Why was this the Red Gate?
Behind me is Roach Tour, which was built possibly as early as 1187, but definitely before 1223. Roach to means red gate because the original color of the gate was red. As you can see, it is now since faded. On the other side of this gate, they have rebuilt uh what they thought the gate used to look like and have repainted it. This was one of the main city gates on the city wall for Augsburg for people to enter the city. They had to cross over this bridge and then if the gate was open, they would probably pass a checkpoint before coming in.
Discover the story of Augsburg’s Rotes Tor, one of the city’s main medieval gates. Built before 1223 and once painted a vivid red, it was a key entry point into the city. On the other side, see the reconstructed version showing how it might have looked centuries ago.
