A month-long independent trip to France and Italy with my mom. We went from Paris in to Milan out, taking a train from Paris to Lyon, and from Lyon we rented a car and traveled to eastern France – Annecy, Chamonix, several regions in southern France – Avignon, Montpellier, Nice, Monaco, Italy – Sirmione, Como, and Milan. This video is of the second city, ‘Lyon, France’. < DAY 7. From Paris to Lyon> Lyon is about a two-hour TGV ride from Paris Gare de Lyon. I wasn’t sure what the train conditions would be like, so I booked a first-class seat, but the seats are comfy and you can plug in USB cables at each seat, and there’s even a 230v outlet. I heard so many stories about luggage being lost on the train that I booked a seat right in front of the luggage compartment. LOL But I was still anxious, so I tied two suitcases together and tied them tightly to the luggage compartment shelf. LOL Now I’m going to go to Lyon with peace of mind. I’ll drink coffee I bought at the train station and watch Paris fade away (this is what the outskirts of Paris look like) on my iPad. If you edit and enjoy the scenery, two hours will pass in a flash and you will arrive at Lyon Part-Dieu Station. There are two main train stations in Lyon, Lyon Part-Dieu and Lyon-Perrache, and we arrived at Lyon Part-Dieu Station. The TGV usually arrives at Lyon Part-Dieu. Lyon Perrache Station is located in the Pressquรญn, and I heard from an acquaintance who lives in Lyon… that there is a homeless tent village formed around Pรฉrache Station, and he said that the atmosphere is scary and that we should avoid it if possible. We intentionally avoided that area . Anyway, we arrived at Lyon Part-Dieu Station -! My first impression was that Lyon had a very urban feel. Since I had booked an Airbnb for my Lyon accommodation, I had to do self-check-in (the self-check-in instructions were sent via text message). First, I went to get my key. I’m always nervous when I’m dragging a suitcase. This is where I get my key (Key Nest). I left my key at a convenience store-like place. Here, I gave them the password the host gave me and they gave me the key. When I check out, I can also come here to return it . Now, on the way to my accommodation, a certain person from the convenience store kept following us, so I was a little anxious . Even though I was dragging my suitcase, I didn’t get ahead and it felt like he was lingering behind me. So I pretended to look for directions and stopped in the middle to kill time while looking at my phone with my mom. Haha. When we arrived at the accommodation, it was a bit on the outskirts and not a very crowded place, so I kept thinking, “What if the person from earlier kept following me?” Hotels have an information desk, but with Airbnb, it’s actually just the two of us when you enter the building.. I was scared because I thought there would be no one to help me!? (From this point on, I started feeling uneasy for no reason.. I won’t be able to go out once I get off in Lyon..) Anyway, safely checked into the accommodation~! This is the accommodation where I will stay for 2 nights and 3 days in Lyon. The bathroom is on the right side of the entrance. The bathroom size is comparable to that of a Paris accommodation ใ ใ There is also a boiler and a washing machine = That means you can do laundry. It was spacious and comfortable and nice. There is a room across from the bathroom… It has a really small single-sized bed ใ It seems like a big person would be very cramped. And there is a living room with a two-person sofa bed in the living room. There was a window overlooking the street and a well-equipped kitchen . (When I looked closer) There was a Nespresso coffee machine! My mom brought Nespresso capsules and asked why I brought such heavy ones ใ ใ Who would have thought I would use them here? ใ ใ Aside from this, there were many other things my mom asked me why I brought, but in the end, I ate the most and used the most ใ ใ The accommodation was nice, and more than anything, it was nice to be able to eat something after suffering from the high prices of eating out in Paris ! Today I’m going to go grocery shopping nearby and rest a bit . I’m tired because I’m nervous on moving days.. I went to the market . Tonight, I’m going to make tomato pasta(?) with the ham ravioli I bought at the market and eat it with warmed up canned ratatouille. There’s also fig salad(?) so it’s a pretty decent meal ใ ใ I ate everything deliciously . After eating, it was dessert time. Chocolate madeleines, and they were individually wrapped so it was even better (I really like eating these.. hehe) The chocolate coating was a little hard, but the texture was good when I bit into it and it was so delicious. After that, I almost ate one madeleine a day.. I think they used to sell them at All Young, but they’re not there anymore ใ ใ I bought a few bags and ate them all myself ใ ใ I had boiled eggs, apples, yogurt, and coffee for breakfast and left in a hurry. Since I’m leaving Lyon tomorrow morning, I need to make the most of today. To do that, I used the 24-hour unlimited transportation pass. It costs 6.90 euros per person and you can use the bus, tram, subway, and funicular. I used the travel wallet card this time and it’s convenient and good. This is a transportation card that can be used for 24 hours . Even if you have a receipt, it can’t be reissued, so be careful not to lose it! Lyon is a city of gastronomy and is also famous for its murals . So I’m going to go see the murals first. The first mural I’m going to see is the Mur des Canuts. It ‘s located in the Croix-Rousse area of Lyon. It realistically depicts the lives of silk weavers (Canuts), who were the main industry in the area, and the neighborhood they lived in . What’s interesting is that the content is updated and modified according to the changes in Lyon, so you can see that the people, buildings, and