The Big Euro Bike Trip Part 4
When we wake, hear the birds and see the sun side. Our fears are done. All the good times just begun. Oh, we know what we have. Let’s hold on tight. Found what we’re looking for in life. call us crazy, but things are finally right. Oh, good morning and uh welcome back to my channel. Just live a little. Um today is day what is it? Uh day four. Day four. Had a great night’s sleep last night. Absolutely solid. I don’t know what it is. I seem to sleep better in the tent than I do at home in my comfortable bed. It’s um coffee time and um so today the plan is I’m going to ride from here to I’m keeping the noise down cuz it’s still not even 7:00 a.m. Um I’m going to ride from here to Fussen which is on the Austrian border. It’s the German Austrian border. But um Fussen uh I’ve been there before many years ago um with my daughters when they were younger. Um yep. And then um if I have time, which I’m sure I will, we’ll then nip over into Austria and uh find somewhere cool to camp in Austria and then we can um make further plans from there. But uh I’m not going to plan anything else other than that. Need to check the oil, attention of the chain, bits and pieces this morning. I’m not as organized this morning as I was yesterday. Um, I’m being a little bit chilled. I think I rushed to get on the bike yesterday. I’m not going to do that today, but I will be out of here by I guess 8:30, maybe earlier. The only worrying thing is that the the heat is it’s getting hotter in Europe at the moment and they’re warning uh people to be careful and yeah, that we’re talking 40 plus. Now I’m going to head into Austria and into the mountains today. So hopefully I can find a campsite that’s a little bit higher, maybe a little bit cooler. Um although last night perfect here. No problem at all. Anyway, um I’m going to get ready, have this, strip the tent down, pack the bike up, and leave. So I’ll see you on the bike. Welcome back on board. I’m just waiting for the satnav to sort itself out. I don’t know where I’m going. So, uh, [Music] so that was a a beautiful campsite. And I just spoke to the lady uh who didn’t speak a word of English, so it made me practice my German. She said it was very good, but yeah, I don’t think so. Um, so that’s it. Golden uh Goldberg campsite. Something my eye. Yeah. So, Goldberg campsite. Highly recommend it if you’re in this area. Um, it’s not far off the romantic road. Heat. Heat. So, I managed to squeeze my bag a little bit flatter this morning. So, I’ll get a little bit more space to sit on. Uh, I’m sat really comfortably at the moment. 6 mph. Lovely. National speed limit. 30 seconds later. What happens? I’m sitting at 70 mph on a field carriageway. This isn’t a motorway cuz I’ve said avoid motor weight on the car ride. So, uh yeah, it is what it is. I’m only on this 34 miles, but it’ll probably end up being a single road at some point, too. I can’t see how um 75 miles can take 1 hour, an hour and a half in a road like this. Tell you what though, this little bike has got some pull. I mean, it’s geared, so it sort of tops out 80, 90 mph going downhill, but uh um it’ll pull up a hill at 80 mph. So, I don’t know if the GoPro is going to be able to make that out, but uh that’s an awesome looking I mean, they’re in the cloud though, unfortunately. But, um the uh mountains in the distance, I’m guessing that’s Austria. I’m only um let’s have a look down now. 26 miles from the castle of Minstein. Check that out. Lake or a massive river. Okay. Okay, so the problem we got now is there’s some really slow trucks on this road and because I’m on a motorcycle, fortunately, I managed to overide about 50 60 cars um and get past that one. But then couple of kilometers up the road, there’s another one. Oh well, I’m turning off. Ningen, I think that’s how it’s pronounced. This is typical in this part of Germany. Well, a lot of Germany really. They paint the uh really nicely. They paint the outside of the building. Definitely coming into the Alps though, folks. All the cows are sitting down. Does that mean it’s going to rain or it’s just too hot for them? It is 32.9°. I’m sure you can see them now. Oh well. Beautiful. I don’t know what it is about mountains and water. H So this blue and white is the Bavarian flag is those are those colors. So you see that quite a lot down here. Heat. Heat. Schllo Novanstein. There it is. Castle Noanstein. But I need to park my bike somewhere safe. I can’t get my drone up here. Oh, gutted. I was tempted. There’s another one up there. I was tempted to have a go, but I can’t leave my gear here, can I? [Music] So, we are heading I’m not going to stay there, but uh we’re heading to Insrook. Um I’m going to head closer. See if we can see it better better. But um it’s telling me to go straight on, but I’m sure I can go around. Um, so I don’t know if you can make it out or not. It’s It’s a little bit hazy today. This is No Frankenstein up on the hill there. And I think I think the story goes that um they called him the mad prince, but King Levid II, there’s a castle there directly in front of us slightly to the right at 1:00, much lower. He was brought up there and there was some ruins up there. But uh he basically said that he’s going to build a new palace and live in it and that’s where he built it. And I think it was started in 1869 but it was never finished. So when you view it and you look on the inside, it doesn’t quite what’s the word I’m looking for? Look as impressive as the as the outside does. It looks like it’s a much older castle. So anyway, he was there, I believe, and he built that to move in, but it never did get finished. But if