Getting Food & Water in Remote Borneo, Battling the Engine and Trying to Repair the Broken Autopilot

Episode 435 :

Hello Friends,
On this episode I stock up on Food, Water and Fuel in the town of Kumai in Borneo and battled the engine to get it started. I then head down river to wait for a weather window to sail to Belitung.

While I am waiting I get into trying to make two broken Autopilots one working autopilot.

  1. Great job James. Longtime viewer and wanted to share gratitude for time you put into these. Little details like sharing lat long for fellow wannabe circumnavigators really appreciated! Fair winds.

  2. probably isn't helpful with your ongoing engine saga but In some cases, repeated use of starting fluid can lead to the engine becoming reliant on it for starting, potentially worsening existing issues

  3. if you get another auto pilot like those – you should open it up new and put conformal coating on the control boards. to help make them a little more water resistant.

  4. My little GM1 had low compression due to rusty valve seat, would have a hard time starting too. It progressively got worse because these little engines don't have glow plugs (at least mine didn't) it was difficult to impossible to start. Adding heat to the intake via heat gun or torch would help it kick… I ended up getting the valves lapped, maybe this helps?

  5. There are water-repellent nano sprays, I think if you use them, they will provide complete protection for critical or sensitive electronics.

  6. James I was thinking a pin and notch system and you can adjust every so offten you can make like a plate 0f 180 that has small but subtle fractions of degrees with a pin whole where the rudder handle with nipple can drop in 1/4 degree increments

  7. With all that cranking I suggest you keep a check, during the process, on the ‘exhaust water reservoir’ along the exhaust hose towards the exhaust outlet. When you crank water is pumped into the reservoir but when the motor doesn’t fire the water is not pushed out. With each crank more water builds up. Result: the sea water backs up and flows into the engine exhaust outlet valves and into the cylinders. Then you have a dead engine. It can be repaired but not easily. Good luck.

  8. I wonder if your fuel pump is failing? This may explain why ether helps you get the engine started. I was watching another channel who is rebuilding a yanmar and the key way for the timing gear was pooched. Engine started and ran but not well. 🤷‍♂️
