AMAZED To Learn ALL Korean History in One Hour!! | American Expat Explorer
Okay, we’re back. Today we’re going
to the Korean National War Memorial, but first we had to stop and get some victuals.
They sure were full before we embark on our very calorie draining day. So, first we got What
did you get? Uh, I got um the this is kind of miso soup with beef and this is in Korean sop
just just rice kind of rice. Yeah. And I got some beef and rice and there’s like some egg
there and some vegetable croquettes. I choose I I forgot the name. Donkatsu (Pork Cutlet).
Yeah. Yeah. Uh, chicken donkatsu. Okay, cool. What is your favorite part about Korean? How am I supposed to redo that? Favorite part
about Korean culture. Go. So, I think for me, it’s really hard to just pick one aspect of Korean
culture that interests me, but for most people, I would say it’s the food. Since I’ve
been here, this is everything that I’ve tried is probably some of my favorites.
I I’ve loved everything that I’ve had. Another thing that I find really interesting
is their history. A lot of things Oh my god, I’m so good. Favorite part about Korean
culture? Just one word. Go. One word. [ __ ] [ __ ] [ __ ] Korean culture. Favorite thing
in Korean culture. One word. Oh, one word. Uh, delicious food. Delicious food. Korean culture.
One word. Korean culture. One word. Shopping. Shopping. K-pop. K-pop. Korean culture. Favorite
thing? Uh, food. Food. One word. Bali. Oh my god. Bali. Good. Korean culture. Favorite thing. One
word. Go. Quick culture. Thank you. Wow. Hi. And now we’re about to cross the street. We’re
going to go to the war memorial. And I heard this place was renovated. You can see it’s like right
behind here. You can’t really see me that well, but yeah. Um I think we’re going to
spend all day here. Isn’t it Hey, isn’t it free to get inside? I’m not sure. Maybe it’s free. Yeah, it’s free. It’s free to get
inside. So, if you’re coming to Korea, definitely something that you can add to the list of things
to do besides going to like all the hangout spots like Wana Hung. Come learn some Korean culture,
some Korean history. thing that I noticed the most when arriving here is that there’s a lot of open
space. There’s a lot of open space because I guess this is um this like a national monument place or
national museum. So, they need to have the grounds very open, but there aren’t so many people. Like,
it’s weird like other parts of of soul there will be tons of people, but here there’s like very very
few. I think it’s because of what this place is. Like maybe museums don’t draw so much attention,
but this place is actually really cool. And by the way, today I think it’s June 28th. It’s really
it’s really in the beginning stages of of summer. You can tell because it’s so humid out here. It’s
very humid. It’s hot. There’s a light breeze, but man, this this humidity like really sneaks
up on you. Like seriously. So, when you come to Korea from June until August, even like the
second week of September, be prepared because you’re going to sweat. This humidity is going to
get to you. Look at this. It’s a nice area. Oh, you can even sit down there if you’re on a date or
if you have friends. I didn’t know that. Huh. Oh, yeah. So cool. Okay. Okay. I guess the reason
why there aren’t so many people in this area is because like this is the entrance, but as we’re
going like further up inside, there are so many people walking down looks like everyone’s like
on the inside because it’s so hot outside. So maybe they’re just inside watching the events or
the exhibition. So we’re going to go inside, too. We need to get out of this heat. Oh, here it is.
Here is the main part of the war memorial or the National War Memorial. Woo! Man, it’s hot. That’s
a nice nice design though. You see Namsan Tower in the background. Super sick photo opportunity. Very
sick. And yeah, now tons of people are here. So, we can go inside into exhibition hall one or two.
