Silent Hiking in Écrins National Park for 12 days
In the summer of 2024, I set out to hike the GR54, a legendary 189 km circuit through the Écrins National Park in the French Alps. Over 12 days, I climbed a total of 12,680 meters, carrying everything I needed on my back and sleeping under the stars in some of the most beautiful and remote places I have ever been.
Starting in Le Bourg-d’Oisans, I followed the classic clockwise route through deep valleys, over high alpine passes, and past turquoise lakes, glacial rivers, wildflowers, and waterfalls. I bivouacked almost every night, finding quiet and scenic spots to pitch my tent, often with no one else around.
Along the way, I swam in icy mountain lakes, hiked over snowfields with microspikes, shared trails and meals with new friends, and even helped recover a lost backpack in the dark. I also took some scenic detours to places like Lac Noir, Lac de l’Eychauda, and Lac de la Muzelle, which were absolutely worth the effort.
This trail challenged me physically, surprised me constantly, and gave me countless moments of joy, awe, and connection. I hope this video gives you a feel for that experience and maybe even inspires you to go hike it yourself.
