Hello and welcome back to Run and Explore, where we bring you the world’s most incredible running destinations, one run at a time. Today, we’re taking you on an epic journey to one of Germany’s most dramatic and historically significant landmarks, Hendia Fortress. The fortress is located right here in Badver near Ravel, my hometown. And this isn’t just going to be a hike. It’s going to be a climb through over a thousand years of turbulent history perched at top a rugged peak of an extinct volcano. Today we’re going to the Hen V, which is a fort and it’s going to be beautiful. It’s going to be a lot of uphill, so it’s kind of going to be a hike, but it’s going to be amazing. Rising majestically from the landscape, this isn’t just any hill. It’s the remnant of an ancient volcano. This geological marvel was recognized for its strategic advantage even in Roman times, long before the first medieval stones were laid. We’ve just parked our car right here at the base where you buy your tickets. Our adventure begins with a pretty steep climb right here from the parking lot. This winding path through Lush Greeni quickly gets the heart rate up, building the anticipation for what lies within these formidable walls. You can feel the history in this approach knowing countless feet from soldiers and prisoners to dukes and common folks have ascended this very path. This isn’t just a castle. It was widely renown as one of the most impregnable fortresses in the Holy Roman Empire. Its history stretches back to the early medieval period, evolving from a simple ducal residence to a massive strategically vital stronghold of the Dukes of Rutenburg, who continuously expanded and strengthened its defense over centuries. As we near the top of this first ascent, you see the fortress’s initial gates appearing. This is where we’ll scan our tickets to finally step inside the historic grounds. All right. So, so I made it up the first part and now there’s the entrance. So, I’m going to use the cart to get in and check out everything that goes on in here. Now, prepare yourself because the path gets much steeper again inside of these initial walls. Every step is a visceral reminder of how incredibly difficult it would have been for any attacking army to breach these strongholds. As we push onward and upward, you can already feel the layers of history etched into the very stone. Each block a testament of different eras of construction and conflict. Huvville famously withstood no fewer than 15 sieges during its active life. Most notably during the devastating 30 years wars of the 17th century under the legendary command of Conrad Vidud. It became an enduring symbol of defiance against imperial forces never once conquered by force earning its reputation as the never conquered fortress. Super steep. Super steep. Uh-huh. Super steep, but also super beautiful. Taking a break with some beautiful views of the countryside around and these are the ruins. We’re still not all the way up top, but we came from far. And this is what we’re looking at as to elevation. I will let you guys know. I’m not getting any closer to this. And we have arrived on top almost. But this is so beautiful. It’s like where medieval times cool things happened. Or maybe not. I don’t know. We’ll learn about it. But super beautiful and green and it’s a perfect day to do this. We’re now deep within the heart of Huva. And as you can see, there are ruins everywhere you look. While it’s hard to identify every specific building that once stood. Whether it was barracks, a prison, a massive kitchen, a stable, a workshop, or elaborate living quarters for the noble families, the sheer scale and layout of these remains tell a powerful story. You can trace the outline of massive defensive walls that once housed hundreds. Picture Grand Hall’s Rook Courts convened and imagine the bustling self-sufficient life that once filled these courtyards. This was a massive miniature city on a mountain able to sustain itself during long sieges. Now, for a true highlight of our exploration, we’re going to climb up the old church tower. This structure would have served not only as a vital place of worship for the fortress inhabitants, but also critically as an important lookout point and a bell tower to signal warnings. The climb is tight, but completely worth the reward at the top. Just look at this panorama. From up here, you can truly appreciate why Hornville was so strategically important for controlling the entire region. We have breathtaking unobstructed views stretching across the fertile Haw region over the glittering expanse of Lake Constantming in the distance. And on a clear day, you can see the majestic peaks of the Swiss Alps far beyond. This immense vantage point allowed for the fortress’s defenders to spot enemies approaching from miles away, control vital trade routes, and project power across the landscape, making it virtually unassalable. What an incredible journey through time and elevation. Hiking up the Hendville Fortress isn’t about the physical challenge. It’s about connecting with centuries of turbulent German history, feeling the echoes of countless lives lived within these stone walls. From its ancient volcanic origins to its reputation as a cunningly designed, unconquered stronghold that famously defied empires, yet ultimately even the mightiest fortress succumbed to the relentless march of time. Henville truly embodies the resilience and countless stories of the past. If you’ve never been in this fascinating region of Germany, Kentville is an absolute must visit for any history buff, hiker, or run and explore enthusiast. That’s pretty much it. We’re going to run back down and maybe check out some more sites, but that wraps up this video. Going downhill, always the best. We love running downhill. Makes up for all the time we lost climbing up this crazy crazy mountain. For relatively short hike of about 2 mi, we gained an impressive 600 ft, which is roughly 183 m of ascent.
