Is COSTCO Châteauneuf-du-Pape GOOD???
I got this Kirkland Signature Shat to Pop from Costco for $18.99, but it can’t be good, right? When it comes to the Kirkland Signature wines, some of them offer tremendous value for money and then some are, you know, hit and miss. I have three other GSMs here. I’m going to bag this Kirkland Shat to Pop up and I’m going to taste them all blind, see how it compares to other wines. I even have another Shat to Pop in the flight. For those of you that don’t know what shat to pop is although you probably do if you’ve clicked on this video it’s the name of a village in the south of France in the southern Rome new castle of the pope when the papacy moved to aon they built a new castle for the pope that’s why it’s called shot enough to pop enough to pop are GSMs which stands for ganache saram morvdra blends the most famous GSMs are coton also in the south of France also over in Spain there are tons of them priorat is one of the premium names premium appellations. Although they can be made all over Spain, wherever ganache is from, ganache is actually a Spanish grape. So maybe we should start calling it garnaca instead of ganache. Shatnov pop is a very interesting appellation in the south of France because you can blend white grapes into red wine and you can even make 100% varietal wine. Some of the best shats are 100% ganache. I’ve even seen 100% Morvvedra and Sarah in recent years. Costco is really smart as they find producers all over the world and then get them to bottle and put their own Kirkland signature label on. At first I thought this was a negotiant wine. I go to Shatnov to pop every few years to taste the new vintages. A few months ago when I was there, one of my producers who’s a good friend told me that close to half maybe even more than 50% of the wine bottled in Chattanoo to pop is negotiant wine. What happens is when a brand or a person goes, they look for good wines. They buy the finished wines, then they bottle it under their own name. So that’s what I thought this Kirkland signature was until I looked and I see it’s produced by Giam Ganet. I did some research, looked up some of it because I know shot enough to pop super well. I’ve never tasted his wines before. And that’s the thing in the world of wine. No matter how much you know, there’s always new producers, always new grapes, always new vintages know. It’s impossible to know everything about wine. Even the bigname critics like James Suckling for instance has a team of critics because if you really want to go in depth with wine you got to stick to a region or a certain countries because the world of wine is huge now. Anyways I see that Giam Gonet actually makes an affordable shat to pop that’s in the US that’s around 33 bucks which is unheard of. Usually these days shat to pops you’re going to spend 4050 bucks minimum. So I’m looking forward to seeing how a $18 bottle does. I got my Gabriel Glass Stand Art edition. I have a couple glass video comparisons coming up or for some reason I’ve kind of went back to the Gabriel glass standard. This is just a workhorse. Love this glass. I am super excited. Wine wine smells definitely a bit younger. The thing with these GSM wines, they can be approached young. That’s why Robert Parker loved these wines so much. Especially Shat to Pop. There’s so much richness. You can enjoy them young. I personally like to drink Shat to Pop on the younger side versus the older side. It smells like ganache. It’s got that baked strawberry, that kind of gar flavor, a touch of meat, like a little pepper, a little bit of eucalyptus even, which tips me off. Might be, you know, again, I know what these wines for were beforehand. I just Corin them. Had somebody mix them up for me. Ganache is a grape that the sugars can accumulate really quickly and it can be high in alcohol. That’s what producers have problems with it. I personally love this first wine because it’s more mediumbodied. Sometimes these GSMs can just get too bold, fat, rich. I actually That’s a really pretty wine. I like line wine number one a lot. Wine two has a touch of funk. I like it. I think that this is a shot enough to pop. Got a touch of funk. Meat. Uh baked strawberry raspberry. This is complex. I like it. Got a touch of funk and not too funky. Sometimes the shot of the pops can be pretty bready. Can have that horse settle that stinkiness. Some people hate it. I personally love it. This is a bigger wine. A little bit rich in tannins. You’re going to need some food with this wine. I think this is a shot enough to pop because I have two shot to pops here. The Kirkland Signature and another one. For some reason, I don’t know. I just it’s got this good shot enough to pops are so interesting because even though they’re big robust wines, they have this nice mineral hit to them. Those are big tannins. That’s a that’s a wine that’s going to need some time. This is fun. This is fun. Wine number three does It’s not as fruity. It’s more mineraly. It’s It’s more muted, so to speak. It’s not as big as explosive as the first two. Okay. What starts to come out here? Red raspberry licorice. It does have a touch of meat. It does have that roniness to it. It’s just not as not as powerful as the first two. This is good wine. It just doesn’t have the intensity that one or two have. Let’s But I have to say it’s pretty good. Let’s move on to four. Four is the fruiest I think out of the out of the four so far. You definitely get black raspberry, red raspberry meat, although you do you do get some of those mineral hits. It’s not all