Explore Split Croatia
We are spending our day in Split, Croatia. So, we’re staying in the area, but we’re actually staying further um to the north in Castellari, which is a lovely area, which is a little bit more speed, a little quieter. Um, as you can see, it’s quite busy here right now. We’re right at the ferry port, which is also the bus terminal. So, there’s a lot going on here. But, we’re headed to Dialesian’s Palace, and we’ll show you how to spend an afternoon in sled. On our way to the palace, uh, right before you get to the corner where it is is this giant marketplace. There are swimsuits galore, dresses everywhere. It’s taking us forever to walk through. I want to buy every linen out there. So, we keep stopping. The kids are a little snack. There’s a giant fruit market nearby, so you could definitely spend a decent amount of time. And if there’s anything you forgot or your bags got lost in flights, so be an inexpensive place to get everything you need. One of the best ways to experience any culture is your tongue. We really like to find sweets and food that we aren’t necessarily familiar with. So today we have stopped in to this little shop. They have these little pistachio things next to the baklava. It doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen before. And then um they have all of these they’re called locom. I’ve never heard of that before. Uh sounds like it’s maybe starch and sugar. So we’re going to check it out. And anyway, we’re super excited to try something new. Dad change. Thank you. Okay. What did you get? Um I got Melody 2, which is pistachio. Taste it. something else. I don’t think it absolutely sugar. Have a try. What do you think? [Music] I don’t know. Cox. Oh, the aftertaste. Is it everything you wanted? The aftertaste tastes kind of like frost. This tastes kind of like strawberry. It tastes like the after taste. after. I like it. It’s like to this raspberry one that we got. It’s not overly sweet, which I like. It’s like a taste texture, but then it has it has some kind of like a flassy tap. No, fruit by the foot textured wrap around it with the raspberry flavor, but not overly sugar. I really like that. That’s not bad at all. Anyway, the market continues. So, we went out and around towards the park and you can cut back through. This market is absolutely enormous. And then the palace is directly across here. Once you get inside the walls here, there are things like there’s there’s walking tours you can do in the mornings. There’s free or paid ones. There are um museums here that show you like the history of of Split, which has been through quite a lot. So originally the ecclesian’s palace was built for the Roman Emperor Deacles as his retirement home. Then later was taken over by the Venetians after the fall of Rome. It was taken over by the Parisians at some point. It was occupied during World War II by England. No, by Germany and Italy. So they really got double whammy there. Then it was part of Yugoslavia and then the Republic of Croatia. It’s just ventures, but it is honestly held pretty beautiful. Look at this. [Music] There’s some work going on. [Music] You’re a big Game of Thrones fan. There is a Game of Thrones tour through Croatia. Um there’s also here in the occlations palace a lovely um store with a bunch of souvenirs or Game of Thrones. That’s nice. [Music] Okay. Do you guys remember when we were in Morocco and went to Kisses for and got tea that one time? That’s right. [Music] So, we came in kind of a sideways route, but this is the official main entrance to the palace. They have some guys dressed up like Roman guards, which is fun. Really beautiful little square. And then over here is a gorgeous statue. [Music] and the watchtowwer. So, we got here around what? Noonish. 11. So, we got here about 11, 11:30. And the heat in July can be oppressive. Now, within the city, like this, it’s actually quite nice. Some nice breezes, some beautiful little views through the alleyways. It’s really fantastic. But when you’re out in the city, you may want to get a head start. Probably also save you. We spent a ridiculous amount of time in traffic. Um, but that would probably save you that as well. [Music] We have stopped. First of all, can we admire my outfit? I landed at 2 in the morning. Like, we just look so good. We are at Oh, sorry. We’re at this place. I don’t know how to pronounce it. Is that what it is? Pinocchio. Oh, yeah. Picasso Picasso. And look how pretty this is. Like, are you kidding? Oh, adorbs. We’re going to get They left us with the phone. That’s what you get. This sea. Like, I just want to buy this for my house. I thought you said I want to bite. Smells amazing. Like, if you could smell it, you you would you would be so hungry. I think we might have found the pizza version of our favorite sandwich in Italy. It has a pesto, no, a pistachio cream on it. I’m pretty excited for it. Does everything look good? I think they’re a little hungry. Now that we’ve finished our lunch, we are going to head to the Temple of Jupiter, also