you do want to come and visit and have a look in, it’s worth it. You can’t drive up there. You can either walk or they uh from the bottom here, they have um uh they have horse and carts sort of thing. It’s quite nice. And they and they sort of walk you up there. I think you pay at the bottom. Um, and then you can either pay pay less to walk up or more to to get the uh horse and car up. Anyway, that’s No Frankenstein. But another interesting fact is it was featured in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Another interesting fact that apparently it was uh the uh the castles you see at Disneyland were basically copies of that. So there you go. That’s why it looks a little bit like those castles you see at Disneyland, Disney World, whatever. Anyway, I’m sorry I couldn’t get the drone up. Um, but safety first. Um, I have seen people drone in there, but perhaps that was on days when they weren’t flying. I don’t know. But there’s no way I’m going to send a drone up there with uh with guys with uh that, you know, paragliding. Not a good idea. Bit gutted cuz that was the main reason I brought the drone with me. I was in no hurry really to get away from there, but there’s no real point of me hanging around. I had a cold drink. I had uh a nice double cherry magnum. That was nice. And uh yeah, a glass of icy cold sparkling water. Lovely. That sorted me right out. So, this will be the 12th country for the Little Herald. I don’t know what’s done better, the Little Herald or my ass. Another look at Fuss and lucky you. Look, there we go. I’m going too fast. So, we’re only an two or two hours, but 63 miles. So, I’m hoping it’s going to be a nice road. Um, to be honest, I want to do probably an hour further than that and I shall find a campsite. Here we go. Welcome to USA. Welcome to Austria. Wow. Oh dear, this road’s slow. Oh, fancy a walk over that bridge. Oh, there’s a castle about it. Heat. Heat. [Music] So at the time when Noise Vanstein was built, um they Uh basically Bavaria and Austria um came together because the Pruss Prussians I don’t know I believe it’s the Prussians anyway they they were uh were attacking so Um, so they built a lot of castles to defend. I’ve turned you on because this tunnel’s been going on and on. Uh, Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat up Did you see that little moped with a trailer? Awesome. I think it’s a moped that’s holding us up. Tell you what, let’s see what this rest house looks like. Oh, look at that. Heat up here. [Music] In 300 ft, turn right. [Music] Hey, [Music] make your unit. Wow, good call. Who was it told me to pull over there? Which one of you? I could hear it in my ear. Well, I felt a bit guilty. I went in and the waitress was really stressed. It’s like a coach turned up or something. That’s how she was acting like she’s not used to that many people. It was rammed. But I felt a bit guilty. So I had a an Austrian boiled sausage um and a glass of mineral water which was lovely. And uh but the problem was trying to pay at the end of it. She says she’ll be back in a minute. Yeah. And then she got busy and then the guy said, “Oh, yeah, she’ll come.” I said, “Yeah, it’s all right.” 15 minutes, 20 minutes went by. Yeah. Anyway, I went out and stood by her while she was serving. She said, “Oh, I forgot if I gave up, I guess.” And I’m sorry. I said, “It’s okay.” Ain’t no problem. And so, I do remember coming down this road before back in my army and skiing days. If I remember rightly, it gets quite steep and um there are or there used to be some runoffs for trucks when the brakes fail. I think that’s this road anyway. It was like that, but it’s not there anymore. It’s getting cloudy. So, I found a campsite while I was in there, the other side of Insrook. Uh, I am not sure even if there’s going to be somebody there to um help me cuz it does say limited reception uh as in uh people in reception. It’s limited trying to get hold of people. Reception times. That’s what the word I was looking for. Anyway, um I’m hoping it’s uh it’s only 3:00 now. I’m going to be there in an hour. It’s only 27 miles. It’s so hot though. Everybody was uh pulling over for for cold drinks. So, can’t blame them. Did exactly what I thought when I saw the sign. I didn’t expect to be that full, but there we go. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Not a bad view around here though, is it? Second exit to B9. [Music] Speed camera. One thing you notice when you’re in the UK, uh, using ways, it’s constantly saying, and those you’ve got it know, pothole ahead. And they’re quite big when they people put those point those out. Pothole ahead. I’ve not heard that once since being in Europe. And I haven’t seen a pole. Yes. Come on. The UK government sort it out. Right. The campsite should be there somewhere behind here. Turn left. [Music] [Music] You’ve arrived at your destination. I’ve arrived at my destination apparently. [Music] Hello. Hello. fun. Yeah. Yeah. So, welcome to Austria. really really nice ice cold beer. This one came out of the freezer. Uh €270. That’s a paint in there. I love Austria. I’ve got to be honest, I absolutely love today. This is what it’s about, isn’t it? And tomorrow we’re going to have them mountains behind. I got here. Don’t know if you can see this. I literally just as I got pulled up and took took the tent out the bag, I felt a spot of rain. Can you hear the thunder? Yeah, we had thunder and then it tipped down for about a minute, but I managed to get the tent up first and um got all my bags in there. Put the cover on the old bike. But we arrived and I guess uh I guess we’ve done about 200 miles today, something like