fruit. That’s what I love about these GSMs. They’re so complex, so unique. Fruity up front, but quite mineral on the back end. I thought at first, man, this was going to be like a big fruit bomb, but no, it’s it really has a lot of mineral notes. It’s so funny. I like I said, I knew what these wines were beforehand. I have two old world wines and two new world wines. Although those terms are outdated and I don’t know which is which may maybe I think the first one might be new worldy but this again has big tannins. A lot of times you get the tannins the spice from Morvdra Sarra adds some color and ganache is quite fruity and elegant. This is tanic. I think the softest one the one with less tannins is my number one. Let’s get to the reveal. Let’s see if Costco wins out. If you like this content, I would like you to consider becoming a channel member. I have several tiers, but in the Grand Reserve tier, I have a monthly live hangout tasting where we talk, shop, share wines. It’s really difficult to find family and friends that are into wine like you and I are. And that’s what this community is. They’re perks for other members, too. And it supports the work I do here. So, thank you. I did a Costco tasting video recently. I was blown away by the Rioa. Some other wines were just, you know, just okay. Like the Malbeck was just okay. I was really disappointed when I did one a couple years ago of the Kianti Classical Reserva here. I was not disappointed. Everything above N. So the Costco is pretty good. We’ll see if it’s wins. Number three. I’m going to start with number three here. I didn’t know if I was going to go 89 points, but I tasted it. It had enough mineral flavors to push me over 90. It had complexity. It wasn’t so simple. I did 90 right on the board. I mean, it was like 89 plus 90. I went back and forth. I’m going to stick to 90. Licorice, mineral, red raspberry. It was really good. However, in comparison, because wine is a comparison game to the other ones, it wasn’t as explosive. 90 points for wine number three. Let’s take a look here. This is the Kirkland signature shat pop kuved tervois de pop 2023 which is a fantastic more elegant vintage in chat enough to pop 70% ganache 10% sra 10% more vera 10% senso again by gam ganet it showed well 1899 I think it’s really good to me this tasted more like a coturon vage type deal. It wasn’t like as big and concent to pops are concentrated. The yields are really low and short enough to pop. That’s why you get the concentration good. Not blowing my face off. Wow. I almost I I could have swore I was like, man, that might be the Costco one because a wine like set enough to pop has to be pretty rich. But again, 90 points for a wine that’s $18.99. Worth checking out. Let’s go to the next one. Why number four was the fruiest in the nose, but definitely not in the palette. The tannins really came out. I gave it 91 points. I think that one and four are probably the two Newer World wines, but we’ll see. 91 points. I thought this was delicious wine. Let’s take a look. This is the Leote de Barville shot to pop from Bro 2022. This comes in at $39.99. Bro is a fantastic house. They I think they have their own grapes, but they also do a lot of negotiant wine. Like I have a video coming up. I’m going to use their Conriu, which I think they buy grapes for. I think the Lejo de Barville is their negotiant wine because then they have a higher shat to pop as well. Uh wrote the estate’s pretty cool too. It’s a pretty beautiful estate. It’s on the southern side of Shatnaf to pop. $39.99. Kind of unheard of for a shat to pop. And wow, look at this. The two shot enough to pops. If you’re seeing closer to the bottom here, the top two wines very good. Number one, I said it had the typical gach flavors, but I said it had eucalyptus, which might have tipped me off because I pick up eucalyptus a lot in Australian red wines, which there are a lot of great Aussie GSM. Some of the oldest ganache vines in the world are actually from Australia. 92 points. Eucalyptus. Did I Did it tip me off? I got it right, baby. This is the Henki Henry 7 from Barrosa 2023. Hensky. One of the great names in Australian wine. Hill of Grace is one of the iconic wines of Australia and the world. That’s Sharz. This is 81% Sharz, 11% ganache, 6% Mataro, 2% Vion. Uh, this is good. This comes in around it’s got weird pricing. I’ve seen it as low as 30. I’ve seen it. I’ve seen it upwards of 40. Good wine. 92 points. I had lunch with Johan Henki, one of the sons. Really down to earth guy. And I I like the wine so much. Number one, you saw my excitement when I said, “Woo, it’s got a touch of funk. It’s more mineraly driven. 94 points. I think this is an excellent wine.” I don’t remember this wine having a touch of funk. I thought for sure this was the shot enough to pop. Every vintage I’ve ever had of this wine, I love it to death. This is American, baby. This is the Beckman Vineyards biodnamic producer in Santa Barbara County. Ku Lebec. This is their entrylevel wine. 2021. This is 50% Sarra, 38% ganache, 7% more VRA, 5% Kunwa. This comes in around 25 bucks. I’ve seen it even lower. Every vintage I have just absolutely adored that wine. Seek it out. I thought it was shot enough to pop blind. So, Kirkland Signature. Okay. Not the best here. So, tell me, have you tasted this wine from Kirkland Signature? What do you think about GSMs? Do you like ganache as much as me? I have a ginache video coming up, another one. I’ve done one before because I love the grapes so much. I’d love to hear. Drop it in the comments below.

