The $1.5 Billion Mall That Says Everything About Thailand | ICONSIAM Documentary

they spent over $1.5 billion to build this place not a palace not an airport a mall one of the most expensive in Southeast [Music] Asia and the question is why why would a country known for temples street food and spiritual simplicity build something this massive this [Music] extravagant this wasn’t my first visit to Iconum i’ve been here several times over the years [Music] so right now it’s about 4:30 in the afternoon uh to be honest I don’t want to engage in any water fights today but this time I didn’t come to shop i came to understand because after all these years I still couldn’t wrap my head around it a mall that you take a boat to that’s already a statement but beyond the glass the brands and the grandeur what does this place really represent iconium opened in 2018 built along the Chao Pria River and one of the most sacred waterways in Thailand the River of Kings that wasn’t a design choice that was a declaration over 525,000 square m of space more than 500 stores global luxury local craftsmanship even a traditional floating market inside the mall it’s a part luxury destination part cultural museum and part spiritual monument all disguised as a shopping center this isn’t just a shopping complex it’s a national statement thailand didn’t just build a mall they built a message we are modern we are proud but we haven’t forgotten who we are and it’s brilliant because in most places mos are dying but here I can see I’m reinvented what a mall could be now let me show you my favorite spot in this entire place arabica coffee i mean if Apple designed a coffee shop this would be it [Music] minimalist white marble big glass every angle is [Music] aesthetic the lare smooth light layered you don’t just sip it you experience it this isn’t just a cafe it’s an Instagram magnet it’s a quiet flex the kind of place that whispers luxury rather than shouts it and again this is inside a [Music] mall now if you’re a Starbucks person this is next level [Music] iconium has the largest Starbucks reserves in Southeast Asia it spans over two floors there’s wood steel leather the river views that make you sit a little longer they serve coffee you won’t find in your usual Starbucks they have specialty blends siphon brews cold brews or age in whiskey barrels and so much more to be honest it’s not a coffee run here it’s a whole [Music] [Applause] event moving on we have the Apple store but not just any Apple this one is a floating glass box with 180° views of Bangkok from the inside you feel like you’re hovering over the Chao Prayer River it’s iconic it’s designed for tourists creators and locals all together in one place and honestly it’s hard to walk in and not feel [Music] something coming from Zimbabwe where moles are functional and not flashy this hits differently back home mos are for groceries maybe data bundles maybe a haircut luxury isn’t even in the conversation and it feels distant like it belongs to someone else but I seem I seem says we have arrived it redefineses what progress looks like not just surviving but thriving what makes this place really stand out is that it’s not just a place to buy things it’s a lifestyle center we have events concerts river cruises that start and end right here there’s always something happening like right now it’s Sran and here they have a 7-day Sran celebration here people are having like picnics eating sitting down which is quite nice they have a splash zone and a nonplash zone which is okay for us you also find local fashion shows art exhibits tech launches even cultural ceremonies happening in the open halls it’s a life it’s Bangkok but in high definition [Music] and maybe that’s why this works because we don’t go to places like this for what they sell we go for how they make us feel inspired impressed and curious a place like this shows what a country can build when it believes in its own story and when you walk through Iconium you are not just seeing shops you’re seeing Thailand being ambitious strategic and proud and deeply spiritual which is rare to find since it opened Icon has pulled millions to the side of the river it shifted the gravity of Bangkok people used to stay downtown around Sukumid areas but now they cross the river for this we have new hotels popping up nearby the job market grew infrastructure evolved and that’s what Iconium did and that’s not just the architecture that’s the impact [Music] like I said this wasn’t my first time but it’s the first time I actually saw it not just the lights not just the escalators or the logos but what it means every country has a way it wants the world to see it and this this right here this is how Thailand chose to speak loud elegant and strategic this is the kind of place you take a boat to not just to spend money but to understand ambition if you’re new to my channel my name is Gigi and I’m from Zimbabwe i’ve been living in Thailand for the past 6 years i work here as a teacher and this channel is where 1. Gigi, seriously, that is the best description for this gorgeous mall! You have captured the essence and the purpose of it. Thank you! 💕

I didn't visit it yet and I hope to do it in August, but from the hundred videos I've watched about it, yours is by far the best! After what you described here, I am certain that when I visit IcomSiam I will feel like home! ❤️