even the season in the murals change slightly depending on the time of your visit. These murals are called trompe l’oeil murals, and they make it look real, so you can even do these kinds of scenarios. Haha. Who’s drawing who? Haha. Mom, you’re good. Haha. It was fun taking pictures like this. The next mural is called the Fresque des Lyonnais (Wall of Lyonnais) . Do you see that mural that looks like a real building? Haha. This mural depicts people from Lyon or people with deep ties to Lyon. But, the only ones I know of are Saint-Exupรฉry and the Little Prince… It’s okay if you don’t know anyone . Anyone can pretend to know someone here. My mom even became friends with the chef. She even ordered wine there, so I drank it. Lyon is also called Little Paris . It’s similar, but different. If Paris has the Seine and the รle de la Citรฉ, Lyon has a peninsula-like area formed between the Rhone and a body of water called the Presqu’รฎle. Similar to how the รle de la Citรฉ in Paris serves as the historical center, the Presqu’รฎle in Lyon also serves as the heart of the city. Anyway, if you walk along the Rhone, it feels a bit like Porto and a little Paris. Now that I’ve seen the murals, I want to go and feel the gastronomy. I heard this is a street of good restaurants. There are restaurants that are all lined up in a narrow alley and are presumed to be good restaurants(?). It suddenly rained again and there was octopus so I came in . We didn’t have any sharing or anything, we ordered the same thing. It was mashed potatoes, grilled vegetables, and grilled octopus, and it was really, really delicious, so I ate it all up… This is one of the memorable dishes of this trip. Lyon feels like a more modernized Paris. Let’s go to Place Bellecour . Place Bellecour, located in the center of the Presqu’ile, is the geographical and symbolic center of Lyon. They say that many major events and festivals are held here. When we went, there was a local specialty market. This square is also known as a good square to walk around, and the red dirt floor gave it a unique atmosphere. And on one side of this square, you can see the Little Prince and Saint-Exupรฉry statues. Now, we’ll go see Notre Dame Cathedral in the distance. How do you get up to that hill? You can take the funicular . This is included in the transportation ticket you bought in the morning. From here, you can look down on Lyon at a glance . Doesn’t this view look similar to the view from the Sacrรฉ-Cลur Basilica in Montmartre, Paris? The interior of the magnificent cathedral was delightful . The Korean Hail Mary , a delightful Hail Mary in various languages, was also featured. Right next to the Notre Dame de Fourviรจre Cathedral is the Gallo-Roman Theatre, a Roman ruin. Lyon was an important city during the Roman colonial period, and this theater was built in 15 BC by Emperor Augustus. Therefore, this ruin signifies that Lyon is not just a French city, but also holds an important Roman legacy in European history. Being in such an old ruin feels like time travel, and the contrast of time makes me feel incredibly small. There’s also a beautiful garden . The French seem to be very good at gardening . On the way back, I just have to go down these steep stairs. This concludes my fulfilling Lyon itinerary! It’s only two hours from Paris, and the city isn’t that big, so I thought it would be a great day trip from Paris. Today is the day we rent a car and head to Annecy. Today is the start of our three-week rental car trip. But it’s raining heavily since morning… It was raining so I was even more nervous for no reason. But I got everything ready to check out, returned the key, and dragged my suitcase… I arrived at the rental car pickup location . I’ve rented cars abroad a few times, and even though I had full coverage insurance when I made the reservation, they insist on getting their own insurance when they rented it out to me. Like, you have to do that so you can get compensation right away… Their goal is to get you to sign up by making it seem like you have to sign up, so never fall for it. If you signed up when you made the reservation, just say you don’t need it. Even this time, the employee who was good at English suddenly started speaking in French and pretending not to speak English when talking about insurance. At first, he was really friendly, but when I kept refusing to sign up for insurance, he became rude later. Haha. Anyway, after all that fuss, we finished the rental. I took a video of every nook and cranny of the car just in case. The car we had reserved was a BMW 118d, but they said they didn’t have that car and gave us a Citroen. Haha . Both suitcases should fit in the trunk… but they didn’t, so I was flustered. I thought I’d have to leave my suitcase in the car in case I had to stop by somewhere on the way, so I hoped it would all fit in the trunk… This is where I started to get stressed out ใ ใ Anyway, since it’s been a while since I’ve driven abroad, I’m nervous but also excited for Annecy. Meanwhile, the French parking tower… They installed this scary device so that they don’t forget to pay for parking?? When you pay for your parking, it goes right in like this. I have a friend who runs a cafe in Lyon, so I’m going to stop by on the way there . It’s a cafe that my friend’s younger sister runs with her French husband. They serve Korean sandwiches and coffee, and it’s delicious! It’s nice to meet a Korean after a long time, and my sister gave me a lot of recommendations for places to visit in the south , and we had a delicious lunch. Anyway, now I’m going to Annecy, a city that I’m really, really looking forward to! It rained a lot in Paris and Lyon, but I have a feeling the weather in Annecy will be nice too! Annecy has become a city that I definitely want to visit again. If you’re curious, please watch the next video and subscribe, like, and leave a comment!!!
