Visite historique des forts d’Aussois et frissons sur le Pont du Diable, Vanoise, Alpes, France

Here we are in the commune of Aussois, on the edge of the Vanoise National Park, in Savoie, to visit two forts: the well-preserved Fort Victor Emmanuel and the ruined Fort Charles Felix. And between the two, we’ll discover the Devil’s Bridge. Well, the fort is in ruins after all. Fort Victor Emmanuel, built in the early 19th century by the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, could accommodate up to 1,500 men. These 10 buildings are constructed over a 100-meter drop, including the fort, the barracks, the chapel, and the penitentiary. And here is the powder magazine. The forts controlled the royal road to Mont Cenis between France and Piedmont. The 1860 treaty annexed Savoy to France. The agreement stipulated that Napoleon III must destroy all the strongholds. This is the penitentiary. Napoleon III partially kept his promise. He destroyed Fort Charles-Félix but left the others intact. A small view of Fort Charles Félix in ruins. The Dent Parrachée, 3697 m and here, almost half hidden in the clouds, is the Rateau d’Aussois, 3131 m. And so I’m going to be in this massif for the next 3 days. This is the chapel. There are paintings inside that show where the soldiers, prisoners, officers stood… They recreated a light show in a dark room of the fort, inspired by engravings found on rocks in the surrounding area. I leave the fort through what is actually its main entrance, via the drawbridge. Well, I’m going to the Devil’s Bridge. Well, after this cultural visit, we’re going to discover the Devil’s Gorge. Yes, indeed, it’s a beautiful, narrow gorge. Come on, let’s continue the descent. So this is called the Builders’ Path. I don’t know if this is where they brought the stones and everything up, in the 1800s, the year the fort was built. So, I arrive at the Devil’s Bridge. In fact, it’s really high up in the gorge. Come on, you know how I love taking the little suspension bridges, the footbridges. Well, let’s go. I love bridges and footbridges. Or there, the bridge moves with the wind. Devil’s Bridge, 1858 but renovated in 1991. Let’s be reassured. 1991, mind you, that’s quite a while ago. Impressive, the gorges are super deep. Well, I made several little crossings for fun and now I’m turning back. So, when the fort was in operation, there was a bistro in the little hamlet below. Well, there are some ruins here, it must have been active during the time of the forts. And the Dent Parrachée is in the clouds. This is the top and back of Fort Victor-Emmanuel. I got a little closer to the ruined Charles-Félix. And that’s how this little hike ends. Tomorrow, I’ll leave for 3 days immersed in the Vanoise.
