Nestled between the soaring massifs of Belledonne and Grandes Rousses, Lac de Grand Maison perches at an elevation of about 1,698 meters (5,571 ft), forming a shimmering mirror in the heart of the French Alps.
This artificial lake is the product of human ingenuity: it was created by the Grand’Maison Dam, constructed between 1978 and 1985, and officially operational by the end of 1987

As part of France’s largest pumped-storage hydroelectric system, Lac de Grand Maison serves as the upper reservoir, storing a staggering 140 million cubic meters of water, which is channeled down to the lower reservoir at Lac du Verney to generate electricity in mere minutes.
But beyond its industrial function, the lake is a serene alpine jewel—framed by rocky slopes and tranquil reflections, a scenic symphony of mountain and water.
Camping Recommendation
Camping directly on the shores of Lac de Grand Maison is not permitted, and remote alpine regulations prohibit bivouacking in the immediate area for environmental protection

Camping du Col – Just ~13 km away, set at around 1,650 m altitude, this serene site in La Toussuire offers a unique mountain atmosphere with panoramic views over the Aiguilles d’Arves
