Four interesting facts you may not have known about Bari’s historic center. In the heart of Bari Vecchia, there’s a place where time seems to have stood still, and the ancient culinary art of Puglia lives on every day: Arco Basso, or as it’s more commonly known, the “orecchiette alley.” Here, it’s not the shops that sell fresh pasta, but the women of Bari themselves. Sitting outside their homes, at tables or makeshift wooden stalls, with expert and quick hands, they transform semolina and water into thousands of perfect orecchiette, cavatelli, and strascinati. Not only can you buy freshly made pasta, but you can also observe the entire process, often accompanied by the women’s stories. The Basilica of San Nicola, a treasure trove of the patron saint’s relics, is undoubtedly the jewel of Bari Vecchia. But its importance goes far beyond the sacred: it is a living symbol of interreligious dialogue. Since its construction, which took place after the theft of the relics of Saint Nicholas of Myra in 1087, the Basilica has become a point of reference for pilgrims from around the world, particularly Orthodox believers. This church is one of the few places in the world where both Catholic and Orthodox Masses are regularly celebrated, testifying to a deeply rooted religious harmony and coexistence. The Norman-Swabian Castle of Bari was built as a Norman fortress in the 12th century. It was Frederick II of Swabia who transformed it into the imposing and refined residence we see today, adding architectural elements that enhanced its defensive and representative functions. But it was Isabella of Aragon, the “unhappy queen,” wife of Gian Galeazzo Sforza, forced to live in exile in the Castle of Bari from 1500 to 1524, who commissioned significant embellishments to the castle, transforming some of its parts into a more comfortable and refined residence. Strolling through the alleys of Bari Vecchia, it’s impossible not to notice the characteristic paving: the “chianche,” large limestone slabs. The curious thing is that many of these chianche weren’t laid simply for their beauty or durability. In ancient times, when buildings were demolished to make way for new construction or to recover material, the recovered stones were expertly reused for road paving. Quattro curiosità che forse non conoscevi sul centro storico di Bari.
Nel cuore di Bari Vecchia, c’è un luogo dove il tempo sembra essersi fermato, e l’antica arte culinaria pugliese rivive ogni giorno: l’Arco Basso, o come è più comunemente noto, il “vicolo delle orecchiette”. Qui, non sono i negozi a vendere la pasta fresca, ma le signore baresi stesse. Sedute fuori dalle loro case, sui tavolini o su improvvisati banchi di legno, con le mani esperte e veloci, trasformano la semola e l’acqua in migliaia di perfette orecchiette, cavatelli e strascinati. Non solo si può acquistare la pasta fresca appena fatta, ma è anche possibile osservare l’intero processo di lavorazione, spesso accompagnato dai racconti delle signore.
La Basilica di San Nicola, scrigno delle reliquie del santo patrono, è senza dubbio il gioiello di Bari Vecchia. Ma la sua importanza va ben oltre il sacro: è infatti un simbolo vivente di dialogo interreligioso. Fin dalla sua costruzione, avvenuta dopo il trafugamento delle reliquie di San Nicola da Myra nel 1087, la Basilica è diventata un punto di riferimento per i pellegrini di tutto il mondo, in particolare per i fedeli ortodossi. Questa chiesa è uno dei pochi luoghi al mondo dove si celebrano regolarmente messe secondo il rito cattolico e il rito ortodosso, testimoniando un’armonia e una convivenza religiosa che ha radici profonde.
il Castello Normanno-Svevo di Bari è nato come fortezza normanna nel XII secolo, fu Federico II di Svevia a trasformarlo nella poderosa e raffinata residenza che vediamo oggi, aggiungendo elementi architettonici che ne esaltavano la funzione difensiva e rappresentativa. Ma fu Isabella d’Aragona, la “regina infelice”, sposa di Gian Galeazzo Sforza, costretta a soggiornare in esilio nel Castello di Bari dal 1500 al 1524 che commissionò importanti lavori di abbellimento al castello, trasformando alcune sue parti in una residenza più confortevole e raffinata.
Passeggiando per i vicoli di Bari Vecchia, è impossibile non notare la pavimentazione caratteristica: le “chianche”, grandi lastre di pietra calcarea.La curiosità sta nel fatto che molte di queste chianche non sono state posate solo per la loro bellezza o resistenza. Anticamente, quando venivano demoliti edifici per fare spazio a nuove costruzioni o per recuperare materiale, le pietre recuperate venivano riutilizzate sapientemente per la pavimentazione stradale.
