Caen Vaugueux Flat Tour: A Basic & Affordable Stay? | Honest Review & Local Guide

Welcome to welltraveled line for Jonathan and Jennifer and we are in the city of C in the region of Normandy. So this is up where you are in the heart of World War II history. You are on where to stay around the world and today we are in the city of Khan but we are going to be at an Airbnb in the section of Khan called the Vogu. This is the old section of Con and where you want to be. You will have the castle and the cathedral in your front yard. And back behind you is this charming cobbled pedestrian area full of darling shops and really good restaurants and cafes. This is one of the only places that was not destroyed during the war. And so it’s beautifully preserved and it really is a special place to stay. Take a tour with us and we will show you the apartment where we were. And remember, you are here for the location. If you’d like more information about the area, watch our Eat, Stay, and Play channel where we have videos about the World War II beaches, the American cemetery, the castle, and other parts of Normandy. [Music] We arrived by train and took a taxi to the Vogu. The apartment is at the very front of the neighborhood, right across the street from the castle. You will check yourself in using a key code. You do need to be mindful there are no lifts in this building and you are up on the third floor and the stairs are windy a little bit steep and not so easy if you’ve got a lot of luggage. There is a motion activated light that will come on for you and you’ll need to go up two flights of these stairs. But the good news is once you’ve reached V4 you’re at your apartment. But there are a couple more steps once you get inside. You will have a lock box at the front door that has one code and a lock box at the door to the residence that has a different code. And the door to the residence is actually a key. So you’ll open up the box, get a key, and then you have a key to your apartment. So, you’ll come up these last few steps and you will enter into the main area of the apartment. It has these incredible old beams and so you have a sense of originality here. There is a small kitchenet with a sink here, a mini fridge, microwave, pots and pans, and a twoburner stove right there. There is a small Nespresso maker, and they’ve left pods and tea, salt, and pepper for your use. Plates and glasses are above the kitchen sink. In that cupboard’s the toaster. And at the top of the stairs is a closet. And in that closet, there is a toaster, a tea kettle, and an iron. There is a futon style couch here in the living room with windows that overlook the castle walls. You are literally right across the street from the Chateau Dukall. There is a great coffee table, a small breakfast bar, a really small TV. You’re pretty far away from it, so it was kind of hard to see. And a hutch in the back. The bedroom itself is a queen-siz bed, not very large, but there are two side tables, one on each side. a light overhead, a small wardrobe storage space, a full length mirror, and a window over to the front of the building where you can see the abbey in the distance. The bathroom is accessed through the door right next to the bedroom. Lights are on the left hand side. As you enter, there is a very small sink, a vanity with hand soap, a commode, and your hot water heater is right there, which works with your handheld shower. You will want to take advantage of the very detailed and thoughtful booklet that they have left at the coffee table with information about local amenities, things to do, places to go, and all of these things include distances. The bottom line is you are within walking distance of just about everything you’re going to want to see in the city of Con. If you’re looking to go further a field to the D-Day beaches or any of the D-Day museums, those might be worthy of a bus or train ride or it would be great to have a car to access them. But if you’re just going to be staying in con, everything is within a 15-minute walk. You will be given instruction for trash removal and recycling, which is just down at the end of the street in bins. We found the apartment to be fairly basic. The futon was really hard. The pillows and linens weren’t especially comfortable. The bed itself wasn’t very comfortable. The kitchen is sparse and small. But this is a small historic flat that’s been renovated in the most special location you could get in the city. So, you’re here for the location, the apartment itself, uh, pretty basic. But if you would love a good view and you want to see the castle lit up at night, literally from your window, then this might just suit your needs. [Music]
