Why Thailand Beats Every Other SE Asian Country (According to an Expat)

All right, guys. Um, got AJ back on the channel. Uh, AJ, you’re I find you extremely interesting in in the fact that you’re at a location that I’m actually looking into going to. So, we’re going to dive into Thailand, do a deep dive into Thailand with a guy who’s got a lot of experience there. Stick around for today’s video. Pure and free through the lens I dance with thee. All right, AJ, I appreciate you coming back on the channel again. Thank you. And uh guys, check out AJ’s channel. Super informative for uh Thailand and and um just traveling around. You have a lot of information out there. What is your channel’s name one more time? Angelon Wallace, the Nomad Recruiter. And there will be a link in the uh description and also the pin comment. So, What kind of advice would you give a guy? Like I’ve been here nine years. I I’ve been to Thailand a few times. I even had a Thai girlfriend which Yeah. Uh ended up not working out because I I just couldn’t find any good paying jobs there at the time. This was back in 2016. Mhm. But now I want to go give it a shot cuz I I I think I feel like we’re almost in the the same position. Like you feel like you kind of get a little bored or tired. you want to try something new and I feel the same way. Y what what advice would you give to a new guy? New guy landing in Thailand. What would you what would you tell new person coming to Thailand? Um I definitely would research cities that match your personality. Each city is for a different person. I think sometimes we see a lot of the influencers in Bangkok and and you know I talk to people and they’re just like I’m coming to Bangkok and I’m like why? And it’s like, oh, cuz I saw my favorite influencer shoot a video there. And it’s just like, well, for a place like PIA, let’s just say Paya, which is only 2 hours away, you may be a beach person. There’s no beaches in Bangkok. True. So, you know, if you want to wake up to the beautiful beaches, which me and Joby did when we lived in Pata, it’s gorgeous. And like Paya is uh it’s quiet, it’s relaxed, it’s uh it’s not much foot traffic, you know, there’s no BTS, there’s no trains. Yeah. Um, and it’s and it’s a little uh less tense when it comes to the rules. You know, you know, you can you can get away sometimes riding a your motorcycle without a helmet or you know, you get away with some things, you know, sometimes from time to time. But I would say research the location that fits your personality cuz in Shang Mai, you’re going to get a lot of nomads and in Phuket you’re going to get a lot more they call it the the white Bali. That’s what they call it, you know. So it’s a lot more Australians, Germans going to Phuket where in Pia in certain areas you’re going to get a huge number of Indians and a huge number of Russians as well. So I think just starting off again it depends on what your budget is. One thing I will say is you can get better quality of living in smaller locations like Paya or Hoy Hen or where you can find like we had a house in Paya for $200 a month with 45 m right on the beach and you know it was an older building but I mean who cares you know you know it’s $200 a month and you’re not in the house all day. You know the great thing about a place like Paya, we were eating at a place called Terminal 21 which is in I know it well. Yeah. Very famous. We have two in Bangkok and one in Paya and we have this uh food court called Pure 21 where meals are one $2 uh you know a day. So, I mean, you’re able to, you know, if you’re someone bringing in5 10,000 a month, you’re able to 10x, you know, I mean, I mean, imagine just spending $2 on a meal. You can eat out every day. And it’s that’s that’s a that’s a privilege that I think that the 1% has in America because we don’t see a lot of Americans going out to restaurants on a daily. When I grew up, I grew up in a poor family. My mom would take us once every three months to uh to Olive Garden or or or Ponderosta or you know or go Golden Corrals, you know. So, you know, a lot of buffet restaurants, but so I feel like it’s a luxury to be able and I’m not talking about, you know, sometimes when people hear one $2 meal, they’re thinking like, “Oh, you’re just eating rice.” No, we’re eating sushi. We’re eating, you know, we’re eating lobster. We’re eating crab. We’re eating, you know, we have steaks. You like meats with steak. Steaks and rice. It’s a huge luxury that you’re not getting back home at the end of the day. So, I would just say find out what works for you locationwise. If you are someone that can’t deal with traffic, don’t do it. If you can’t deal with a lot of people or air pollution is bad or if you have asthma, a place like Bangkok may not be the best location for you. When when would you say Bangkok is a good spot for for people? What type of person do you think Bangkok is? Uh, as a s as a single guy who wants to date, Bangkok is better. Uh, huh, that’s a good that’s a really good question. Um, personally, yeah. I mean, yes, your your options are going to be um 10x. I think for in Bangkok for every man there’s there’s five maybe I think five to eight women for every man like ratio for real women. Well, yeah, that’s yeah, it’s going you’re going to have a few. And you know, to my to my surprise, you’re starting to see a high number of foreigners uh you know, dating a lot more transgenders in in Thailand. It it wasn’t something I was seeing when I first arrived over, but now you’re seeing it more and more frequently where I felt like