Hello friends! Welcome to Corte, Corsica. Corte is one of our favourite towns on Corsica. Nestled in the mountains, it was once the island’s capital and remains an important part of Corsican heritage. The viewpoint we started at was Belvédère de Corte, with the Citadelle de Corte perched high on its rocky outcrop. What makes this fortress truly unique is how it seems to grow from the mountain itself, cleverly incorporating the natural rock formations into the defensive walls. Today, it houses the Museum of Corsica, offering insights into the island’s culture, history, and traditions. Let’s keep making our way downhill. A Casa Curtinese (yellow building) is one of Corsica’s oldest grocery stores. Operating since around 1800, stepping inside feels like travelling back in time. This traditional Corsican shop has served the community for generations, with shelves stacked with cheeses, cured meats, chestnut flour, and jams. It’s a wonderful place to sample Corsica’s rustic flavours and pick up a small souvenir. Place Gaffory is a charming square named after Jean-Pierre Gaffory, a Corsican patriot and military leader. The Church of the Annunciation dominates the square with its simple yet striking façade. Cobblestone streets and pastel-coloured buildings give the area a timeless Corsican charm. At its centre stands his statue, honouring his role in the island’s struggle for independence. Corte’s main street lies ahead! Place Paoli is the heart of modern Corte, celebrating Pascal Paoli, the “Father of the Corsican Nation.” His bronze statue stands proudly at the centre. The square is open and inviting, with cobblestones and surrounding buildings that reflect Corsican architecture. Cafés and small shops line the edges, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors. Cours Paoli is the main street of Corte, lively with shops, cafés, and patisseries where locals gather throughout the day. You probably can’t smell it through your screen, but the scent of fresh pastries and brewed coffee drifts through the air! Not all of Corte’s residents are ready for YouTube fame. We’ve teleported back to the southern part of the old town, near where we started. Earlier we didn’t get the chance to show you this spectacular view! Let’s make our way down to the Tavignano River. The best time to visit Corte is in spring or autumn, when the weather is warm but not too hot. Summer is lively with festivals and events, though it also brings more crowds. Winter is much quieter, offering a more local feel. We’re here in November, and the weather has been wonderful over the past few weeks. Getting to Corte is half the adventure. The drive from Bastia takes just over an hour, and from Ajaccio around an hour and a half, with mountain scenery that is truly spectacular. There’s also a train line linking Corte with Ajaccio, Bastia and Calvi, offering some of the most scenic rail journeys in Europe. The Tavignano River flows from high in the mountains through spectacular gorges, staying crystal clear and wonderfully cool year-round. We randomly found this peaceful spot while exploring the area at the base of the old town. Thanks for joining us on this walking tour of Corte! Corte is just one stop on our road trip through Sardinia and Corsica. We’ve got some epic hikes coming up next, so subscribe if you’d like to follow along. Until next time!