Awesome video! Well done, I love the concept seeing how some Kirkland wines stack up. Thank you, please keep it up.
GSM blends are my jam with the right balance of intensity and elegance in most cases. The savory, funky, earth driven notes add just enough complexity on the palate that keep me coming back for more.
I always enjoy the great content you put out. It shows how much care and effort you place in every video regardless of format or location. You definitely deserve the recognition for making the world of wine exciting while still being able to nerd out from time to time. 😊🍷
I think you were very generous to give the kirkland wine a "90". I personally found it austere and lifeless. My palate may not be as sophiosticated as yours but gave it an 87. Perhaps be cause the last few years ive only drank grenache from priorat and chateaunu-de-pape and the price point is higher. looking forwrd to trying the beckman and henschke.
You are leading them to my fishing hole!
Grenache and Mourvedre were made for each other. Syrah and Mourvedre get along fine, but Syrah is a bit too much for Grenache. That is why the normal CdP red is 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre. And 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre is also common. Of course, the winemaker works with what he has and that depends a bit on what Nature had to say about the vintage. I have always enjoyed Beckman and am impressed you liked their bottle over the Henschke.
Nice review. Australia produces some very nice GSM although at times a little fruit forward on the lower end price point.
Trader Joe’s wines exceptionally better. To bias Costco wines taste like tyranny horrible work experience. Could never judge them without thought jumping in.
I enjoy your views on wine so much
Same winemaker as the Kirkland Gigondas – and I remember that being really good for its style.
I’m disappointed that the Henschke wine wasn’t called “the Henschke File”
Bro! How do I join the super secret club of monthly members. I’ve been trying for the last two weeks. I wonder if I have to be on a PC instead of my phone.
$18 for a 90 point Chatty? Sounds like a Thanksgiving wine to me.
I have Beaucastel. I like it. Looking at also getting Clos des Papes and Clos St. James potentially.
Wow Matthew your energy with wine 🍷 is amazing. Mine is starting to fizzle away not fully but some for sure. Do you ever get bored of wines and need a break away to savour something else like beer , spirits like a fine scotch ? I have to take a break once in a while for about a week or 2 then back at the wines again. When I do that though I have to remember what I’m sniffing and tasting again and for that your videos do the trick 🍷😋. Cheers and keep up the great work – love your style and life too 😉🤗
This guy is weird!
I hope we can do a Priorat vs CDP tasting one day.

Such good wines come from the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County. As much as I love Costco, it looks like the real value here is the GSM from the tiny Ballard Canyon AVA. Thanks for this really informative tasting.😋🍷
Your pronunciation of the French language is horrendous
when I started my wine appreciation many years ago, Southern Rhône wines were among the best value good wines available, GSM wasn’t even a term then but now even though certainly more pricy GSMs from CNP to good Cote du Rhone Villages wine still offer a lot of quality for the price and we shouldn’t forget the Gigondas appellation!
I keep wanting to try that Kirkland Châteauneuf-du-Pape, because I hear good things about it. But once I step into the store it's "I need this, this, and this" and forget to grab a bottle. Hopefully I won't miss out on it!
I do love a good GSM! Especially the French ones, from Southern Rhone. Thanks! I will hopefully try a bottle soon!
P.S. Have you done a summer red video before? I prefer red wine, and would love to know of some good ones to have for summer. I did find a really good Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley. Am I headed in the right direction with a Pinot? Thanks!
not really comparing similar wines. if the wine is mainly syrah versus grenache versus one blending in voigner. the tasting indicates this person likes wines that have more syrah in them.
I like GSM but tend to stick with Rhone for the more pronounced minerality and complexity. For me, New World GSM's are often too plush and lack acid. But you've peaked my interest in Beckmen!
Blind tasting is the only way to go. Anything else is too biased.
Please keep doing blind tastings
Of recent Kirkland Rhone releases I prefer the Gigondas. Same producer as the CNDP.
I'll skip costco. Save me a bottle at Plum. Thanks
Chateauneuf does not reference a new castle for the pope, the name Chateauneuf predates the popes of Avignon by several centuries at least. It comes from the Latin name for the town
