Italy’s Most Underrated City: NAPLES! 🇮🇹
We took the train from Rome to Naples not knowing what to expect. Naples can get a bad reputation. People say it’s dirty, dangerous, and not worth visiting. We wanted to see if this stereotype was true, or if Naples has more to offer under the surface. Come along as we walk through the streets of Naples, eat delicious local food, and take in the architecture of this lively city. If you’re new to the channel, we’re team Erica Alex, a married couple traveling the world. We’re spending the next two months in Italy. Subscribe to follow along for upcoming adventures. Now let’s see if Naples was worth the visit. We first walked around the city of Naples, and now we’re walking around the city of Naples. We first walked around the historic center, and the streets were covered in blue and white with flags, streamers, and murals celebrating Naples’ recent Serie A victory. Our first stop was getting pizza and spritz, and we were blown away by how good the pizza was. Spaccanapoli is a street that slices Naples in two. Its name literally means Naples splitter. This narrow, chaotic street follows the exact path of an ancient Greek road from over 2,000 years ago, later expanded by the Romans. Today it’s lined with baroque churches, crumbling palaces, and tiny cafes. Happy birthday! We’re here at Pizzeria Da Michele, the most famous pizzeria in Naples, and we just ordered some margarita and marinara to try to see if it is up to the hype. This pizza is bigger than the wheel in my car. Cut into this. It looks insane. Super thin. You know, what you want to do is you want to roll it, roll it in so that the juice, everything kind of stays in there. That is incredible. Very different. It doesn’t have that crunchy crust. It’s kind of this light, chewy, but also got kind of a blistered, charcoal, wood-fired flavor. And the tomatoes are like the best tomatoes you ever have. The basil is also the best basil. And the best garlic, and the best olive oil. Tomatoes are super fresh. And there’s a lot of herbs on this one. Very herb-y. I think pizza is ruined for me now. This is a source of truth. This is a source of truth. This is where it took all the tastes like now. Variations all around the world, but nothing is like this anymore. Pizza originated from Naples. You have the San Marzano tomatoes that grow right off the slopes from Mount Vesuvius. Incredible. I think we can do a third pizza. We now have a third pizza. Crazy people. This one’s the cosacca, and it’s got pecorino cheese on it. So the sheep’s cheese. This pizza is, I think, even bigger than the last two. But my eyes are not bigger than my stomach. It’s perfect slice here. And we’re going to fold it in, tie it onto it. So far, we’ve managed to not spill this on my shirt. Let’s see. Mmm. I love the pecorino romano. It’s delicious. That’s nice. Actually, not too heavy. I thought it would be more cheesey. But it’s a nice little bit more bite on the cheese. Wow. All right. We timed that perfectly. We just got straight in. Super easy. You come? Come at 11. We came at 11.20. Or, like, just at the cusp, I think. Because if you come at noon, you’re going to be met with this. And then it just gets worse as the day progresses. I highly recommend. If you’re ever in Naples, Napoli, you’ve got to come. You’ve got to come have at least one pizza. At pizzeria da Michele. Here in Napoli, it’s very dense. The buildings are all very tightly packed. But it’s still beautiful. You have clothes hanging from, you know, the balconies and people just hanging out and walking around. But it is a tighter feel. Napoli is known for its lemons. So this is a lemon dessert. And it’s made of Madagascar cream. And it’s fully vegan, this one. So decadent. And the lemon is so nice and strong. Mmm. And it has some lemon curd in the middle there. Mmm. That is fantastic. In the heart of Naples stands the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, the city’s most important church, and a powerful symbol of Neapolitan faith. Built in the 13th century, this cathedral blends Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance styles, a reflection of the city’s layered history. but its most sacred treasure lies inside the Chapel of San Giorano. San Giorano is Naples patron saint, and every year crowds gather here, hoping for a miracle, the