at the time when I first got there, people were still being very secretive about it. And now it’s becoming a a well-known thing cuz and I’m not going to lie, you know, me and my girlfriend, we always say all the time, the the lady boys are extremely beautiful. They’re like, “They’re gorgeous.” And it’s just like when they’re too beautiful, that’s when you That’s when you know, that’s when you know, me and Joby has a joke. We always play. I used to ask her what she I asked her, “Was she a lady?” Cuz she was really pretty. I was like, “Are you a lady boy?” She didn’t understand it. I’m like, “I’m moving to Thailand.” But I will say yes, your your you have your apps, you have your Tinder, you have your Bumble, you have your OKC cupcid, you have your um your coffee meets bagos, you got u I can’t forget the other one that that’s really So there’s a lot of dating apps tie friendly. Thai friendly as well. I think that um when you meet uh if you’re I guess it depends on what you’re looking for dating wise. You will come across a lot of just like Manila and you know you’re going to come off a lot of welloff Asian women sometimes. Sure. Where they may not be as submissive. Okay. Um they could be a little little I guess Americanized in their ways of dating sometimes. Um but so but yes, I think your odds would be much higher trying to date at Bangkok. But do be mindful that you know what are you you got to ask yourself what are you looking for? Are you looking for someone to be submissive? Are you looking for someone to be pretty? It’s there situations where I’ve had uh colleagues who have beautiful girlfriends, but they spoke no English, you know, or you or I have colleagues that have beautiful partners, but they didn’t know work around the house. Sure. You know, so it’s just a matter of what you’re what you’re looking for. I feel that um you know um but when you go to your areas like Pia when you get on Tinder 90% of the women are going to be hookers or prostitutes kind of like like angels I would assume as well. So you know I always my advice for for dating wise I always tell guys go meet someone at their job. That’s the best thing you can do. Go to that massage parlor go to that shopping mall. Go to the dentist. go to go meet them at work at work because because that is going to increase your chances even more of finding someone and then when you find out how much they’re making you can decide on if you want to uh and that’s a good topic that we should talk about cuz a lot of guys don’t know they’re always wondering like should I let make my girlfriend quit her job cuz she’s only making $2 $300 a month I could just pay her that and that’s a good question yeah right especially for maybe guys like us who are like who move who constantly moving constantly moving digital nomads where they could be an asset that’s uh helping us out. Yeah. I I need that myself actually. Somebody to edit and do like we met. Yeah. Yeah. I mean Yeah. I mean like it’s it was it was a I’ve been traveling for the last 10 years. Um as you know I lived in Brazil, lived in Colombia. I was in Argentina. Then I made my way to Eastern Europe. I was in Romania, Serbia. I’ve been moving around. I dated a few women. And then I realized with my lifestyle, I need someone that can move with me. And I had I discovered that almost almost four years ago and I it was just it kept getting challenging to find. So then I just thought I need to probably start looking in certain areas to find women like that. But with the Filipino the passport is probably more their passport is more challenging to more super I to be to be honest I almost gave up when when my girlfriend got denied entry as someone who has traveled to over 100 countries. I was already ready to pull. I was ready. I’m I’m not doing this cuz I thought it was going to be a lot of challenges, but I stayed hopeful and it was just my girlfriend was just extremely rare to find on the market. You know, it was just extremely rare for me to find someone like her. So, it was just worth the effort at the end of the day. Would you say it’s as easy um as a as a as a black guy to date in Thailand or the Philippines? Yeah. Being a black Yeah. Yeah. So when I when it comes to the the the the race of people like for far as like there are different types of blacks and there are different types of whites, I I’ll put it this way. There are your younger black guys and your younger white guys that come to Thailand. They just want to party. They want to party. They want to sleep with huggers. And then you have your older white guys and your only older black guys. They want to they usually get them like a woman that that take takes care of them. Sure. And then you have someone like me, you know, I, you know, I was an innovation consultant. Uh, you know, interned at Deote, got my master’s degree, you know, University Business School, graduated top of my class. I’m dating like, you know, la creme de la creme the top of the line type of women, you know. So, I’m, you know, if you look at a lot of my past girlfriends, a lot of them were models. They work for at corporate jobs, you know, like the uh GM, Chrysler. So, u Deote. So I’m I’m dating a lot more higher upper upchalant women for me as like the category that I fall into, you know. So I guess you know and I and I try to say that I guess politely for some people I could say okay you have your ghetto black guys and you have your country redneck white guys and then you put me the black educated guy the articulate one you know and it’s just like my so my caliber