. How do you add just another batch of nine trips? Finally, if you have unused single trips on your Navigo, how long is the validity? May paper tickets were good for years😂. Thanks for your excellent vid.
Should I buy a Navigo Easy to top-up with my phone or should I just use the IDF Mobilites app with tickets directly on it? I'd buy the Navigo card only to have as memory from Paris
In the video you charged your navigo easy card with a credit card at the machine can you also use cash?
What is size of photo that I put on the card? Can I bring one with me?
Bonjour, we arrive in Paris on a Thursday and would like to buy a weekly pass . Can we use it Thursday through Wednesday of the following week? Merci.
Terrific video, thank you!
VERY helpful! Thanks!
Hello! Do you remember what exactly should be the size of the photo for the Navigo Decouverte?
It was perfect. Thank you
Thank u so muchh for the detailed explanation! i was soo confused with the public transport in Paris and how the Navigo card works but now thanks to your video i could understand ☺️
Just find out I can buy Vavigo pass ( day or up to 5 day) on my iPhone. It’s awesome for Canadian traveler.
Did they eliminate the zoning of the RER trains?
Do you need 2 separate Navigo Easy cards if i want Metro & Bus?
I did a lot of research and the best explanation and answers I saw are here. Thank you very much…
First off, thanks a ton for such a great video!
I have a question. Checked my NavigoEasy card that I bought in Paris in 2023 and found 4 t+ tickets. If I understand information given in a video in a correct way, I can still use those till 31 Dec, 2025. But what zones are covered by this tickets?
We did this but it gave us individual paper tickets only, worker their said not possible get card. Paper tickets work fine though.
Hello, which app should I use to purchase the Navigo weekly pass? IDF Mobilites or Bounjour RATP? Thank you
How to make a system as complicated as possible. Especially Decouverte only starting on Monday. Why not a rolling 7 days? It could be easily computerized but we love rules.
Hi, thanks for the informative video. I have one more question, though. Do I need the plastic card for the weekly ticket, or can I use the app without one?
this video is very good and the explanation ist understandable , thank you !
No need for this anymore. iOS iPhone users can just need to use Apple wallet and hit the plus button and select navigo and pay direct with iPhone. Navigo is stored on iPhone to tap to use Paris metro with tons of options and can skip this non sense.
If I want to buy weekly pass, can I just buy it online using their app without the fuss of having to take pictures?
Hi! At 10:48 there's shown what can be on the navigo easy pass, does it mean that it can contain all of those things simultaneously and after they're used they can be charged again or it's the maximum amount then you have to make a new one? Thanks!
11) the Einsteins who designed the system completely forgot one important use case. They have provided the facility to put a forward and a return trip on the card however if you do that it will block you adding any other trips until you use the return trip. That means that if you, at the airport, put on a return trip back to the airport you will then have to buy another card to use for all the other trips in Paris.
Excellent Explanation. Thanks a lot.
Is it possible to travel to Paris Center from the Charles de gulle Airport with the Navigo Pass on the same day of buying the weekly navigo pass from the airport?
I selected “English” language but halfway, the kiosk machine turned to French instructions! Smh! It Can’t even tell how much balance left in that card ! As tourist it really gave us a tough time. Pls make your system easy and understandable
We will be in Paris for about 3 days, which would be best to get, the Navigo Day Pass or the Paris Visite Pass? We will also need transportation to and from CDG of course.
So much 1990’s
So if I travel with kids which have no phone I have to purchase at least a Navigo Easy Card for each?
This is excellent, easy to follow, and well-thought out. Thank you for the help you provided! 🙂
Thank you for the video. I have a question about Navigo Weekly pass. We will be at Paris on a Friday afternoon. As far as I understand we will need both navlgo daily pass (for Friday Saturday and sunday) and also weekly pass since the weekly pass will not cover Friday sat and Sunday. Am I right?
It's good that the paper tickets aren't sold any more.
I can't tell you how many times I bought a carnet of 10 at the manned booth and been given 9 tickets.
Way too complicated. I got one navigo card with 4 rides for me and my daughter. We asked the guy at booth for assistance and he scanned the card and said go. We went and apparently we needed one card per person so we got the 70 euro fine. They ambushed us at the train exit for Notrre Damm. They didn’t care for an explanation all they wanted was the money
So with navigo easy, if i use metro from Disneyland to Nation and then use a bus for my final station, i have to have two tickets in my navigo easy?
Can you help me with what's the best option to buy a ticket? I will be staying at a hotel by the airport, and I'm only going to see the Eiffel Tower because of time. What is the best way to buy tickets? On city mappers it says take RER B and M 6? Is it best to get the Paris Visite travel pass that covers all the RER and metros but also airport tickets?
非常有用👍👍👍