liquidification of his dried blood. If it liquefies, it’s seen as a blessing for the city. We got to join with the free tours that take place each hour until 5pm. All right, we have a Sfogliatelle, a traditional Neapolitan pastry. Let’s see. Mmm. Mmm. It’s got ricotta and lemon zest. Mmm. Delicious. Mmm. It’s beautiful. Super flaky. Mmm. Wow. Oh my God. That’s really good. It has the same filling as this. It’s almost more like a cakey outer container instead of this nice light pastry. It’s more of like a cake. Mmm. Delicious. Mmm. Wow. The lemons here are famous. The lemons here are grown locally and there’s lemon in everything here. Mmm. The state of Naples is a desired spot. The city state here, the Greeks, Spanish, everyone wanted it. Behind that massive cruise ship is a volcano. Look at that. Mmm. Mmm. It’s a castle. Another castle. It’s golden hour over the Mediterranean here. Oh my God. Yeah, that’s right. The sun is just kissing my face. He’s sun kissed on your birthday. Sun kissed. He’s sun kissed. This is just a little island here and there’s all these restaurants and little hotels. Yeah, there’s not that much space but it’s a whole little town. Heading to dinner. Italy just keeps getting better and better. Like a finely aged wine. Just like you. Finely aged. It’s a scampi. Scampi. Look at that. Scampi over here. Mmm. Alright, we gotta try one of these little things. I’ve never had a scampi before. There you go. Let’s eat the head. I’ll just go for it. Mmm. Mmm. Oh, wow. Mmm, it’s perfectly cooked. Okay, this next scampi has been properly cracked here. Perfect little scampi popsicle. Or food. Mmm. It’s not fishy at all. It’s actually better than… Okay, I’ve actually been a crab lover but I think that might be better. I think it has a little bit more of a flavor. Sometimes crab is a little just too neutral. That is sweet and still has a little bit of that shrimpy juiciness but not as crunchy. It’s softer. And then let’s give another try of the pasta here. Got some fresh parsley. Mmm. Perfectly al dente. Freshest tomatoes. Freshest parsley. Nice olive oil. Nice white wine. This doesn’t get better than that. You don’t need anything more because everything individually is so amazing that when it all comes together, it’s just this beautiful marriage of tomato and seafood and perfectly al dente linguine pasta. Like, this is all I want for my birthday every year. It’s all I want. It’s irreplaceable. Got linguine clams. My mom would actually make linguine and clams. And I remember loving it because of the flavor of the seafood and the flavor of the parsley. You can’t get better than that. It’s just so hearty, so calming, so, in my opinion, homey. It just feels like home. This is the traditional Napoli baba, or the rum pastry thingy. Let’s see. Nice little cakey. Wow. I actually prefer that to tiramisu. Wow. I mean, this is very different, but it’s kind of fruity. It’s light and fluffy, and then there’s this nice, rummy syrup that just kind of perfumes the whole thing. We have some traditional Napoli pastries. We’ve got a crunchy Sfogliatelle, and we’ve got a soft Sfogliatelle. And this one, I’m not sure what it is. This is almond. Yeah, it’s just kind of… Look at that. Nice bounce to it. Oh, that’s even better than yesterday. The orange just perfumes the whole thing. And the ricotta. It’s so nice. It’s not too sweet. It’s just perfectly flavored. Okay, now let’s try the traditional Sfogliatelle, the crispy one. Yeah, it just looks so beautiful. Yeah, look at this. It’s still warm. I’ll just break into it. Yeah, look at this. The dough is so crispy and flaky. I’m not feeling… Yeah, ricotta and orange. It’s amazing. And a little cafe. Beautiful. Nice, sweet and bitter combo. Sfogliatelle. We’re in Christmas Alley here in Napoli. After a couple days in Naples, we can say that this city is absolutely worth visiting. It’s raw, real and full of life. From the birthplace of pizza to the architecture, Naples is full of beauty. Next up, we’re hitting the road for a month-long road trip around southern Italy. Make sure to subscribe to come along for the ride. We’re about to start our month-long road trip in Italy, and we’re about to pick up our rental car on the way from Naples. The ending place will be in Bari, and I’m excited. A nice southern Italy road trip. Okay, Alex, ready? Ready.