known as Apollo. That’s where you have been reading some books that have a lot of Roman and Greek gods and so the kids are excited despite the look on their face. Started reading them with them cuz I don’t have any reading materials. So we’re all a little excited. Now the sad thing is it has been turned into a baptistory. So it is missing some of the charm of the Roman and Greek influence but that’s okay. Throughout the city in Split, there are actually 12 of these um sphinx that were brought in from Egypt and placed around the city. So, it’s kind of fun. We’ll play a little game, try to look for them. Might be a little interesting, but we just wanted to see the doors to the temple here. Um it is kind of awesome that they have it just built right in the center of everything. Um and now is a crypt and back to street. [Music] reminds me of that one city in Italy. So, the reason why this reminds you so much of Italy is we’re right across across the water and the Venetians that built Venice actually occupied this area as well. Some of the buildings are going to be Roman and then you’re going to see right next to it, you’ll see the Venetian style. So, we’ll show you see that a little bit here in the square. Absolutely beautiful as you come out the gates. That building is so cool. [Music] [Music] So, we finished what was on the to-do list for Split, but we wanted to take a little walk, see what else there is. It looks like there’s a fish market that usually sets open here. cleaned up for the afternoon. The buildings are fantastic and so every time we see a color or something we want to see, we just follow that. It’s a pretty good way to explore a town and you go from old town to a lot of roads like and we’re just this close to the water. What do you guys think of this area? Beautiful. It’s a beautiful There’s that Venetian influence. Yeah. Just so you know, we went to the restaurant. We asked for tap water, which you do in a lot of countries. We’re in a very heavy tourist area. And he said, “Oh, yeah. We can’t do that today because the water’s bad. It’s it’s dirty and gross.” Which, like, if we were like naive tourists would be like, “Oh, shoot.” But Split has one of the most robust city water systems. The water is clean from the tap. They do provide free water places. Good luck finding a toilet. But you can’t find water. It’s annoying because we just ended up ordering nothing. But they do that sometimes so that thirsty tourists can find just buy bottles of water. But don’t be afraid of the water here. It is impeccably clean and split. Croatia has amazing tasting drinking water. Highly recommend. I believe it’s it was rated as the cleanest of all. I know the swimming water was is there drinking water, too? So stay well hydrated. Don’t burn up out here. Also, there’s no free bathrooms here at all. So maybe don’t stay too hydrated. That’s what I said. Good luck. That’s where it is worth it. If you find a coffee shop or something with a bathroom, buy a drink, use the toilet. Better than paying for a toilet just for the toilet, right? For one, it’s what they charge. Yeah. The public rooms are a euro when you This little like area is definitely like you’re going to have some high tourists, high cost. Just like any country. Just like any country, you have big cities that are going to be a lot more expensive. And the further south you go in Croatia, the more expensive. But also too, like a lot of like younger people come here and they’ll like party. They’ll go to the clubs and stuff at night and then leave the city in the day to go explore. And so if you’re like us, it may not be the best place to stay. I’m very very happy with where we’re staying that was the drive-in today was a disaster, but normally probably not too bad. But it’s far enough out. It’s quiet. It’s beautiful. And then we could just come here for a day. After winding at our whim based on what we saw that was cute, we decided we’ll walk back to the car by way of the water out to this beautiful view there. Looks like there’s a little train that takes you on a tour. This is that beautiful square that we came in on the other side. You can see the cruise ship in the distance. The fairies are here and there are tuk tucks, all kinds of things helping you get around. interesting that we did find in the zone here um walking up to the old town. I’ll show you is not to go walking through here in your bikini or shirtless. Glad that’s not what we’re doing today. No public urinations, which should go without saying, but when there’s not a lot of options. So yesterday when we were in Trovier from our tour actually had just come off the boat and I was totally walking around town just my bikini. So I’ll have to look up. Hopefully it’s not a thing everywhere but the area here of the palace was taken over by the Catholic Church. So maybe has something to do with that as well. But it definitely has a higher end because we’re not all just hanging out in our beach. [Music] Hope we’ve intrigued you enough that you’ll come see Split for yourself.
