Berliner Fernsehturm
At 368 meters, the Berlin TV Tower, located on Alexanderplatz, is an iconic landmark of the city. Inaugurated in 1969, the TV Tower was a central symbol of the GDR and marked the beginning of a new era of communication and architecture in East Berlin.
Rotes Rathaus
In 1970, Berlin’s Red City Hall was a central symbol of East Berlin, the capital of the GDR. After its destruction during World War II, it was rebuilt identically between 1951 and 1956 and served as the seat of the East Berlin Magistrate, the socialist city government. The name “Red City Hall” not only referred to its distinctive red bricks but was also used as a metaphor for the communist administration.
Ministerium für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten – MfAA (Aumi)
The MfAA was responsible for implementing the GDR’s foreign policy, concluding international treaties and managing the diplomatic service.
