Der Exerzierplatz, im Kieler Volksmund einfach „Exer“ genannt, ist einer der zentralen Plätze der Stadt und ein Ort mit bewegter Geschichte. Ursprünglich als Militärfläche genutzt – wie der Name schon andeutet – diente der Exerzierplatz einst dem preußischen Militär als Aufmarsch- und Übungsgelände. Mit dem Ende der militärischen Nutzung wandelte sich der Platz schrittweise zu einem offenen urbanen Raum. Heute ist der Exerzierplatz ein multifunktionaler Platz, auf dem regelmäßig Wochenmärkte stattfinden. Besonders dienstags und donnerstags verwandelt sich der Platz in ein farbenfrohes Meer aus Marktständen mit frischem Obst, Gemüse, Blumen, Fisch und regionalen Spezialitäten. Neben dem Marktgeschehen ist der Exer auch Ort für Veranstaltungen, Flohmärkte und politische Kundgebungen. Umgeben von markanten Gebäuden wie dem ehemaligen Hauptpostamt, dem Gewerkschaftshaus und der Schauburg, fügt sich der Platz in ein urbanes Stadtbild ein, das Vergangenheit und Gegenwart verbindet. Der Platz ist zudem ein wichtiger Verkehrsknotenpunkt: Buslinien kreuzen hier, und die zentrale Lage in der Nähe zur Holtenauer Straße, zur Innenstadt und zum Schrevenpark macht ihn fußläufig attraktiv. Im Winter wird der Exerzierplatz oft für den Weihnachtsmarkt genutzt oder als Standort für einen kleinen Rummel. Trotz seiner funktionalen Gestaltung mit viel Asphalt und wenigen Bäumen hat der Exer durch seine Offenheit und Vielseitigkeit eine ganz eigene städtische Qualität. Er ist Treffpunkt, Markt, Veranstaltungsfläche und Durchgangsraum zugleich – ein urbanes Herzstück Kiels mit historischem Tiefgang.
The Exerzierplatz, commonly referred to as “Exer” by locals, is one of Kiel’s central urban spaces with a rich and layered history. Originally established as a military drill ground—hence the name—it once served the Prussian army for parades and exercises. After its military use ended, the area gradually transformed into a multifunctional city square. Today, Exerzierplatz is best known for its vibrant weekly markets, especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when colorful stalls offer fresh produce, flowers, fish, baked goods, and regional delicacies. Beyond market days, the square hosts flea markets, cultural events, and political demonstrations, acting as a stage for civic life. It is flanked by historic buildings such as the old main post office, the Gewerkschaftshaus (union hall), and the Schauburg, contributing to an architectural mix that bridges Kiel’s past and present. Functionally, the square is also a major public transport hub, with several bus lines crossing it, and its proximity to the popular Holtenauer Straße shopping street, downtown Kiel, and Schrevenpark adds to its strategic importance. In winter, the Exer is often home to parts of the Christmas market or small carnivals. While mostly paved and minimal in greenery, the square’s open character and flexibility give it a unique urban charm. It serves as a meeting point, marketplace, event venue, and thoroughfare—a true city centerpiece with historical depth and everyday relevance.
