Paphos Old Town Market Walkabout
Hi, this is Dominic from Pathos Life. And today I’m at the old town in Pathos next to uh one of Gain Cat Lady’s feeding stations. She’s not due here till midday, which is a couple of hours from now. I’m actually here to feed uh to film the market and show you off its uh new roof. It’s been there a few weeks now, and I did do a film of it once before, but the sound got all corrupted, so I’m here doing it again. Such is my dedication to my craft. There’s the mosque. It’s nonfunctional since uh 74, I guess, but they do still look after it, which is nice of them. Get off the road. I’ve just come from uh probably my favorite car park in Oldtown in terms of when I need to park the car. I don’t have pet favorites otherwise uh because uh it’s not used so much. So there’s always a space there basically cuz there’s a from there you have to walk about an extra 50 yards to get to the shops and that deters most people. So, this is the ring road that goes around uh the old town. It’s one way. The only time it wasn’t one way was when they were doing renovations back in the 2017. And this was the only road you could use. So, we had traffic lights and horrendous cues. We’re crossing over here. They are still doing some renovations. You can see here, poke our head in. Some of the old mirrors are there still, but that’s all going to be tarted up, no doubt. And this is one of the uh cementgraphy pieces that they have around Oldtown that tells the story of Aruda Fusner, which is a criate folk tale. I think it shows the queen killing uh Audafla. Someone’s got a knife in their hand definitely. And this is one of them entrances to the market. Per crispy. It’s on the right. Now, fortunately, uh the anamorphic lens I’m using works okay with lower light, so this should still look pretty good. Now, it is uh only midm mornings. Uh so, the market won’t be that busy. If you come here around lunchtime, there’ll be a lot more people around, but that’s good for filming purposes, though. Not sure what these things are. Play toys for your dog. There’s a chap on YouTube who uses things like that to make music with. He’s also a very good pianist. Not a combination you normally expect to hear together. Here’s the main water feature here. So, answering a few questions. Does the roof shade you? Yes. Apparently, by the way, behind this green screen here was going to be a boutique hotel. I was told after my blog article on the indoor market or covered market. Uh, what’s the next question? Is it nice and cool here? Yes, it is pretty good. There’s no fans around anywhere. So, I presume that’s all just down to the shade itself. Going to walk down here first of all trying to avoid filming uh phallic objects. It’s quite difficult considering how religious the country is. It’s surprising. Now, there’s a bit of uh building work going on through in there. Not sure what that is. Get some sponges here. And all the uh stalls you see out on the walkway, they are associated with the shops. So, you can go in there for more stuff. a handsome chap. Now that goes just back out into old town. Now down here, if you look up, [Music] there are lots of lovely crocheted items. Let’s go up a bit higher. [Music] Sorry. It’s all right. [Music] [Music] Now, I won’t go left here just yet cuz I’m going to go right and come back out through this archway here just in front of me. So, we’ll go this way. And it’s not just uh standard tourist stuff you can get here. You can get all sorts of leather goods, lace goods, [Music] kitchen towels. I could do some of them. I lace shop. It definitely is a lot cooler in here than it is just a couple of yards away out in the sun. Don’t know why I’m saying yards still. So, that takes you back toward towards the mosque. I’m going to go down this little alley here. This will be to bring me out to the front of the uh market. Nice smell of food around here. I’ll go in there in a minute. I’m just going to show you the outer side first cuz it is really very pretty. And from here you get lovely views of the coast. And the official main entrance to the market is just over there. And there’s trying to work out the name of it. Mommy Momo Asian Kitchen Bar up there. So, we’ll go into the official entrance. I think the camera up a bit better. Back into the cool. And this is the indoor cupboard market area. That’s what we just walked past out there. There’s lots more stores here. selling all sorts of clothing and fashion accessories. So, you get the idea of that. Now we’re coming back to where those dangling crochet things were, at which point we’ll be turning right as you’ve already been left. Now that’s pretty much it for the market. [Music] I’ll show you the green living wall cuz that’s had a bit of kiss of life to it. And that looks pretty cool. [Music] Yes, cuz a few weeks ago, this is looking a bit sorry for itself, but uh rather like this cat over here, but it was rejuvenated and now looks properly like a green living wall again. So, if you come out here, you’ve got uh the route back to the car park that way. You’ll come to a square and you turn left and you’re then by the mosque. Here, though, is a tourist information center. People are often asking where that is. There’s your answer. Right by the green living wall. And they’re open Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 4:00 p.m. And if you go along that road there and cross the road, it’ll take you all the way up to Kennedy Square through lots of shops. Now, this way there’s a I think it’s a it’s called Rum and Jam. It’s a cafe stroke bar. And I’m trying to focus on uh another of the cementtography pieces. on the wall up here. This is the one when the queen’s getting really annoyed at Aruda Fusa. I think there about eight of these in total around Papos old town. I did do an article and a film showing you them all. I’ll take links to them so you can hear the full story. Right, I’m going to walk down to uh Cafe Nero, I think, cuz that’s a good place to finish. It’ll also give you more of an idea as to where I was, cuz it’s easy for me just to wander around these streets. But I remember when I first started filming and walking about here, I was always getting lost. This Italian place looks very nice. And opposite Cafe Nero is a very nice artisan coffee house. And I think I’ll do another film on the way back. But because of the issues with cameras overheating, I’m going to try uh using the 360 and doing one that I can then pan round and also I won’t have to worry about the light issues so much. So that should be quite interesting. Check pass. I’m not going to do it on the big pole 3 m above me though. I’ve had enough of that for the time being. So there’s the artisan coffee shop, which is well worth considering if you want something different. This lovely orange building is the old uh post office. And this road here goes down to uh the road that leads to Kings Avenue Mall and uh the harbor. Basically, there’s also a Marks and Spencers outlet there if you want your Percy Pig uh if you want to satisfy your Percy Pig cravings. So, this is the C cafe on the viewpoint. It’s very nice here. There is a water feature here, but it looks like it turned the water off at the moment. Understandable given the current water crisis cuz there’s the girl without the sparrows. She used to have lots of sparrows, but they kept getting stolen unfortunately. I’ll finish with a nice view, the seafood area. Okay, thanks for watching. Cheers. [Music]
In today’s film we are exploring the newly recovered market in Old Town. We will check out how effective the roof is in fighting off the all-powerful sun. We will also see how the Green Living Wall is getting on. We finish by walking to the viewpoint next to Caffe Nero.