of women are completely different you know politely saying it you know without being offensive just to give clarity cuz some people may say he keeps saying he’s a different black guy what does he mean you know, and I’m like, well, let me let me break it down for you, you know. So, yeah. Do you what would you tell uh guys as far as dating tips if you’re going to give them tips for dating a Thai girl? Yep. Because a lot of them um there are some advantages to having a Thai girl from there, right? Cuz she can help you with she knows how things work there. She knows the language. Um there’s also advantages to having a Filipino. But, uh I know that Thai women really want you to be there. or they don’t want to do this long distance thing. Is there any difference uh or or tips you would tell a guy like if you want to date a Thai girl, you should really understand this or if you if you’re looking to move to Thailand, the best time to try to really talk to them is 2 weeks before you go over two weeks. I think trying to get in touch with them 2 3 months in advance, the conversation is going to dry down. And of course, they’re going to be sleeping with a lot of other men while you’re speaking to them. They got to pay their bills. there there other guys that they’re they’re already there. So, they’re not going to really give you their full commitment. As in the Philippines with Joby, she gave me her full commitment. We talked from morning time, afternoon, night time. We showered together, literally cameras on the shower. We were on the call 24/7. Let’s keep this G-rated. Keep it G-rated. Keep it G-rated. We were on the call 24/7. She was fully committed to me. She’s calling me, checking out with me, emailing me day and night. So that is extremely rare or hard to find in Thailand unless you probably target a province area which is going to what what’s going to be important is to put your Thai women to test. You’re going to have to give them tests to see if they’re really for you or if if it’s real fault. You’re going to have to test them out. And what would your what would that Yeah. So one thing is one you you should try to see uh eventually down the line where they live. There are Thai women that I dated before I was in a relationship that were married and you know so but their husbands wasn’t a able to give them uh the quality of life that is affordable in Bangkok. So I dated some married women. There are also uh women I will put them to a test when I didn’t have money. I would I would see what they would say in situations like you know like when I would go to a coffee shop and say I forgot my wallet. Maybe not something so it doesn’t have to be rocket expensive, but just to see if they’re willing to spend some type of money on me or some type of effort. What made me fall in love with my girlfriend is she purchased her own ticket to Thailand. So, I bought her first flight. Yeah. I bought her first flight and and it got denied. She paid her own savings to come to Thailand for me. I didn’t buy it and I you know, I didn’t tell her to do it as well. So, so yeah. And and just to clarify her the the first one she was offloaded she was traveling by herself. By herself and the second time you came out and then you traveled. The second time we got uh we found a friend for her to travel with that that already had more credibility to to come to Thailand. Okay. So that that definitely helped with the and we changed and we changed the location she flew out of as well. So it was more challenging to fly out of Manila. So we switched it to Angel Cebu. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Okay, perfect. Well, great. The Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, that’s a Yeah, that’s a good point. That’s a lot of good information. Yeah. Do you uh I guess the last thing about Thai women, do you do you feel like they are also testing you? Like they really want to make sure you’re not just a tourist there for a month or Yeah. Thai women are going to constantly um you know, they’re going to constantly uh Yeah, they’re they’re going to test you. They’re gonna, you know, the the the thing about the thing that most Taiwan women don’t take foreigner savory is because so many foreigners come and go. So they don’t they always they’re going to ask you what’s your visa. They’re going to want to see your visa stamp. So that is something Yeah. And they’re going to constantly ask you through your dating application. They’re going to constantly ask you what type of visa you have. They’re going to constantly ask you how long you going to be here. That’s going to be a constant question. So when I would so when I used to put up my dating profile you like foreigner living here working here visa I have a visa you know I because it it was it was a frequent it was a frequent asked question if you were looking for uh something more serious Thai women are extremely beautiful uh intelligent women and they’re very down to earth and uh one thing I will say is they fall in love pretty quick so things do move extremely fast. That happens here, too. It happens here, but it’s it’s a little, you know, I guess maybe living in Thailand and having options to so many things to do. It’s like I think, you know, it just speeds up the process a little more, but and I love it that Thai women are are are down to go with the flow. But going back to our previous debate, you’re going to meet a lot of people who are only making $300 a month, and it’s going to get to a point where you’re going to want to move around. And if this person