Welcome aboard the shortest passenger railway in Britain — and possibly all of Europe!
This is the Stourbridge Town branch line, also known as the Stourbridge Shuttle — a charming and ultra-efficient railway route connecting Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town, covering a distance of just 0.8 miles (1.3 km) in under 3 minutes.
But don’t let its size fool you… this tiny track is packed with innovation, history, and personality.
In this video, we take you behind the scenes of one of the UK’s most fascinating rail journeys — from its Victorian origins in 1879 to its modern-day green tech transformation.
🔧 The Shuttle is powered by the Class 139 Parry People Mover — a small railcar that uses a flywheel energy system, storing braking energy and releasing it during acceleration. It’s ultra-lightweight, low emission, and a real example of sustainable urban transport done right.
✅ Why it’s amazing:
Shortest operational branch line in Britain AND Europe
Over 100 services run daily with a journey time of under 3 minutes
The Class 139 uses regenerative braking and has a top speed of 20 mph
Since its upgrade in 2009, it’s moved millions of passengers efficiently and sustainably
🎥 Whether you’re a trainspotter, a tech fan, or just love quirky UK travel, the Stourbridge Shuttle is a ride worth watching.
📍 Located in the West Midlands, this service is a vital link for locals — and a hidden gem for visitors who love micro-travel experiences.

the subtitles are completely different from what you're saying. is this recycled footage?
It’s apparently going to be took over by West Midlands metro when it expands to stowerbridge
Its a shame this channel became an AI machine. Used to make very high quality voiceovers
Seen this before; Geoff Marshall and his now ex- Vicky Pipe did a feature about this shuttle during their "All The Stations" project back in 2018/19
