The Incredible Attractions at Universal Studios Japan

for a theme park that is a little over two decades old Universal Studios Japan just outside the center of Osaka has quickly earned a reputation for being one of Universal’s best for much of its early years it was a time machine transporting you back to the days of classic Universal attractions such as Back to the Future Terminator Jaws Backdraft and Spider-Man however in recent years it seems like this park has decided to go in a different direction and these once classic attractions are quickly being replaced by the likes of more modern franchises such as Nintendo minions and Harry Potter this must be working though because this theme park is the third busiest in the world with the park in this state of flux there’s no better time to explore what remains of the classic lineup and perhaps what you can expect in the future so with that let’s explore Osaka’s Universal Studios Japan entering Universal Studios Japan you are quickly thrust into the park entrance land of Hollywood a lot of which is contained under a roof giving you some reprieve from any rain or sun that might hit during your stay using the name of Hollywood as a loose framing device this land contains some iconic La locations as well as some big cream show buildings containing a variety of rides and attractions The Impossible ride to miss in this area is actually a two for one with Hollywood dream the ride wrapping around the entire land and even over the park entrance area this roller coaster lets you choose between both forward and backward facing trains that provide completely unique experiences once on board you can select between several songs that will blast out of the onboard individual ized speaker system this coaster is simply fun not featuring any inversions but just a ton of airtime moments punctuated nicely by whatever rocking track you choose to listen to this land also contains a second coaster space fantasy the ride a spinning indoor roller coaster that sees you hurling through space but it’s often closed for temporary overlays and you have about as much chance of writing the originals version as you do of hitting the lottery But be sure to check out whatever version is offered on your visit as they’re often unique VR coasters based on popular franchises and if you think review time is a popular franchise be sure to subscribe and check out our patreon we’re finally on the home stretch for hitting 100,000 subscribers the Hollywood area is absolutely packed with entertainment and experiences the biggest show of them all has to be the universal monsters live rock and roll show this Parks version of beetle Juice’s graveyard review on stage beetle juu is joined by Dracula The Wolf Man Frankenstein and his bride who all sing the most iconic mix of 70s 80s and ’90s music you’ve ever heard you haven’t seen true theme park entertainment till you’ve seen Dracula burst through the the roof of a theater to sing living levita Loca by Ricky Martin now keep in mind that Beetle Juice narrates entirely in Japanese but the other performers strangely speak and sing in English this attraction can feel like a fever dream but it’s certainly worth checking out on your visit the second show in the area that also features live singers is sing on tour a show that cleverly mixes performers animatronics and a whole lot of super impressive technology another unique show offering is playing with Curious George a show for the family that integrates a live performer with an animated Curious George causing Havoc this attraction also features some interactive play areas and experiences that are great for the little ones Hollywood is also home to the parks 4D theater called Cinema 4D which is often changing up shows with the permanent offerings officially being Sesame Street 4D magic and Shrek 4D Adventure though these haven’t played consistently for years as it’s often the place to see temporary anime entrance land of Hollywood is also the entrance to most of the flex space areas of the park where special events are held such as scare mazes for Halloween and temporary stages for other events Universal Studios Japan consistently offers impressive temporary attractions so it’s always worth while checking out what’s available on the time of your visit moving past Hollywood you may not even realize you step foot into the Park’s next Land New York currently there are no permanent attractions in this area due to the recent closure of Spider-Man and Terminator 23d Terminator has been replaced by a temporary Detective Conan 4D live show entitled Jewel Under The Starry Sky but this is apparently a stop Gap solution before a more permanent replacement is found this is the first a few areas in the park that feel relatively Barren due to attraction closures hopefully in the next few years these lands will come to life again with new offerings and rumors are pointing to the fact that they will definitely be worth a visit if you’re curious about the future and rumors of Universal Studios theme parks Alicia Stella over at theme park stop is a perfect source to keep up to date with now this land also features a large stage that is used in a variety of ways through throughout the year such as the Pokémon jumping Halloween party and the Super Mario PowerUp summer again Universal Studios Japan is constantly swapping these things in and out past New York you next come across a land that actually has some rides in it minion Park this area is bright fun and Larger than Life letting you step into the Despicable Me film franchise the major draw for this area is Despicable Me Minion Mayhem the motion simulator rides soon to be found at every Universal resort around the world interestingly here it took over Back to the Future the ride and utilizes that same ride system once getting through the abundance of pre-shows legitimately there are almost 20 minutes of them you get to experience what it’s like to become a minion yourself as you were hit by the minion gun created by Dr nefario it’s a sweet little family attraction catering more to the young at heart just be aware it does see some absolutely insane wait times the area also contains a small flat ride called Freeze race sliders where you can slip and slide around with the minions unfortunately this land doesn’t contain any stage shows or entertainment but there are always plenty of minions out and about to meet and greet often dressed in special costumes connecting to to any events the park is running do watch this land though as a new attraction will be joining the lineup soonish set to replace Backdraft which was originally next door in the San Francisco land which legitimately currently has two restaurants and nothing else so walking through that area we enter Jurassic Park while Jurassic Park the ride has been indefinitely close since September of 2023 next year it’s set to finally come back online looking better than ever this attraction is the same experience that you can find are the universal theme parks where your leisurely boat ride through Jurassic Park is rudely interrupted by some metalsome man eating dinosaurs and in the end you eventually plunge down a large drop and get absolutely soaked the other ride in the land and one that actually is currently open is the flying d dinosaur coaster aboard this flying coaster an outof control pterodon will grab you and fling you through