that. But as you saw, they’re pretty slow roads. And uh I wanted to send a drone up around No Vanstein. That couldn’t happen. And you might have seen as I was driving off, I was staring at the um paragiders cuz I so wanted you to just pull up and go come and give us a shot. I wouldn’t have flown it myself. Well, I probably would have done uh No, I wouldn’t. But they they were taking dual people up and uh they were constantly coming down and I waited for a while and then another came and another came and the last thing I should be doing is sending a drone up while while the paragliders are there. Um well I chose not to anyway. So all I can do is apologize for that. I’m hoping that you saw it. Zipa since 1858. I did say I don’t drink, didn’t I? Uh I do every now and again. And today I think that um that it definitely warrants a cold beer and a little bit of red wine. Perhaps later I am going to um um cook some dinner. I’m hoping it’s not going to rain. But uh I hope you enjoyed today. All the gear is inside here. here. I haven’t pumped my uh air bed up yet, but I’ll do that when I’m in in there, just in case it rains again. But I want to sit here and hope it doesn’t rain on me. If it does, I should drink my drink inside. Let’s hope it doesn’t rain uh tomorrow cuz that’ll be fun on the uh on the twisties. I’d like a nice hot day like we had today. That’d be that’d be lovely. But Slovenia tomorrow definitely we’re doing it because it’s not that far from here. I haven’t had a look exactly how far. It might be 100 miles, but uh no, I don’t think so. But um we shall pop into Slovenia and spend a night camping there before we enter Austria. Uh sorry, Austria, Italy. Can’t wait. I can’t wait. Um, I’m really pleased we’re in Austria. I’m I’m enjoying it and I’m just sad that uh I can’t spend more time here. But um the whole idea of this was for me to do a big circuit on the bike and test the bike and myself whilst uh looking at some stunning scenery on the way. One thing I’ll mention before I go um the German guy I was chatting to this morning said um said surely if you keep going so far you know 500 300 to 500 km every day you don’t get to see anything you must stop you must look around and I said I agree but I’ve kind of done all that in the past driving I spent a lot of time in Europe including Austria um and whilst you’re on a bike is different from a car, right? It’s all about the ride. It’s about the twisties. It’s about going up in the mountains. It’s about going around that beautiful lake. It’s it’s it’s not really about walking around an old church, is it? Maybe I’m getting it wrong, but it’s like when I stopped for uh for lunch at uh at that cafe as I’d crossed into it uh into uh Austria, I had to leave the bike and where I sat, I couldn’t see the bike and that made me a little bit nervous. But like I say, I had all the important things with me. But you’ve got to trust sometimes, don’t you? Thanks for watching. Please do keep watching. And uh hit that thumbs up. Be really appreciated. And please um probably 80% of the people that watching this are not subscribed. It doesn’t cost a penny. So please do click that subscribe button. All you’ve got to do is have a registered uh um uh YouTube account, which is very easy to set up and you it doesn’t cost a penny. And uh press that subscribe. All the good times just begun. [Music]
Today I head south in Germany to Fussen, then over the Border in to Austria and the awe-inspiring Alps.

I agree regarding the riding. I go to the mountains to enjoy the scenery and twisty roads, not really bothered about being a 'tourist'. Man made stuff is way less impressive than what nature has created.
Just go on with the trip, and the view is amazing. My wife and I were there years ago and Austria is perfect for motorcycling. Don't go looking at churches it is not worth the time spend. Cheers Mike 👍😊🇩🇰
I found your channel a few months ago Mike. Really enjoyable – great rides. Your interesting commentary and chat and relaxed style are exactly right.. Nice choice of music too. Don’t you ever miss the comfort of a larger bike for these long trips though ?
It is a funny one, being afraid stuff will be nicked! I was always conscious of leaving stuff on bike on Euro trip this year. But i think many European countries safer than, for me Ireland, and you GB! France seems to have bad reputation in cities for bike “lifting” but I’ve not had any trouble ( so far!)
Your intro always reminds me of the detectorists.
Great videography from the rider view, makes it quite real like riding in person, hope the rest of the trip goes well and the weather holds.
Yes sir! We ride for the ride, we watch your channel for the ride. I'll tune into Rick Steves if I want to see an old church. Thank you so much for taking us along on this trip. I've got great mountains to ride here in USA, but something about the Alps makes me a bit jealous of you.
Great video Mike thoroughly enjoyed it and agree with you on a bike it's all about the ride, I feel part of the landscape on a bike, a feeling you don't get in a car. BTW what gear do you wear and is it comfortable for long journeys, maybe do a separate video on it.
excellent, beautiful scenery, and as for what touring is, it is what we want it to be, best bit about bikes is the options to see many places a day or just ride wherever we want to, stopping when we feel like it or pushing on, and yes you do see more from the saddle than in a car, also get the smells and sounds better, and you must now have the most travelled Herald bike there is by now, has to be a record lol
Lovely vid again Mike….thought you was in your garden at the beginning 😅