is has passed all your tests and you feel that you feel like you can trust them, Yeah. I think it’s better to just tell them that, hey, go ahead and quit this job and, you know, I I’m just going to fully take care of you at the end of the day. And, you know, because it just it just it just makes life much so much easier. Me and me and my girlfriend, we wanted to go to Vietnam. We just spontaneously booked the flight. It was $50 and we were we were going. We didn’t have to ask her boss. We didn’t have to see if she needed permission to take off. We have to do any of those things at the end of the day. And you don’t want to be going through that when you’re living a life of freedom um at the end of the day as well. Exactly. Uh last question here. We talked about if you really are a single guy and you’re really wanting to date your your numbers and stuff are going to be much better for Bangkok. What would be the other other bonuses of living in Bangkok as far as like if I mean you really feel like you know man I don’t you really feel like let’s just say let’s say you’re somebody from I’m from Detroit so I’m I’m used to 8 in of snow. I’m used to I’m used to a pop a population of plus-sized people. Everyone’s big. I was telling my girlfriend I’m skinny in Detroit. She was like what? I’m like yes I’m a 2X. I’m a 3X. I’m skinny. You know like Yeah, cuz I’m like it’s it’s 8x. It’s 10x is where I’m from. So, it’s just like, you know, and you’re waking up to snow every day. You’re waking up to traffic. You got apartment complexes that doesn’t have amenities. You go to you go to um you go to Bangkok, you feel like you just moved to San Antonio or Houston or you feel like you just moved to downtown Los Angeles. I mean, you have a skyrise, you have a rooftop, you have a swimming pool, you have a a co-working space, you have a full gym at your apartment. We don’t have those that many conveniences in America for the lower level class of living. There are people I know in Atlanta paying 2,000 a month and and they’re and they’re still in a in a in a rough neighborhood. You don’t have to worry about car insurance or car note. I was paying almost, you know, $4500 a month for car insurance. You know, man, you got you got to pay your car note. You got to And then most importantly, I had to walk around with a gun every day when I lived in Michigan. You know, I was fully strapped and loaded, ready to go. Extra clips and you know, so so I say I say it. So you’re you feel secure in Bangkok. You feel wealthy and you wake up with this zen like this positive energy and it’s always something to do. You can hop on a bike. You grab your coffee, go out, grab breakfast, maybe go to some muai, go to the gym. You’re you’re going out to a nice, beautiful cafe on the water for lunch. You got a date here in the afternoon and you may have another date at night time. You do have to understand that in Bangkok or in Thailand in general, um, men don’t chase women, women chase men. So you you are a pri I’m sorry, you are a prize in these locations where you may have one, two, sometimes three, three dates a day depending on how your conversation goes as well. Now, you may say that could be exhausting, but I remember for me when I was in America, I went on a date. I paid $400 for one for the first date. Yeah. And you know, I tell this story all the time. You know, I spent $80 to fill up the gas tank. I brought I spent like almost $20 for some roses, $20 for parking, and then we’re in a restaurant ordering desserts and all this stuff. And you know what? I And I tell people at the end of the day, do you know what I got? I got a church hood. Do you know what a church hug is? A church hood is what you get like that. Yes. So, you know, I got a church hug. I didn’t even get a kiss on the cheek really. And and so in Bangkok, let’s just say hypothetically you got two or three dates. Okay. Your first dates may be a coffee in the morning. You may have a second date for lunch for maybe $10, $15. And then you may have a rooftop date that may just be drinks for $10. You just had three dates in one day. And you’re not broke, right? You went to the gym. You got, you know, you got your you got your exercise in. You’re coming home to a luxur luxurious condo, high-rise, city view. You’re living like a king. You’re living like a queen to the women out there as well, you know. You know, you know. So, you’re you’re living like a king. You’re living like queen, you know. So, it’s just like, man, you’re waking up to a lifestyle that you dream of. Yeah. That’s that’s that’s, you know, 10 times cheaper for you. Your dollar goes a long way. And most importantly, you look at time different. I used to be in America. I used to work almost seven days a week. I was working three jobs. And man, I was going bald, you know. Man, I was going bald. People used to say I look 55. No offense, but people were I’m young. I was like, people were saying, “You’re you look old, AJ.” You know, and I was like, man, I came here and you start to look young. You feel young, you know, when you when you come to Thailand, you know? So, you dress young. You don’t care about the whole corporate world. I’m I’m in flip-flops right now. I’m in sandals. I’m getting my manicures. I’m getting massages every day. I’m just I’m stress free. And that’s what you get in Bangkok. That’s what you get in Thailand. That’s what you get in Asia. And it’s just it’s just, you know, it’s a it’s a beautiful thing. Um at the end of the day, it’s a beautiful life. We’ll end it with we’ll end it with that, guys.