And remember, this place is super free. Very, very free. So, you can come here. You can
spend all day, have fun, enjoy yourself. Okay. So, looks like we’re going to split up
and we’re going to go around and wa watch the exhibitions by group because I guess um yeah,
staying together it’s kind of limiting. We have to like go at that group’s pace. Oh,
she’s telling us to go. So, yeah, we’re going to break off into groups. We’re going to go
inside. Man, this place is looking really nice. Even if you don’t want to stay here all day to see
all the exhibitions, you got to come here and take a photo because this is like the perfect photo
place. Especially if the weather was clearer, you can see Namsan Tower like right here in the
background. You got to come here. Got to come. My wonderful group. Yay. Yo, walking inside. Oh my
goodness. The air conditioner like hits you. Oh, it feels so good to be in here. And the inside
looks amazing. I wish I would have brought like a camera with a very wide angle lens because
the architecture in here is super cool. It’s like really amazing. And there’s this like nice
dome on the top. Wow. And then you can see like all the workers here on the side. Ah, and when
you come here, you got to put your uh anyways, you got to go through the security check. So,
let’s go. Okay, we’re in here and the first thing that I noticed was how the roof is set. This
is freaking crazy. Really nice roof. And oh, now we’re going to go inside of the exhibition
and let’s take a look. Okay, the first part of the museum, the exhibition that we’re watching is
like prehistory and Asian history. So, like how did people live in the Paleolithic period? They
have a lot of different artifacts here as well. You can see over there there’s like some tools
that humans used. It’s pretty pretty nice. Wow. I’m going to get Big bite. Whoa, look at that. Look at all of this. My goodness. And I was told by one of my students that all
of these ornaments are 100% gold. That’s crazy. Look at this here. Wow. Oh, this is bronze
decorated shoes. Maybe some of them are gold. Wow, this is impressive. So, all of this
is from one of the three kingdoms of ancient Korea. Before Korea was divided
into, well, I don’t want to say Korea, the land mass that we call Korea now was divided
into three kingdoms. There was Sheila, Baekjae, and Gongoryo, I believe. And the place we’re
in now is Sheila. So all of the ornaments, all of the artifacts here are from Sheila uh
dynasty or Sheila Empire kingdom whatever you have. And then later Gongoryeo conquered uh the
other two kingdoms and they became the Gongoryeo Kingdom. And then after Gongoryeo there was Joseon
the kingdom that preceded Korea as a nation. I’m happy you guys like to be on camera now. Wow. Take a look at this. Okay. So, I was a bit wrong earlier about
my history assessment of Korea. Actually, the way that it happened was there were
three kingdoms. There was Sheila, Baekjae, and Goryeo. And then Sheila unified all three
of those kingdoms. And then for some reason the unified Sheila separated back into the three
kingdoms. And then Gongoryeo unified all of those three kingdoms again and made one kingdom. And
the capital of Goryeo was Kaesan. But then there was a general who usurped the throne of Goryeo
and then that became Joseon. So the general who usurped the throne started the Joseon dynasty and
then they moved the capital from Kaesan to Seoul. Uh I think if let me know in the comments if I
messed up any of that because it was very very complicated. I I knew some information about the
history of Korea but I didn’t really connect all of it together. But now I I I kind of think I got
the gist of it. Okay. So I think all of this is a real history. So, there’s a lot of nice artifacts
here of the Unified Kingdom. My goodness. Then we have this nice bell over here. And then let’s come
over here. We can see some other artifacts. And the window. So nice. This looks like a tower. Oh,
it says miniature pagodas. Whoa. One thing that I I noticed about all of these ancient kingdoms
and all the ancient peoples uh in general is that they are very uh meticulous with how they build
uh their ornaments and their different kinds of instruments like knives and tools and things.
It’s amazing how people who don’t have access to the same technology that we do able to create
they’re able to create like these very intricate ornaments and artifacts. Okay, now we’re going to
the Joseon area. So, I guess my brief summarizing of the kingdom’s period was correct. So, we
actually went from like Sheila, then we did No, we did Beck and then we did No, I think it was
Goryeo and then Baejae, then Silla, then unified Silla and then Goryeo and now we’re here in Johan
section. So it actually follows a pattern. I like this. I like this a lot. Joseon, the country
where the sun rises early in the east. I love it. This is what I wanted to see.
The kings of the Joseon dynasty. There’s our boy. There’s our boy. John
the Great. Ah, this is All right. So guys, yesterday we went to my my castle, but uh
we couldn’t really see my seat, my chair, because they moved my chair here to the
museum so everyone in the world can get a chance to look at it, you know, and I allowed
them to do that. They asked me personally, they said Francois. No, they didn’t say Francois.
They said King Francois. I was like, “Yes, what would you like?” And they were not looking
me in the eyes. Remember that they have to look at the floor when they’re talking to me. They
asked me if they can move my chair here. I said, “Yeah, no problem. I’m not even going to charge
you a penny.” This place is massive. It’s very well organized. Come here, easily spend about I
guess 2 hours, maybe even more because there’s a cafe on the outside, so you can like chill.
And then there are many different levels for you to go and explore. It’s really cool. Yo,
there’s a cannon over there. There’s a cannon. I’m I’m leaving. I’m going to go home
because I’m a little tired. And we finished um the tour here at the war memorial, right?
Or not war memorial. Excuse me. I keep saying war memorial. This is not a war memorial. This
is national um museum. Yeah. No, I keep saying why do I keep saying war memorial? There’s no war
here. War memorial. Yeah, I keep saying there’s a war memorial. It’s not a war memorial. Anyways, uh
yeah, we just finished our tour. I’m going to go home. How would you like it here? Oh, how was it?
Actually, I like Japan. You like in Korean museum, but I’m interested in Japanese culture. So, yeah.
Okay. So, he’s a Japanese loving Korean. Show. It’s a secret. But, um yeah, this place is huge.
By the way, there are three levels. I’ll show you. There are three levels, so you can come here, stay
here like two, three hours if you want. There’s a cafe just over here. And yeah, it’s a really
great experience. Really good to know about uh Korean ancient history, uh culture, and
um yeah, just have a good time relaxing and chilling with people you like. Anyways, thanks
a lot for joining us. See you in the next one. France’s tire. It’s been a long time. Make
sure you stay hydrated. Peace. Yesterday.

An impressive structure, I love modern museums that contain millennia of history. Beautiful. Sam was lucky to find a great group, I'm sure she'll be back.
