Ride to the Top: Exploring Heidelberg via Funicular

The Heidelberg Funicular Railway (Heidelberger Bergbahn) is one of Germany’s oldest mountain railways, offering visitors a scenic ride from the city’s Old Town up to the iconic Heidelberg Castle and beyond to the Königstuhl summit.

The original lower section of the line was opened in 1890, providing a vital connection between the town and the castle. It was later expanded to reach the Königstuhl in 1907, offering panoramic views over the Neckar Valley. Over the years, the funicular has been modernized while preserving its historic charm — especially the upper section, which still uses nostalgic wooden carriages from the early 20th century.

Today, the funicular serves not only as a practical transport link but also as a beloved tourist attraction, combining history, nature, and engineering in a truly memorable experience.
