Cycling France, Bordeaux to Sète via Canal de Garonne & Canal du Midi – Day 1

Day 1: Bordeaux to Saint-Martin-de-Lerm

Our biking adventure begins as we leave Bordeaux, following a smooth, designated bike path out of the city. Once we reach Latresne, the route takes us away from the river and onto a former railway line, now a peaceful cycling trail. Along the way, we pass old train stations that have been repurposed as friendly stops for cyclists, offering coffee, snacks, and helpful local information.

As we ride further, we start to see the first stretches of vineyards lining the route—a sign that we’re entering wine country. The neatly arranged rows of grapevines hint at the incredible wines produced in this region, making the scenery even more picturesque.

We decide to take a short detour to explore the bastide town of Créon, a medieval settlement built in the 13th and 14th centuries. A little further along, we stop to admire the remains of La Sauve Abbey and the historic Church of Sauveterre-de-Guyenne.

As we approach the final stretch toward Saint-Martin-de-Lerm, the terrain becomes a bit more rolling, adding a little challenge to the ride. After a great first day on the road, we arrive at our destination, ready to rest up for the journey ahead.
