MONTE GORDO BACKSTREETS – Where Is Everyone? (Algarve Walking Tour)
Hello there. It’s 8th of July. It’s 2:30 p.m. and I’m stood outside the Vasa De Gama Hotel in Monte Gordo and thought let’s have a little walk around and check some restaurants out. So, come on guys. Come and join me. So, there’s the hotel Vasa de Gama. I think it’s one of the first hotels to be built in Montego. Now, it’s not the best days in the Algav today. It’s about 25°, very, very overcast. Nice breeze. I don’t mind it living here, but obviously if you come on holiday, you went a little bit warmer than this. I don’t know how busy it’s going to be with the weather being a little bit offish. First bar we come to. Fantasy. It’s just Oh, there’s ice cream cakes. Does do sangria. Who would like that? And we’ve got Mo’s bar. It’s a British bar just down here. Let’s check it out. Doesn’t look like there’s many people in there. Got a bike hire shop here. Yeah, only a couple in. Not many in at all. Does Sunday lunch. It’s got football on. Ladies football on on Wednesday. There’s your traditional English fugi Yorkshire puddings. Well, I’m not used to this in July, guys. Bloody hell. Come fully equipped with me hat and sunglasses. Don’t really need any of them. Right. The Guinness bar is closed. And Narato’s Restaurante Pizzeria Salmonos. Dada 1550. Rabbalo 15. Excellent value for money. And next door we got a tapas bar a rode mariscu. It’s a seafood rice. The octopus. No prices on that guys. Opens from 11:00 in the day till 11:00 in the evening. Oh wow. And the beach is just across the road there. Got the Forsa Portuguese sport shop. There’s one in every town in the Algav. Tukans, the Irish bar that was closed last time. There’s only a couple in there. There’s live music. on a Wednesday. It’s pretty quiet today. I did just come down some of the back streets and the the further away from the front you are, the the more busy the restaurants looked. William, I think this is a either a Dutch or German restaurant. It’s normally always fairly busy. Smoothies, ice cream, cocktails, and beer. Burger, sushi, and tapas. That’s a nice combination. It’s quite busy in there actually. Caravilla store selling souvenirs, hats and bags for the ladies. See what restaurants are down here. Fos Alantida. It’s the the restaurant to the hotel. Alant quite a few people in there. There’s your seafood rice. Monk fish. This looks a nice restaurant. Depa does takeaways. What cuisine is it? A pizzeria. There’s loads of Italians over here. You got a little square with the souvenir shops. Little snack bar here. Don’t can’t get the name of it. Jadim the garden. We got a couple of little gypsy stalls out on the square. It’s even got a spa here. I’ll cut down the back streets. Never actually been down this one before, so I’m not too familiar with the uh back streets in Montego. I know the beach quite well and all the restaurants on there, but these are like more traditional Portuguese restaurants. What we got here? Just got your typical soups, grilled meat and fish. Beef steaks €21. Lamb chops 16, spare ribs 18. They do curries, they do chowine. So little bit Chineseey that one. They do sangria as well also. They do set menus, tourist menus. Oh, that’s excellent. That so you get a starter, a main dessert, coffee, glass of wine or beer, all for $1,550. Good value for money. So just over the road here we come to the pedestrianized bit. Still people in shorts and t-shirts though. Yeah. Not all the restaurants are open. I thought it was going to be really really busy today. We left it as late as July to check it out in the summer. Delucas pizza on pasta. Loads more souvenir shops. That looks like a nice restaurant. Plenty of pe people in it. Poor soul. restaurant car. You okay? So, yeah. Let’s see what the prices are here. The menu executive $16.90 for a three course meal, half a chicken. Oh, you get araju. So, that’s a black bean rice, salmon, drink, coffee. All for $16.90. Good value for money. Moamba. Twoerson cataplana €40. That’s a bargain. Yeah. quite busy restaurant that I just pop along to the Thai restaurant. There’s only a couple in here at the moment, but got some good reviews on this one, the Royal Thai, unfortunately. Not many people in it today. We’ll pop back to the main square. Yeah. Sabora automico. That’s very quiet. You okay? Kako, that’s the snails, cocktails, sangria, kipinas, pina, mojitas, gins, and more. There’s quite a few people in there. the sports bar there that’s closed. Got more souvenir shops and then as we get back to the main road we should come across a few more restaurants. Chicken 450 pizza 650 can off takeaway. You okay? Cherries de Montordo. It’s the first time I’ve seen that open actually. So they do the grilled meats. Let’s check it out. Chicken gear style polo. That is costilas iberica. So that’s Ian pork ribs. Smells really nice. There’s a few people in there. Well, the plates and half look different and there’s no sun. Still constructing hotels right on the front at this time of year. Now, there used to be a nice Chinese along here. I don’t know if it’s still open. Don’t even know if it’s still here. Let’s go and check it out. We need a snack bar cafeteria. That’s closed. Well, I thought everywhere would be open now with it being so close to the summer season. There’s the Chinese. Oh, there’s a few people in there. There’s good reviews on that one. Basin Bar and Restaurant. So, they do the meat, they do fish. Check the prices out. Salmon 1350. Dada 1250. What’s really happening in Monte Gordo this summer? In this Algarve walking tour, we take you through the backstreets of Monte Gordo, starting at the historic Hotel Vasco da Gama, one of the very first hotels built in the area. It’s July — peak holiday season — but something’s missing…

📍 The streets are nearly empty, restaurants are quiet, and even the bars feel still. Where is everyone?
We begin our tour at Moby’s Bar, a traditional English-style pub, and stroll past local favourites like Moratto’s Pizzaria, Eddy’s Tapas Bar, and Toucan’s Irish Bar. Alongside these, we spot sushi, tapas, and burger joints — some open, some closed, likely due to the grey, overcast weather.
As we walk deeper into Monte Gordo’s quieter streets, we pass Hotel Atlântida, Jardim Snack Bar, souvenir shops, and the local Spar supermarket. Several Portuguese restaurants along the pedestrianised street still offer full menus with starter, main, dessert, and drink — all for under €13.50.
We head toward Muambo Bar, Mil Sabores, and past the well-known but shuttered O Jaime’s, ending our tour near Jopel, a busy fish restaurant, and Tal Orchard. Along the final stretch, we pass Churrasqueira Monte Gordo, BaSun Bar, O Docinho, and the children’s play area — still mostly deserted.
Is this just a quiet day, or a new trend in summer tourism?

First comment & thanks Ste 🙂
I didn't realise that there were so many eateries in Monte Gordo as it seems like a sleepy seaside village!
I did notice that Toucan's had a Union Flag 🇬🇧 on it's board with no sign of an Irish flag 🇮🇪, so tut tut to them; it could undo the Good Friday Agreement lol! 🤣
I've only another vlog left to edit from the Azores before my series arrives in Algarve by the way.
Have a great week my friend & regards to the lovely Sue 🤗
a-tlan-ti-da …lol.
