LYON: Top Things to See — History, Rooftops and Fine Art
In this second part of our trip to Lyon, we spend a full day exploring the heart of the city, from hidden gems to iconic landmarks!
We start at l’Antiquaille, a fascinating cultural space built on a XVI century residence and later a convent, tracing the history of Christianity in Lyon. We discover the moving stories of Saint Pothin, Sainte Blandine, and the martyrs of 177.
Next, we ascend to Fourvière Basilica, a Neo-Byzantine masterpiece. From the crypts to the breathtaking rooftop views, we explore every corner of this stunning building while learning about its rich Christian heritage.
Our journey continues at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, one of France’s most comprehensive art museums, housing works by Rubens, Monet, Delacroix, Rodin, and more.
Finally, we pass by the historic Église Saint-Nizier before leaving Lyon with unforgettable memories.

Hello, hello, Serge here (as usual !). This second part of your exploration of Lyon is fantastic ! It's very well filmed, very well documented, a real pleasure for history buffs ! The great basilica of Fourvière is a very strange monument, a sort of very overloaded architectural bric-a-brac, and at the same time quite impressive. Many people think that it is a very massive, very solid monument, but in fact it is mostly built with concrete and metal structures, which makes it much more fragile than one would think, and it is deteriorating quite quickly. There have already been several restoration campaigns, especially on the roofs (I published several long reports on the work phase in 2010). When you went to see the Saint Nizier church, did you know that it was there, in the church and the surrounding streets, that incredible bloody ceremonies carried out by fanatical priests took place in the 18th century ? These people slashed worshippers in a state of trance with knives, beat them and even nailed them to crosses ! What a thrill !! 🙂
