Вюрцбург – секретна перлина Баварії | Würzburg – Bavaria’s secret pearl

You will probably think: “Some Germany again, castles, beer.” And I will say: “Yes, yes, … no” Because, we are in the city of Würzburg. And you know what? This city is simply a real surprise. Here, history just explodes from every corner, the architecture makes you open your mouth, and the wine… we’ll talk about the wine later, because it’s special here. Wait, why Würzburg? Why not Munich, Berlin or Cologne? What is so special about a city where only 130,000 people live? And why wine and not beer in the heart of Bavaria? To understand this, we need to immerse ourselves in history. In 1945, Würzburg was destroyed by 90%. Imagine: thousands of years of history – palaces, cathedrals, houses – all turned into ashes overnight. But Würzburg was rebuilt. They did it as if nothing had happened. As? And why? Let’s figure it out! Let’s start with the main “Wow!” of this city – Würzburg Residence. And it’s not just a palace, it’s a statement. The statement that the local prince-bishops in the 18th century had a lot of money and, as we can see, no less ambitions. Designed by the legendary Balthazar Neumann, this Residence is a textbook example of Baroque. Every corner, every curve, every statue screams: “I am luxury! I am majesty!” And, by the way, this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not just like that, but for merit. And now about the main star – Grand Staircase. It’s not just a staircase, it’s a theater. And the main actor here is the fresco by Giovanni Tiepolo. This is the largest ceiling mural in the world! Its area is 677 square meters! For comparison, the area of the ceiling frescoes of the Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo in Rome is 549 square meters. Imagine how he drew it? My neck probably hurt more than one day. And there is also a mirror cabinet. Apparently, prince-bishops spent hours admiring themselves here. And, of course, Hofgarten. gardens And, of course, Hofgarten. gardens This is a work of art. Here you can walk for hours, take selfies, meditate, or just imagine yourself as some baroque aristocrat walking through this park. On one side the Residence, on the other Marienberg fortress! And between them – the river Main and the bridge. Here is this bridge. It is a bridge for breakfasts, parties, kisses and, of course, a place to drink wine. The Old Main Bridge was built back in the 15th century, and it is one of the oldest stone bridges in Germany. And the statues of saints appeared on it only in the 18th century. That is, first there was a bridge, then wine, and then the saints to bless it all. And now let’s go up to this fortress. Friends, this is the cradle of Würzburg. It was here, on this hill, that the Celts founded their settlement. Just imagine seeing these walls in 1000 years! From under the walls of this fortress there is an incredible view of the city and the river Main . There is a deep well within the walls of this fortress. Imagine, its depth is 100 meters! A true engineering feat. But here is what is interesting: Würzburg was the center of the principality, where bishops ruled like kings. They built palaces, drank wine and even forbade brewing, because they considered wine cooler. In Bavaria? Yes, it’s real! Undoubtedly, this craft is practiced today in Würzburg. There are hundreds of beers in Würzburg, and each brewery is like a small museum. Beer was brewed here as early as the 11th century. When in Europe they just started building castles! Now is the time to talk about what makes Würzburg truly unique. – about Franconian wine in Boksbeutel bottles. Look at that bottle! This design move is centuries old. The form of Boxbeutel was officially fixed for Franconian wines as early as the 18th century. They say that this shape was convenient for traveling, because the bottle did not roll and it was easier to pack. And today, the shape of the Boxbeutel bottles is officially protected within the European Union. And apart from Germany, it is allowed to be used for bottling some wines only in Italy, Greece and Portugal. Mainly white grape varieties are grown here: Silvaner, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau. And they are simply incredible here. Würzburg is the only city in Germany with a state-owned winery. It is located right under the Residence! Can you imagine how much wine there is? This is simply heaven for oenophiles! (block on the word “enofilv”). I said: “enophiles – lovers and connoisseurs of wine. Well, we have already seen the main sights of the city, tried the wine. But Würzburg is not only the Residence and the fortress. It is a city that hides a lot of curiosities, if you know where to look. Here, for example, is the Cathedral of St. Kilian. It is the fourth largest Romanesque cathedral in Germany. The prince-bishops of Würzburg are buried in this cathedral. And It was also almost completely destroyed during the war. And in the market square there is a chapel of Marienkapell. She is so bright, red and white. This is a symbol of Würzburg’s stability. It was also destroyed, but was rebuilt. In general, to see the city just needs to stroll through the streets. Go to the market, see how the local live. They are very friendly here, love their city. Residents of Würzburg love their city. And I’m them I understand. There is everything here: history, nature, wine, beer, and … the feeling you are at home. Even if you came here for the first time. Würzburg is not just a story. It is a living city. There are 25,000 students in Würzburg, and they set the rhythm. Just imagine every fifth inhabitant is a student! It makes Würzburg young, energetic, alive. And now – a surprise! In 1895 here, in Würtzburg, Wilhelm X -ray Opened X -rays. Yes, the same by which we see bones in the pictures! And you know what? For this he received the First Nobel Prize in Physics. That’s right. A small city, and changed medicine forever! Würzburg is a city that does not try to be something that it is not. It just is. With his history, his wine, his people. It is a city where science and art live together. Baroque palaces next to modern office buildings and laboratories where discoveries are made. All this, friends, is what makes Würzburg so special. Maybe it’s not as advertised as Berlin, but it certainly deserves your attention. See you next time!
