Is the Tokyo Subway Ticket worth it? (Watch this before buying)
if you’re going to Tokyo and you’re doing your research you might have come across the Tokyo subway ticket on social media I have seen many videos about this ticket but I feel like there is little to no discussion on how to actually use it efficiently So based on my own experience using the ticket I want to give you as much detail as possible so that you can make a well-informed decision before buying one in this video we will go through what the ticket covers where to purchase it how to collect and use the ticket and most importantly how to maximize usage so that you can get the most bang for your bug okay let’s start with coverage the Tokyo subway ticket gives you unlimited rights on the Subways for either 2448 or 72 hours the subway system is run by two operators Tokyo Metro and toi Subway you will see these logos at the subway station entrances along with the symbols for the subway lines in Tokyo the subway line symbols are dut shaped with an alphabet in the center representing the initial for the subway line in this example you can see that Asaka station is on the Ginza line by Tokyo Metro and the Asaka line by toi Subway within the train station you will also see the subway line symbols on signage giving you directions to the correct ticket gate and platform to board your train apart from the Subways you will also see Jr lines which includes the famous yamanote line the Jr lines are not covered by the ticket since they are not part of the subway system but you have nothing to worry about because it is the subway system that provides the most extensive coverage of central Tokyo it goes to places not covered by the Jon lines like Asaka roii jimoo and it also covers all the famous places like Shibuya Harajuku Shinjuku AK and the list goes on if you’re staying in Tokyo for more than 3 days I highly recommend the 72-hour ticket because it has the highest cost performance at only 500 yen per day let’s also compare using a Sia versus the 72-hour ticket a single Journey with a Sia will start at 178 Yen and will cost more for longer distances and more Journeys with the Tokio Subway ticket you can already save money by taking the Subway at least three times a day and with longer distances and more Journeys you’re going to save even more I will explain how you can take more Journeys when we look at how to maximize ticket usage you might be thinking if I have the Tokyo subway ticket do I still need AA the answer is yes you do because during your trip there are moments you will still need to use other trains for example the subway does not cover Narita or haneda airport you will need a Sika to use the Jr trains or private Railways to get to Central Tokyo you will you will also need a Sika after your ticket expires there are several ways you can buy the Tokyo subway ticket but for me I love using cluke because it’s super convenient you can order it in advance and simply collect it when you arrive in Japan after payment you will receive a QR code which is used for collecting your ticket I have a link to the product page and also a discount code that can save you money on all your clo purchases by using the link and discount code you can help support the channel so I can keep making helpful Japan videos just like this one when you arrive in Japan go to a Tokyo Metro or toi subway station there are two methods to collect your ticket either from the ticket office or using the ticket machine with a QR code scanner let me show you how to use the ticket machine once you’re at the train station look out for the ticket machine with this sign you can choose from multiple languages but of course we’re going to select English select QR code and then scan the QR code on your voucher confirm your tickets and select issue ticket wait for the machine to print out your tickets and that’s it it’s that easy when you’re taking the subway simply insert your ticket into the ticket gate and please don’t forget to retrieve it it’s important to note that your ticket will not activate until your first use this lets you choose when you want to start using it in other words your ticket will only only start counting down after you insert the ticket into the ticket gate for the first time also the ticket expiry date and time only applies to entering the station so if the ticket expires during your Subway Journey you can leave the station with no issue if you have any questions so far please let me know in the comments or you can send me a DM on Instagram which I have Linked In the description below While most people finish the discussion here I will be sharing ing how to actually maximize your ticket usage based on what I’ve seen online I can pinpoint a few mistakes people make when using the ticket not staying near the subway station if your accommodation is far away from the subway station you will be walking very long distances or taking trains that are not covered which defeats the purpose of buying a discount ticket I recommend checking the address on Google Maps before booking your stay so that you can see how far you are from the state I recommend a walking distance of less than 5 minutes for convenience however if it’s more than 8 minutes it can be quite exhausting not planning your itinerary carefully you should be prioritizing places that are accessible via Subway so that you don’t have to take other trains and spend unnecessary money you might be asking but how am I going to visit places that are not covered by the subway let me give you an example on how you can plan your itinerary once you have a list of all the places you want to visit identify the places that are accessible via Subway group them together and arrange them into a 3-day itinerary and then use the 72-hour ticket to visit all those places so that you can get the most savings for the rest of your trip you can use other trains to visit places not covered by the subway this plan lets you visit all the places you want while also saving on transport skipping the night life in your itinerary after dinner most Travelers would call it a day but since you have unlimited Subway rides why not make the most of it you can use the subway to visit places with amazing night life such as the Shibuya and Shinjuku area many restaurants and bars are open till very late and you can enjoy supper and feel the energy of Tokyo at night which is amazing this is how you can get more rides from your ticket which makes it even more worth B lastly here are some extra tips that can further maximize your ticket use apart from Subway rides this ticket also gives you discounts at over 350 attractions around Tokyo simply show your ticket for extra savings all these attractions can be reached by the Subways which further maximizes your ticket use you can find the list of attractions in the description below it’s also good to note the date and time of your ticket expiration for example even though the 72-hour ticket ticket equates to 3 days of travel usage can be extended to the fourth day depending on the time of activation if you activated your 72-hour ticket at 11:00 a.m. you can still use the ticket until the 4th day 11:00 a.m. also when you plan your routes I highly recommend the Japan travel app you can filter the routes based on the Discount Ticket you’re using select Tokyo subway ticket and you can easily find a route that is fully covered by the ticket if if you found this video helpful please give it a like And subscribe for more Japan content if you have any questions please reach out to me
