#282 Wilhelmshaven: A Journey to the North Sea of Germany | Germany Travel
The trip to Wilhelmshaven brought me many special experiences. Starting from South Beach (Südstrand), we strolled leisurely along the coast, enjoying the fresh air and the beauty of the North Sea. Südstrand is one of the few beaches on Germany’s northern coast that faces south, which means it gets sunshine all day long — perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and relaxation. A Unique South-Facing Beach: Grass and Sand Combined Unlike beaches with only soft sand, Südstrand stands out with a mix of lawns and sandy areas, serving as a kind of sea dike that helps protect the coastline. Along the beach runs a promenade lined with cafés, restaurants, and playgrounds — making it an ideal spot for families. At sunrise, the sea was truly beautiful. I also watched seagulls flying after the fishing boats, filling the whole area with lively motion. During low tide (almost like witnessing the magic of the retreating waters), vast sandy stretches are revealed. Visitors can sunbathe, relax in wicker beach chairs (Strandkorb), or simply take a walk across the sand. In the late afternoon, as the tide went out, my daughter and I played together on the wide sandy flats, leaving behind little footprints on the soft sand. But Wilhelmshaven is more than just the sea — it is also closely tied to its harbors. Here, we visited the naval base, which preserves the history of the German Navy, and then continued on to the industrial port, where modern life and bustling trade come together. Some of the city’s highlights include: The Wattenmeer Visitor Center – part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wilhelmshaven Aquarium and the Coastal Museum (Küstenmuseum) The German Maritime Museum (Deutsches Marinemuseum) Thus, Wilhelmshaven reveals itself as both peaceful, with its blue sea and sandy shores, and lively, with the vibrant pulse of its ports – leaving my family and me with unforgettable memories.
