Dacaniro – Château de Mercuès
What makes Mercuès especially remarkable is the imposing Château de Mercuès, towering above the village. This 13th-century medieval castle has a rich and fascinating history. It was once the residence of the bishops of Cahors, which is evident in its grand architecture and strategic location; offering both status and protection in turbulent times. Over the centuries, the castle underwent several renovations and restorations, always preserving its medieval grandeur.
Today, Château de Mercuès is a beautifully restored monument that blends historic elegance with modern comfort. Within its walls, you’ll find a luxury hotel where atmospheric rooms effortlessly combine authentic details with contemporary amenities. There is also a renowned restaurant where you can enjoy refined local dishes, often paired with wines from the estate. Surrounding the castle are meticulously maintained gardens and inviting terraces offering panoramic views of the river and surrounding landscape; a dream setting for romantic dinners, events, or simply daydreaming away.
And then there are the vineyards surrounding the castle. The estate produces excellent wines from the famous Cahors region, known for its powerful Malbec grape. Visitors can join guided tours and wine tastings, where you not only learn about the history and craft of winemaking but also get to savor the rich, full flavors of these wines firsthand.
