Aerial Views of London Heathrow and London Gatwick Airports, England – 16 May, 2025: https://youtu.be/Aac8_n12bSk .

Heathrow Airport is the largest and busiest airport in the United Kingdom, located west of Central London in the borough of Hillingdon. It is a major international aviation hub and serves as the primary base for British Airways, as well as a key hub for Virgin Atlantic. Heathrow operates four passenger terminals—Terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5—after Terminal 1 was closed in 2015.

The airport has two main runways, with plans for expansion, including a proposed third runway, having been the subject of extensive debate due to environmental and logistical concerns. Heathrow handles over 80 million passengers annually, connecting London to more than 180 destinations across the globe. It plays a crucial role in the UK economy, supporting jobs and international trade.

Heathrow is known for its high levels of security, customer service, and extensive facilities including shops, lounges, and transport links. It is accessible via road, rail, and the London Underground. The Heathrow Express provides a fast connection to London Paddington. The airport operates under strict noise and air quality regulations and is monitored by the UK Civil Aviation Authority. It continues to adapt and modernize in response to global aviation trends and passenger demand.

Gatwick Airport is the second-busiest airport in the United Kingdom, located near Crawley in West Sussex, approximately 30 miles south of Central London. It operates as a single-runway airport, although it has a standby runway used in emergencies or maintenance situations. Gatwick serves both domestic and international flights, offering connections to Europe, North America, the Middle East, and other global destinations.

The airport has two main terminals: North and South, connected by an automated people mover. It handles tens of millions of passengers annually and supports a mix of full-service, charter, and low-cost airlines. Gatwick is a major base for airlines such as easyJet and also serves carriers like British Airways, TUI, and Vueling.

Gatwick is well connected by public transport, including the Gatwick Express train to London Victoria, Southern and Thameslink rail services, and coach links to various UK destinations. It plays a vital role in the UK’s transport infrastructure and regional economy, supporting jobs and tourism.

The airport has undergone significant upgrades in recent years to improve passenger facilities, enhance security, and increase operational efficiency. Gatwick continues to explore growth opportunities, including the potential use of its standby runway to expand capacity within existing environmental regulations.
