The origins of the Church of Saint-Eustache date back to the early 13th century.
A chapel dedicated to Saint Agnes was the first building constructed.
A crypt bearing that name still adjoins the church on the eastern side.
This chapel, built next to the Coquillière Gate and the Montmartre Gate (on the Philippe-Auguste wall), is said to have been the gift of a Parisian bourgeois, Jean Alais, who had it built in gratitude for the right King Philippe Auguste had granted him to levy a penny on every basket of fish arriving at Les Halles.
In 1223, Sainte-Agnès was established as a parish and took the name Saint-Eustache. The most likely reason for the new name is the transfer of a relic of the martyr Saint Eustache to the new church, a relic previously held by the Abbey of Saint-Denis. The church was remodeled and enlarged several times as the neighborhood’s population grew.
In the 14th century, King Philip VI retained his royal protection, particularly for the Madeleine confraternities that held mass there. Just before his death, in August 1483, Louis XI confirmed it by letters patent[2].