the sky to simulate the sensation of flight be warned this ride is intense but gives you an incredibly unique Overlook of the entire park branching off from Jurassic Park is a little corner containing a waterw world land with the one and only thing within it is unsurprisingly the Water World stun show while this show may be at almost every Universal Park that doesn’t change the fact I have to see it every time I get the chance this is easily one of the best theme park shows in the world with a scope and scale that will leave you completely in awe you will sit with your jaw a gape as you admire the cunning stunts giant set pieces and so many Fireballs even Pitbull is jealous just be aware that the splash zones may as well be called soak zones as you will leave them absolutely saturated heading back out from water world and taking a left you’ll be greeted by a rather lengthy walkway that serves as the entrance to the original Super Nintendo World while the area is relatively small and its layout makes you feel like you’re constantly on top of other guests it’s packed with Incredible detail and immersive theming the Fe draw card for this area is Mario Kart Cooper’s challenge an impressively unique dark ride that brings iconic Mario Kart courses to life through large practical sets and augmented reality headsets this is not a fast ride like many might expect but it is fastpaced to a point that it can be genuinely overwhelming on your first experience the ride brings in gameplay in a scoring system to make it infinitely reable as immediately after finishing the ride you want another go to try and improve upon your score the secondary attraction in the area is Yoshi’s Adventure a slow moving ride that takes you up and above the land aboard your own Yoshi for a unique overhead view this attraction is relatively simplistic but has enough figures and Views to keep your attention high for It’s relatively short ride time since our visit the park has also opened the Donkey Kong Country area of the land which features a brand new coaster experience entitled Minecart Madness this coaster is a first of its kind and simulates you kening around a runaway mine cart even jumping across broken tracks just be warned that being the newest ride in the park this thing will see some insane wait times for the foreseeable future this land also has plenty of opportunities to meet some of the most iconic Nintendo characters including toad Mario Luigi and now Donkey Kong spread throughout there are also many PowerUp band interactives and challenges though these do require upcharge wristbands so whether or not you can do this depends on how much you’re willing to spend heading out of Nintendo back down the lengthy pathway You Next Step foot into one of the original single IP lands with only one attraction Amity this land is a recreation of the fictional island located off the coast of New England that serves as a location for the Jaws film in AMD you can grab a bite to eat try your luck at some carnival games and experience the one ride in the land the number one attraction of the park for many theme park history fans may very well be Jaws well it first opened at Universal Studios Florida that version has since closed to make way for Diagon Alley making Japan the sole surviving Jaws ride aboard you are taking a guided Scenic tour of the actual locations around Amity where the shark attacks happened in 1974 a series of attacks made famous in a popular Hollywood movie in true Universal fashion though things go wrong and your Scenic T quickly becomes a highth thrill attempt to escape from the clutches of a man eating shark this ride is packed with special effects fire and giant animatronics and is a hearken back to the classic days of Universal Studios rides where you truly got to ride the movies exiting Amity and heading down another deceptively long pathway you find yourself in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter while this may be the same Hogs me you can find in various Parks worldwide this doesn’t make the land any less impressive towering over the land is the or inspiring Hogwarts Castle containing Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey a thrilling Dark Ride where you get to explore Hogwarts and its grounds all whilst trying to avoid a who’s who of Harry Potter spooky sights while this ride may be all over the world it’s still a don’t miss experience as one of the most technologically advanced attra actions of all time with arguably the most impressive and immersive cue of any theme park ride out there the other ride in the land isn’t as impressive and is a simple family coaster entitled Flight of the hippogriff after passing a fullscale buck beak animatronic you spiral and dive around the pumpkin patch before swooping past Hagrid’s Hut The Wizarding World is also packed with a variety of other offerings to keep you entertained olivander’s Wand Shop let you experience the moment of the wand choosing the wizard before you were ushered out to buy the one that chose you if you do buy one of these ones there are plenty of interactive spell locations around the land that you can activate by casting a certain spell there’s also a stage in the area that has shows on it almost consistently you can hear the Frog choir sing see a tri wizard Spirit Rally or come face face to face with this absolutely horrifying hippogriff exiting Harry Potter and turning the corner you have the last and for a lot of people arguably the least exciting land Universal Wonderland a collection of three family friendly franchises crammed together here you can ride a variety of rides themed around Snoopy and Friends Hello Kitty and Sesame Street with the expected selection of kid focused rides there’s also an indoor area containing several experiences that can be great to relax in on a hot or rainy day and interestingly This indoor area is actually where the park used to perform a 30 minute reduced version of wicked and that is Universal Studios Japan a park that is currently in a bit of flux but still has more than enough on offer to ensure you will have a great day with time this park will only get better with the expected replacements for Backdraft and Spider-Man set to come online in the next few years let’s just hope they never get rid of Jaws but what are your thoughts on Universal Studios Japan if you haven’t been there do you want to go and if you have what did you think let 1. Haven't got to universal Beijing to their Hogsmeade, but the USJ have by far the best with the isolation keeping you in the world of HP. at Hollywood, you can see all over all place and in Orlando, you see JP and the lagoon. USJ isolates you into the Wizarding World the way the other two don't but again, I can't speak for Beijing.

  2. I was there it’s a verry Nice Area but it’s a shame that you have to wait in line for a very long time to enter something you want to do, which means you lose a lot of time.

  3. Im conflicted if I wanna go. I go to Japan often but don’t want to waste a day doing this out there cause most of their rides can be found in Hollywood and Florida.

  4. We visited last month with our 8 year old daughter. Lots of fun. However, THE ONE THING MOST YOUTUBERS WON'T SAY – Nintendo SuperWorld is absolute tourist trap – AVOID! 3 hours of waiting lines is not worth any ride in the world IMO. There are much better rides around the park.
